Dunfermline 1 - 0 Hearts: Laszlo unfazed by tough task ahead

Published Date: 17 July 2008
IF CSABA Laszlo wasn't already aware, then the new Hearts manager found out for himself in last night's defeat against an impressive Dunfermline side just how arduous the task of lifting a beleaguered group of players off the canvas will be.
However, after seeing his new charges turn in a disappointing performance at East End Park in his second friendly in charge of the Tynecastle side, the amiable Hungarian remained unfazed by the challenge ahead, insisting that, despite the fact he has
been at the helm for only a matter of days, he knows exactly what must be done to get Hearts back on an even keel.

"This is the second game and at the moment the most important thing is to see in which positions we have a problem and in which positions we need players with experience," he said. "After two games, I have 100 per cent knowledge about the team. I have 100 per cent knowledge of my target, what I must do. At the moment the concentration is not there yet.

"Overall, though, I am happy with the players and the spirit of the team. The quality is there but we don't have the experience. I know everything about who I want to keep and who I want to move on. If you saw the training, you would know exactly which players we want to keep. The game in Belfast (against Glentoran on Monday] was not so good, and the first half here was a little better and then the second half was better again. The team are making small step-by-step improvements in each half we play."

As he had done in the 1-1 draw in Northern Ireland two evenings previously, Laszlo deployed a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Michael Stewart again supporting lone striker Gary Glen, although the manager did state afterwards that he would prefer to play two in attack, the availability of suitable personnel permitting.

Things started well enough for the Edinburgh side, with a corner won just a matter of moments into the match, but captain Christophe Berra headed harmlessly over from Stewart's flag-kick. This early threat, however, proved to be something of a false dawn for the 1,000 or so supporters who had journeyed from the capital keen to embrace the Laszlo era.

While they were able to enjoy the bulk of the possession, with the twin midfield shields of Ruben Palazuelos and Ryan McGowan looking assured in front of the back four, Hearts, without Laryea Kingston and Andrew Driver, were worryingly bereft of creativity.

Indeed, apart from Berra's early header, the visitors had barely got out of their own half by the time Dunfermline opened the scoring with their first noteworthy attack after 24 minutes.

Stephen Glass surged down the left channel and cut the ball back to the edge of the six-yard box where the on-rushing Dunfermline player Kevin Harper and Hearts left-back Lee Wallace, who was attempting to clear the danger, tangled before combining to squirt the ball beyond Steve Banks. The goal was later credited to the unfortunate Wallace.

If Laszlo could have been entitled to expect this setback to act as a wake-up call to his punchless side, he would be sorely disappointed, as Deividas Cesnauskis and Audrius Ksanavicius continued to offer little on the flanks, while Glen proved that, despite all his endeavour and neat touches, he doesn't yet have the stature or the know-how to effectively carry out the solitary striker role.

Worryingly, for the Premier League side, Dunfermline – who lined up in their own variation of the 4-5-1 – had seized the initiative and two of their new recruits almost combined to increase their lead, with lone striker Graham Bayne seeing a header from former Hearts full-back Austin McCann's cross well held by Banks.

In an attempt to get Hearts further up the park, Laszlo used the half-time interval to replace the more defensive McGowan with striker Jamie Mole. This resulted in a marginal improvement, but the closest the Edinburgh outfit came to an equaliser was a deflected effort from Cesnauskis which required an acrobatic save from Dunfermline goalkeeper Paul Gallacher to keep it out.

Substitute David Templeton and Stewart both went close late on for Hearts, but an equaliser would merely have papered over the cracks.

Dunfermline: Gallacher; Woods, Wilson, Phinn, Thomson, McCann, Harper, Glass, Bayne, Burke, Muirhead (Williamson 73). Subs not used: McIntyre, McBride, Willis, Reidford.

Hearts: Banks, Karipidis, Zaliukas, Berra, Wallace Palazuelos, McGowan (Mole 46), Cesnauskis, Stewart, Ksanavicius (Templeton 69), Glen (Husband 63). Subs not used: MacDonald, Mikoliunas, Brown.

1st half was dire with only Berra getting pass marks.
HARPER(ex Hibby) gave Wallace a roasting.Everthing broke down in last third. Ksanavicuis looked totally disinterested.(1st & 2nd half)
2nd half was better with Hearts controlling the game but looking totally punchless up front. Chesney/Stewart picked their game up. Husband & Templeton looked OK.
However only expect a maximum of 5 of 14 players involved to be 1st choice (Banks/Karipidas/Berra/Wallace/Palazelous)

However sure problems obvious to Laszio.

#18 Obviously heavily dependant on new signings but.... add Johnson/Driver & Kingston to five mentioned& hopefully three new signings ;to incl two forwards.
TEAM: BANKS
ANOTHER BERRA KARIPIDAS WALLACE
KINGSTON Palaz Johnson Driver
ANOTHER ANOTHER

Still expect McDonald/Thomson/Neilson/Zaliukas/Rapnik/mcGowan/Miko/Chesny
/Stewart/Screpis/Aguier/Nade/Elliot/Glen to compete for places in team/pool.

Would like 6 or 7 new signings but trying to be realistic. Obviously 3 QUALITY signings(incl two forwards) easier said than done but above pool of circa 25 with the right management IMO for 3rd place.

Hopefully you are right, we need new players and we need them now all this rubbish give him them a chance is why Hearts will not move forwards show them the door or we will be in trouble next season, the players we have are not comfortable on the ball and can not play a passing game just look at the back four they have been brought through the ranks by simply clearing there lines, good luck csaba you will need another miracle to turn this lot round.

I made a commitment to Hearts, that if the got aNEW MANAGER in, I would renew my S.T.
Both "events" have taken place.
I had absolutely no doubt, as I sat and looked at the team line up, that it would be a painfully long night, and, it truly was.
Laszlo will now realise, that Hearts currently are in dire straights, staff wise.
Brutal describes the performances from...
Zaliukas
Audrey
Wallace
McGowan
Stewart.
Poor performances from Karipidis,Chessy and Glen.
Kinda tells you what kind of night it was.
If this is what we are serving come Christmas, my S.T. is going on EBay!!!

Same sh**e players that failed last season, not the managers fault by a long way, but you cant polish a turd, but with no goal-scorer to paper over the cracks we could be in deep doo doo, we need new signings and we need them now, or is going to be a relegation scrap with Hibs and Hamilton
33

OK - Hibs have there problems but why do Hearts continue to play the Lithuanian garbage that set their downfall last season. Romanov will continue to pick the side, this being the case this season. Your manager will be offski within a month.

sounds similar to Belfast - I didnt go last night because we didnt have any new signings or trialists - the new manager has to find out the players strengths and weaknesses but the fans already know it.all the guys travelling to the German tour will have a ball but I hope they get some new faces to see play.

#47 - Think it's right for the new manager to witness all the squad in action before making up his mind onthem, regardless of their nationality. He's obviously getting there and it will be interesting to see who gets punted - that will tell us so much about any interference.

#44 Main difference is that Hibs were using the intertattie as way of trying to get in Europe proper and it's only when Mixu found out who the opposition was and they turned out to be so good that we started to get all this nonsense about the two legs being more about getting up to speed for squad than trying to succeed. We're playing meaningless friendlies - you were playing proper competitive matches. Somebody needs to tell Mixu if you fail to prepare then prepare to fail.

Its a pre-season friendly,who cares.
Iam glad some of the players are showing they are not up for the fight now when something hopefully can be done about it.

"I know everything about who I want to keep and who I want to move on. If you saw the training, you would know exactly which players we want to keep." says Csaba.

Excellent quote, now lets see who is pulling the strings at Tynecastle.

Stotty: no more than the usual disgruntled booing you get when team getting beat. In particular at end of 1st half. To be honest the 1st half in particular was that bad that ,although i did not participate, i could not blame them.
2nd half was an improvement(could not be worse) but still substandard.

However Rome was not built in a day.

Great point - I would rather they showed their true colours now rather than when it matters.

You gotta wonder at the mentality of some footballers who have the job that us lot can only dream of and yet they cannot seem to understand they should be fighting for their futures here.

Unless, of course, the ones who are not doing it in training know they are guaranteed a game........

There has been a lot of discussion about players actually wanting to play for the shirt aswell as do they have the ability.
I think we saw enough of the players last season in certain games to suggest that they can win games.
So it must be the attitude.
We can only hope that Csaba is in a position to do what must be done.
He is definetly making all the right noises and up until now seems to be allowed carte blanche with the press(i am VERY suprised at that).
If he is allowed to make the changes he is talking about i think we could be in for a cracking few years.
If not,the circus will continue.

But really, fans weren't actually booing the players were they??

I know its early days but why are dross like Ksanavicius, zaluikis, chesney and miko getting anywhere near the team?

Laszlo should be shipping these people out as soon as possible. None of them give a damm which is illustrated in their effort and movement. Miko is useless and should have been binned years ago. Ksanavicius had a nightmare last season and yet here he still is picking up a salary and playing in the first team. I honestly don't think anybody else in the spl missed so many chances.

On the positive side a few of the younger guys are getting an opportunity which is encouraging. The boys need to know that the door isn't being closed on them by usless lithuanians.

Hearts need a new goalkeeper, either that or give mcdonald a run, two new full backs, a box-box midfielder and 3 quality strikers. The manager was step 1, now it needs to be followed up.
55

Alasdair,

17/07/2008 09:14:07

56

victorian of gorgie ,

17/07/2008 09:15:18
oh well, not a great showing by the sounds of it, it could however be a blessing in disguise because they will all be off to germany knowing that an awful lot of hard work is required to be done, not least laszlo.

he says he now knows everything he has to know about the team. maybe not quite true because he hasn't seen a few of the players like kingston, aguiar, makela, nade and a few others. some trialists will be joining them in germany (not all liths hopefully) so hopefully we will see some movement in the player search.

all of these players are well enough paid for us to expect them to show some heart and make enough effort. if they don't want to earn the money they get, the door is that way as they say.

The reason they are in the squad is because there is no-one else - our squad is not as big as some would believe.

We can't just change the team overnight. Csaba will probably bring in 3 or 4 guys he knows to freshen things up and then some players will gradually be moved on.

Or, he could coach Cesney to run forward instead of side to side?

i think he got his coaching badges at SAS selection on the brecon beacons.

seriously though, every time he's quoted he says things which show he's got a clear vision of what he wants to see from the players and of the way he wants to develop the squad. good on you big man, i hope you are allowed to implement your regime without too many obstacles being put in your way.

#72- very good point about chesney!

However do you think that Laszlo would be allowed to send chesney, miko, zaluikis or audry back to kanaus?

I'm suprised in some ways that the four of them aren't back there at the moment. Hearts aren't in europe and kanaus have CL qualifiers which will be completed by the transfer deadline. A bit of confidence boosting football in lithuania over the summer could have done them the world of good.

Were all a fickle bunch, Both teams could sign a couple players and have a good result in our next games and we'll all be saying how good things are looking again. Hearts scenario is we have known for a long time we needed new faces, we know what positions need strengthening, I'd say Centre Half, a Left back, a quality Midfielder like another Larry, and 2 strikers.

The squad we have just now is poor we have known that for a while, and it had no confidence, that takes a while to build up again. Also the two games that have been played Csaba has used them to view players, test them out look at strengths/weaknesses and also give the young lads a shot to see if any might breakthrough into the team, 8 lads under 20 last night in that squad. Im not downbeat about the result, and wont worry yet, as i do think signings are imminent.

Hibs have some good players, again I'll be heckled for this, but I just dont think mixu is the man for Hibs, I said that long before we had our manager I said it last season. Mixu has Hibs playing some dire Hoofball, and while that wouldnt be a problem if it gets you results, the fact is the results are not there. 3 games no goals, I asked yesterday if its right that its now 8 games on the trot since Hibs scored? Hibs have went ffrom playing some decent football and getting some good results to playing hoofball and getting no results.

#81 Aye. Cos they're exactly the same things aren't they? Hearts drawing and losing their first 2 friendlies, and Hibs getting horsed out the Intertoto.
Tell you what. Come back when Hearts have lost their first 2 competitive matches of the season. Then we'll talk.

Hey GF, I wish I could disagree with you re Mixu but the truth is I am not sure myself. We dont seem to be picking up the same bargains we have in the past and yes, the style of football is a worry.

As you say however, a few signings by either side and attitudes will change. And I will totally deny saying the above. : ) The fickle world of a football fan eh.

#83 - you make me laugh, the only 'kn0b' around here is you sunshine - did the dingle brothers play well? ----'3rd team' - that's the funniest thing ive heard in a while - where did you finish last season? I seem to recall your last two competitive games of last season -pumped off killie and Gretna - 3rd force (give yourself a shake wee man). you bring in some unknown manager who kicked your 'god' john Robertson. your club has no ethics and is quite frankly the laughing stock of Scottish football. up ya.

Could it be because managers in the past you have had, have been well known and have a lot of contacts in the game, Mowbray and Collins have played at the highest levels, know a great deal of people in the footballing circles and have a lot of contacts. Though that shouldnt make too much of a difference if theres a good scouting system in place, but would help.

I think we will have a couple or so faces being added by the time we head to germany or while were there, even maybe a few trialists. If we get this Jackson Mayanja coming in as Csaba's assistant i expect a couple or so Ugandan players, the rumour was he would be joining Csaba as his assistant and that a few of the Ugandan Internationals including their top striker wanted to follow them to Hearts.

Nobody’s mentioned yet that our best player by some considerable distance was Jamie Mole when he came on. Nope, I couldn’t believe it either.

Pass marks for Berra, Glen (though he had virtually no help or service) and Karapidis, as he was playing out of position. Chesney improved as the game went on, Rueben did the opposite. The rest were awful and as for Stewart; people were actually laughing at him, that’s how bad he was. Pathetic. On last night’s showing I actually wonder if we’ll ever score again.

Well, the way I see it we just got really lucky getting Mowbray. He completely turned the club around. JC? Mmm, he may have been a big name but he didnt half bring some rubbish into our club! If he had great contacts he certainly didnt use them.

Anyhow, in the International name Mixu is a big name. third top caps for Finland and spent time in Englands top league.

I'm not really sure what the problem is. As I say, he could be working away and we will sign a few cracking players. At the moment I am concerned however.

Riley,

From my lab's group leader: Please could you refrain from posting such laughable nonsense in future as _____ just about ruined his keyboard by spitting tea all over it after reading your comment. He is bright red and choking as we speak... Laughing wildly!

The sentence in question (This is Jamboy) my messed up little friend is as follows...

"I estimate that in excess of twenty million pounds has been creamed from Hearts into Lithuanian accounts."

Priceless man!... I estimate that you are a total laughing stock! three quarters of my lab have just saved the link to your bebo sites in their favourites lists!... You are becoming more 'famish' all the time.

Many of my coleagues did not believe me about how f*cked up you are but after reading your 'contributions' here today, a quick look at the social network sites (over some chocky biccies and tea) and a quick run down of the whole history of CORGY, SPL HQ and the multiple personality thing?... Well lets just say you are now also the laughing stock of the accademic world in Edinburgh!!!

"I estimate..."... YOU FUNNY!

I estimate that you are a trained chimp with a PC!!

TommyTommy, why do you have to be so repetative and boring?
Tell you what, since your so concerned about Hearts financial problems and are convinced Vlad is laundering money and involved in tax evasion and all sorts of illegal business dealings heres some links and numbers for you to call, but i bet a years salary you don't. Because you know what you say is utter nonsense, and by trying to report it and by saying what your saying "On the Record" you know youll end up being prosecuted.

Big team , Wee team , Scottish Cup , Hobos , Vermin , blah , blah ,blah .

WHY DONT YOU CLOWNS GROW A PAIR OF bO££OCKS AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE STATE YOUR FOOTBAL CLUB IS IN ?

You are the laughing stock of world ( never mind Scottish ) football and still you refuse to see what is before your very eyes .

Never mind eh ? When you are all out shopping at Tesco on a Saturday afternoon with no team to support anymore, you can always cheer yourselves up with the thought that Hibs have not won the Cup since 1902 .

You are now the most deluded, despised and ridiculed fans in British football and quite frankly deserve everything that is headed your way .

Tick Tock .

I wonder how many of you that are deriding the team were actually at the game last night ? 2nd game in pre season and the snipers are having a field day.

Fair enough, as a whole we were poor. But Dunfermline scored one and failed to test Banks for the rest of the game. Their keeper made two outstanding saves, we had one shot on target which was going in and blocked by a defender and denied a stonewall penalty because it involved a Lithuanian (same old, and no doubt true for the season ahead).

Mole was excellent when he came on. Chesney was the best player on the park, the only player who could take a player on. Stewart was absolutely rank, the worst player on the park by a mile.

Well you see the thing is mate despite a few things that we would like to see changed, we seem to be moving in the right direction again and well to be honest your penny pinching, not won a game in 6months of Mixu Hoofball team are in rapid decline... According to fans phoning Talk 107 there are a lot of fans now worried about the state of your club.

You see the thing is things could be worse... We could be giving trials to no-hopers who are getting the p155 ripped out of them by Hibs supporting pundits.

RECLAIM YOUR CLUB FROM ROD THE THIEF!!

Really seriously need to get rid of Stewart, possibly the most over rated player in the world. Is totally incapable of playing the easy safe ball and spends far too much time attempting the killer ball which his is totally unable to do. Hopefully the new manager will see through him and pretty damn quick.

It is only the second friendly of pre-season and we are still experimenting with players and formations.

New players will come in and we will have Larry available... Lets hope Csaba is as good as his word and stops picking the players who are not good enough, he has to see them play before decisions can be made.

I estimate that Rod Petrie has swindled Hibs out of 8 mil and three packets of Hob Nobs (allegedly)
