LIKE a child who smashes a window then runs away, Roman Romanov was nowhere to be seen around Gorgie on Saturday.
He had done the damage the day before with an embarrassment of a performance at Hearts' annual general meeting: others would have to deal with the consequences.

In terms of the harm done by the chairman to his club's already bruised reputation
, it will be left to the likes of Campbell Ogilvie, Hearts' managing director, to attempt some repairs. Some club sources think it will take months or longer to counteract the debilitating after-effects of Romanov's rants, which included allegations of corruption within the SPL.

In terms of the team on the pitch, Stephen Frail, the caretaker manager, was the one who had to handle the repercussions of the chairman's self-indulgence. Romanov had branded five or six unnamed players as high-earning underachievers who would have to go in the summer, which may be a correct assessment but was not best timed to boost the squad's morale. He had not helped Frail's own morale either, by first suggesting the caretaker should be given a chance at doing the job full-time and then saying a man with greater experience was required. In the early stages of this match, it appeared that everyone in the ground barring the away team and their small pocket of supporters was still suffering from a sense of dismay. The crowd looked well down on the official figure, the atmosphere was almost non- existent, and Hearts were playing with little purpose.

To an extent, those symptoms would have been present in any case in the club's first match after their failure to maintain their ever-present status in the post-split upper half of the league. But they were surely exacerbated by Romanov's inept and insulting display.

But Hearts managed to shake themselves out of their lethargy and produce a positive performance which merited the three points. They had to come from behind to do so, though, as St Mirren deservedly went into the lead at the end of an opening spell in which they had enjoyed the bulk of the possession and a virtual monopoly of creative play.

The first chance of the match had seen Steve Banks, Hearts' goalkeeper, get down well to save from Andy Dorman. After 19 minutes, however, Banks was unable to keep out a 20-yard shot from Ryan McCay, who had been allowed far too much space to run into by the Hearts defence. Frail's team had been struggling to mount a proper attack, but they got back on terms more quickly than seemed likely, thanks mainly to a good run out to the right by Gary Glen.

Making his first start for Hearts, the teenager reached the ball from Christos Karipidis and clipped it on to Christian Nade, his fellow striker. From close to the byeline Nade cut the ball back to Eggert Jonsson, and the Icelander's shot found the net with the help of a deflection.

Glen gave his team the lead four minutes before half-time, keeping his composure well when put through on goal by Saulius Mikoliunas. His first shot was saved by Mark Howard, but the ball broke to him off the goalkeeper and he made no mistake the second time.

Juho Makela came on to partner Glen on the hour after Nade was forced off by an injury, and could have put the game beyond St Mirren with one of his first touches when the ball broke to him following a mix-up between Howard and Ian Maxwell. His shot from the right edge of the box looked to be on target, but it was cleared for a corner several yards short of the line.

That was the first incident of any note in the second half, and after it the game drifted on in similar style for another 15 minutes. Then, realising they had a chance of salvaging at least a point, St Mirren began playing with more urgency, and were rewarded with an equalising goal. A free-kick from a central position was chipped into the box and headed clear to the edge of the box only as far as Gary Mason, who volleyed it home with his left foot.

In games that have mattered far more this season Hearts have tended to become despondent at such setbacks, but on this occasion they responded more positively, and were back in front within three minutes. Laryea Kingston had been playing well below his best, at times hogging possession when a pass was on, at others giving the ball away. When it mattered most, however, he showed his class, scoring direct from a free-kick given for a trip on Mikoliunas. It was the first time this season that Hearts have come back to win after going behind. After that sluggish start, they owed their recovery to professionalism and self-discipline – qualities from which their chairman might conceivably have learned something had he bothered to turn up.

I just wish Stuart Bathgate would get over his obsessive need to fill match reports with jibes at Romanov or his son.
Jump on a bus to Gorgie and go into Tynie and confront the two of them, maybe you'll feel better after that.
Hearts fans at the game, would be encouraged by Thomson and Glen, both of whom did well.
Take a look at the highlights toninght and see how many players celebrated the three goals.

any hope of getting a full match report, the performance of nade was one pass,if that is all he did then say so ,was their others on the pitch for both sides.Half the collumn wasted on petty remarks,e.g.six parragraphs.

Dont you think that Romanov deserves a few jibes thrown his way?

I mean after his performance at the clubs AGM on Friday he desrves lynching IMO never mind a few "jibes".

Are you in the ever diminishing camp at Tynie that still feels the Romanovs & Co. can do no wrong or are u just so bitter about your teams poor campaign that you feel the need to back the board with total blinkered loyallty? Its commendable in a way but uterrly laughable in most others.

From the report it looks like Hearts actually tried a bit after going behind but lets be real here, Hearts should be tucking the likes of St. Mirren away with ease at Tynie (I certainly expect Hibs to do likewise at ER) so this result as #1 says isnt really worth much anyway at the end of a season which means even less.

#2,4 Based on his 'performance' on Friday, Romanov Jnr deserves all the flak he gets. He simply is not fit for purpose. The Chairman should be the clubs figurehead, competent, articulate, composed. Roman was never any of these.

4,5&6: you completely miss the point.
There has been several articles re AGM.The fact it was badly managed ,in effect, acknowledged by Hearts by putting interview on website which clarifies the majority of issues(incl update on restructuring the debt ;which Scotsman does not feel is worthy of comment)
This is supposed to be a match report.

#7 I thought this read quite well as a report of the match.
I think any references to Romanov Jnr were relevant.

At the end of the day the team have had a very poor season and whilst the players should take some responsibility for this, I think the plight of the team is down to the Romanov interferance and I feel that the calibre of players brought in are poor and also affected by the boardroom/backroom carryings on which makes them worse on the field.

Correct regarding the statement on the website BUT what reason did Rodney have for making such a fool of himself.
My own take is that he is just a tw@t out of his depth but all these rants and raves from him and pa do nothing to end the constant speculation about the future of the club.
You would think that purely from a business side of things and with future investment required that stability would be a crucial factor, sadly where Junior is concerned this is the complete opposite.
10

It's me!,

21/04/2008 09:33:13
For a match report this is poor. Very, very poor in fact. You might have said that Hearts became a much more fluid and efficient unit when Makela came on for Nade, no longer just holding the ball up giving the opposition time to organise a defence. Keep your cheap shots for an article about the AGM. Or, preferably, get a job at the Scum.

I was one season ticket holder who never turned up on saturday. While having a few beers on saturday night and talking to some mates it seems that very few people turned up on saturday.

I was also told (not by anybody with inside knowledge) that Roman Romanov was asked to stay away from the game after his performance on Friday. It seems that certain people didn't want to take the risk of him incurring supporter rath should the team fall flat. The fact that many supporters and media numpties were watching the directors box for him seems to give value to the rumour.

When hearts needed to score (v falkirk and killie) they looked flat and unable to generate a decent opportunity. 3 goals against a very poor st. mirren side shouldn't cloud the lack of genuine decent forward players.

What a good excellent match report. Great thanks to journalist Stuart Bathgate.

So, what player is to be sold for £9m? Maybe Glen Gary? Money is soon needed for interest payment to bank.

Let's not get too touchy about non-football comments in the article guys. What goes on on the ptich will always be overshadowed by events off-field, particularly now that we have nothing to play for this season, and when the little turd is mouthing off like that.
Lets be honest, the Hearts fans are the only ones who care how the team actually perform, the board don't care, the newspapers are much more interested in the behind the scenes farce, and - as we can see - fans of the other clubs love to see us stumbling from one mess to another. So, while we'd all love to see a full analysis of the teams strengths and weaknesses, how the different players performed, how we coped playing a 4-4-2 formation etc etc that ain't going to happen. Cos no-one cares.

#7 Catholic, I like your posts, but I feel the interview with Fedotovas (sp) posted after the AGM on Friday raised more questions than answers. On a general note, why is he seemingly so at odds with the chairman on a range of issues? But, specifically on the debt... just 12 months ago, the Hearts AGM was asked to approve debt of up to £40m, with the insistence that this was "not a problem".

Now, this debt needs restructuring? This seems, at the very least, an incompetent way to run a business.

Catholic Jambo,

#8 no issue with match report.IMO references to AGM were well enough covered previously without devoting 5 paras to same.
#9 totally agree re Junior. If he cannot take the heat they should have kept him out the kitchen.Subsequent website interview was IMO an admission of same/went some way to clarifying the issues.(accept long way off tangible evidence)
#11 some way short of official attendance(15 200) .IMO between 12-13 000. Not bad considering.
Agree we need to sign two quality forwards but for those that did attend young Glen was a breath of fresh air.

Quite a few season ticket holders dressed as empty seats on Saturday......... ;o)

Cracking strike by Kingston and Glen appears to have done more in an afternoon than Clum for the entire season.

Maybe youth is the way forward for Hearts ? Young, hungry players eager to prove a point perhaps ? No bad thing in my opinion. Better that than overpaid prima donnas who are forced to wear the famous jersey for 90 minutes on a cold afternoon when they'd rather be doing something else.
18

Perhaps the Romanovs are not as far off the mark as we suspect. At Hampden yesterday Dailly was justifiably yellow-carded but continued to commit mayhem for the rest of the match, apparently the referee never considered another yellow card. When Cousin went for a wee lie down in the box he was rewarded with a penalty.
19

Catholic Jambo,

Edin 21/04/2008 10:20:47
#15 Accept interview did not produce any answers. But IMO it gave a clearer(would not have been difficult) vision of the way forward.More importantly the responses were given in a manner that assumed they were fair questions as opposed to RR indignant response .RE DEBT:12 months ago it was transparent that we would need a facility approaching £40m in the short term(unavoidable) .It is now recognised that such a debt is not sustainable therefore they propose to convert debt into shares(my understanding much the same as Murray done at Rangers).this can only be a good thing for Hearts long term future. Sounds to me like they are damned if they do & damned if they do not.

Again actions talk louder than words. I simply feel that it is worth embracing the promises/supporting the team in the interim as we wait for tangible evidence. As opposed to IMO allowing those with 'hidden agendas' to influence our judgement. We are only talking about a few weeks. IF(!) new & suitable manager/players/debt restructured over the next few months that WILL BE tangible evidence that we have a future with current owners.

What i want to know is why we didnt stick Makela and Glen in there sooner when it mattered rather than having Nade and Elliot who can both go. I think Frail has a problem with Makela but at least he's a bit more mobile than the other 2 huddies

The coverage of Hearts AGM from the BBC and the Herald as well as the post AGM interviews from shareholders is completely at odds with the vision of the AGM as presented by the hysterical Hootsman. No one is saying that Hearts fans and shareholders are happy but Bathgate and his mates are clearly going well over the top with their criticism.

One positive is that's the first time in 2 and a bit years that we've lost the first goal and come back to win.

Was away for the weekend so didn't have a chance to comment on Mini-Me's performance. Short and sweet - incompetent plonker and embarrassment to the Club and, hopefully, to his father. Time for him to go.

##22 Jambo-ree. In my opinion HEARTS supporters should recognise the positives(however few) as opposed to being influenced by the Scotsmans anti Romanov campaign(NO DOUBT that is what it is) and embracement of same by the majority of our neighbours posting(whose agenda is transparent;in some cases openly stated).
We have to accept that our fall from grace & subsequent ribbing is deserved as we gloated in our big team/wee team cr#p.Now we have to measure ourselves at the level we are at(ie hoping to challenge for 3rd place next season).
The reaction to the AGM is OTT.Nothing changes.we have been promised a new manager with atonomy/removal of underperforming high earners/replaced with more motivated players/restructured debt. (not interested in new stand a bonus if it happens).Just because young Romanov f#cked up the presentation of same does not turn positives into negatives.
EXAMPLE OF OVER REACTION is the abuse given out to Frail. Sine he was given interim charge record as follows(all games);Won 7 Drawn 5 lost 5
Compare with Hibs(note: purely to make a point;humbly accept that you as u say 'own the capital!!) won 8 drawn 3 lost 6. In comparitive terms/based on points HEARTS 26 HIBS 27. Yet Frail condemned/Mixu acclaimed.(that is the point RR tried to make albeit badly)
Respect everyones right to do as they see fit. I will treat post split games as pre season. So far so good. A victory/3 great goals/two new promising boys introduced.

#25. Frail is right to defend his record and as you point out, on the face of it things don't look so bad. If we had avoided defeat in the same way all season then we would definately be in the mix for 3rd place.

Having said that, I am not happy with Frail's decision making, selections, tactics and general defensive outlook. The football has been dire, it's like going back to Levein's time in charge - during which I stopped going for a while to be honest due to the poor football.

If Frail happens to be manager next season I can see us doing OK against everyone except Celtic and Rangers, which is pretty much where we were under Levein. I suppose it all depends on what your ambitions and expectations are.

19 CJ. You say wait another few weeks, and bizzarely 'embracing the promises'. Isn't that what we have done since they took over. Last summer was promises of world class players - where are they. In January of a new manager, where is he. I know 3 other 20 year season ticket holders like myself that are not renewing until we get some concrete evidence of optimism, which won't be by beating any team in the meaningless bottom 6, especially not those 2nd bottom of the also rans, by 1 late goal at home.

People keep having a go at the Hearts forwards and rightly so as they seem to be a very mediocre bunch................but yet again on Saturday - How many chances were there ?How many chances did Hearts miss ? Very few - as usual - Because we produce very few. Hearts do not have a creative midfield (understatement of the year)and therefore create very little. Don't know whether it is the tactics or what, but the forwards cannot and should not carry ALL the blame. It could be that with our style of play Hearts need a forward that will have the ball stick to him until the midfield is brought into attack - maybe it is a reluctance for midfielders to take a chance and break forward.
Either way - SF still needs to change something - And it WILL be SF for next season - We all know it.He has played a very astute game as far as getting the manager's job goes. For over 4 months his timing of comments designed to put himself in the frame for the position has been faultless. He has been after this since day one and no one can blame him for having ambition. Only trouble is - As he has known all along what his goal was - he seems to have put the public away just the same as Romanov has - saying certain things while striving for something different.
"I've no ambitions for the job , I just want to coach the players". A rough quote from SF - Most folk did not believe him - now we know.Keep him as a coach but not as manager - a waste of advice indeed , as we know that he takes orders well - a traight that will ensure the managers seat come August.
No manager (not SF) no tickets.
(If Vlad had never promised us a decent manager a number of times we would probably have settled for Frail rather than some tumshies we have had - it's just the lies that p155 fans off- and the team selections still from Vlad- admitted by Junior)

##graeme H: . It is not 'bizzare'to embrace the positives. It is being prepared in my case to gamble another few thousand(four season tickets/corporate )in the hope(AS OPPOSED TO EXPECTATION) that the lessons have been learned. I have absolutely no issue with anyone who is looking for tangible evidence before commiting.
Further accept that beating St mirren is not 'concrete evidence of optimism'. However(assuming you were there) you would have viewed a victory(better than a defeat),three godd goals & the introduction of two promising yougsters. Positives in my opinion.

The 'SHORT TERM' alternative is to embrace & embroider the negatives & starve the only hand that is currently available to feed us.

Blatant non hand ball by Dons at Parkheid on Saturday, oh, and what about the stonewaller dressed as apenalty at hampden yesterday? Refs should be researched "scro check " style to confirm what team "they supported as a boy "...after all they are merely frustrated players who didnae have the skill to succeed first time round.
Nobody ever leaves primary school with the ambition of being a ref. Let's bring in referees from abroad who know nowt of the affliction gripping this country and ruining the beautiful game, because we will never be rid of the Glasgow giants.
