Hearts 3-2 Motherwell: Laszlo demonstrates silk and steel

Published Date: 11 August 2008
MILD-MANNERED and quietly spoken on the outside, Csaba Laszlo has a steely interior. In a matter of weeks since being appointed Hearts manager, he has turned a bunch of demoralised underachievers into a group of players who will adhere to a game plan and fight to the last.
He sets high standards himself, demands his players do the same, and is not frightened to deal firmly with anyone who deviates from his plan. Laryea Kingston, the most talented member of the Hearts squad and at times last season the most indulged, pr
ovided a case in point on Saturday, when Laszlo's first competitive match in charge at Tynecastle ended in a well-deserved victory.

Kingston had shown some decent touches against Motherwell, but with 15 minutes or so left Laszlo decided he had to be taken off. "If Larry Kingston can do a little bit more, he can be an absolute star," the manager said. "But in the last five or six minutes he lost his discipline and that's why he came out."

To be fair to the Ghanaian, he was not the only Hearts player who had begun to drift out of the game by then. Having started the second half 2-1 up, the home side had begun to sit back too much, threatening on the break only sporadically. An equaliser had looked on the cards for some time, and it duly arrived with ten minutes to play, when Juho Makela lost possession in his own half and David Clarkson took advantage by rattling in a low shot from 20 yards.

Then, within a minute of the restart, Hearts were ahead again. Saulius Mikoliunas, who had come on for Kingston, picked up a pass in the inside-right channel, strode on towards the edge of the box, and scored with a fierce shot which Graeme Smith in the Motherwell goal could do nothing about.

It was a goal fit to win any match, and it was one, moreover, which fully vindicated Laszlo's decision to substitute his midfield star. The former Ferencvaros manager has talked a lot about unity, team spirit and hard work since he took over, but this was the clearest indication yet that he means what he says: that every single player must work hard and stick to the game plan throughout the match.

It is far too early yet to say Laszlo, left, will be a roaring success, and the recent history of Hearts suggests all manner of problems not of his making may hamper the manager's attempts to build a successful side. But he has a depth of technical understanding of the game which would put most Scottish coaches to shame, and which will make Hearts far harder to break down tactically.

He knows he could do with two or three new players, with an experienced striker remaining the priority, and that could make the difference to his team's hopes of claiming a Uefa Cup spot. On Saturday's evidence, though, they should at least make the top six.

So too should Motherwell, and with something to spare. Third last season, Mark McGhee's side were almost as good here as they were throughout that campaign, and if they can iron out their problems in defence they should again be up there challenging.

The shakiness in their back four was shown early on, when Audrius Ksanavicius managed to break through to go one-on-one against Smith. The Lithuanian's shot was saved, and he was then ruled to have committed a foul in the act of winning possession, but it was still a warning sign.

Hearts continued to play in enterprising fashion, with their off-the-ball support running being particularly impressive. After 25 minutes, it was thanks to one such run from Michael Stewart that they opened their account.

After a break up the left had pulled the Motherwell defence out of shape, Andrew Driver lobbed the ball into the path of Stewart, who was running unmarked down the middle of the pitch. A couple of touches to gain control, and Stewart shot calmly past Smith.

The fact that Hearts had their own problems in defence was soon made apparent, when a quick throw-in from the left found Stephen Hughes and he made his way all too easily to the byeline. His cutback found Clarkson, who tapped in from a few yards out.

There were times last season when Hearts would have been dispirited by such exposure of their flaws, but they are made of tougher stuff now, and soon reasserted themselves to go ahead again five minutes before the break. Mark Reynolds failed to deal with a high ball, and Ksanavicius, who had earlier been booked for diving in the penalty area, nipped in ahead of Smith to pass the loose ball into the net.

In all this was a richly entertaining start to the season, and one from which both teams can take a modest amount of encouragement.

Man of the match: Michael Stewart (Hearts)

The midfielder opened the scoring and was generally a critical factor in tipping the balance of play in Hearts' favour. He could be instrumental in reviving fortunes.

That's a game Hearts would have lost last season.

The team badly needs an injection of quality, early days but they are more organised and have a bit more fight.

Get the cheque book out Vlad!

Surprise surprise! another decision goes the Old Firm's way!

Vlad get's slated for his comments and should keep quiet, but yet again he's proved right.............

I agree, when Motherwell equalised I thought "here we go again" but I was proved wrong. The team definitely showed more grit, more fitness, more willing to chase down loose balls than they did last season. Larry was pretty poor and Makela looked woeful, although his confidence probably took a shot when he gifted Motherwell possession for them to score.
Mickey played well and so did Mole, but I don't think there is enough quality in the team for us to consider challenging for European football. I'm looking forward to Bruno coming back. Beslija needs to stay fit and show the kind of play we glimpsed when he first arrived.
Deserved to win and we did so happy with the start.

Still short of a few players, but at least we looked more like a football team. It was great to see Csaba so animated, you can tell how much he wants to win.

#1 spot on but in the past we have had players of the quality that should achieve at least 3rd in the league. The most important factor is leadership on and off the pitch. The Uglies are obviously very beatable. If Hearts can add two or three quality players this could be a very interesting and rewarding season.

Thought we looked very strong through the middle on Saturday youn Mole had a good game
A right back a keeper and at least one striker still required though
Much better i am another who would agree that last season we would have lost that game
Promising start

After the debacle that was last season, this performance was a thing to behold.
I am not suggesting that we have eleven stars in the team, but the improvement we witnessed was breathtaking at times. I had to pinch myself!
We are absolutely a team with a MANAGER who knows what he's doing...Happy Day!
With a few additions we could be challenging for a Euro spot again.
Can I also mention that Falkirk and St Mirren looked pretty clever as well, at the weekend.

Correct Alex - long way to go .....but the early signs are good - I loved the way that the team fought like a Hearts team should..

Before he came to Hearts i'd never heard of Csaba....but Vlad obviously had someone of his attitiude towards training and discipline in mind.

I like the way the players were all made to go to the Gorgie Suite after the game - then all had a post match meal at the ground...

Together!!!!!....I'm starting to like this man...

Everything just seemed better on Saturday he was bang on taking of Kingston as he was leaving young Thompson exsposed at the back
Thought he had done the right thing with Makela also how was he to know his first touch was going to be so poor
Like i said before very strong through the middle and like the things he is doing off the field also
Long may it continue

"Having started the second half 2-1 up, the home side had begun to sit back too much"

Sitting back has long been a negative Hearts habit, much to our cost, particularily against the OF. If Laszlo can spot and resolve this problem as it occurs then he gets my vote.

So after all that angst about lack of strikers we find ourselves the highest scoring team in the league. Funny old game at times. Good news that Jamie Mole had a good game - maybe all he needed was proper coaching.

Still early days for Csaba but getting off to a good start was so important for us. So it's on Ipox with more optimism than I'd have thought possible a month or so ago.

JVoH is a cheat who was allowed to get away with it. Shame!

Rubbish report. To say we sat back and attacked on the break sporadically implies we were under severe pressure.

Nonsense: we were in the faces of their midfield and never gave them a chance to settle. We should have been 4-1 up before they equalised and for us to have got anything less than a win from that game would have been a travesty.

If that is as good as Motherwell played last season then it;'s scary. Aimless passes into the channels and shocking defending.

Early days but we would have lost that game last season.

Mornin guys, how we all today? posted this last night on another thread. Ill post it again. Mainly cause of the free lick part which Im still angered about.

Great result yesterday and great fighting spirit TWICE when Motherwell pulled level for us to go on again and score, something the would never have happened last season. Two players for me yesterday that stood out Stewart and Driver, certainly if Stewart can keep that kind of performance up the doubters will be proved wrong about him. Took his goal really well and a great pass from driver to put him in. Wee Audrey did well for his goal as well, quite brave I thought, and Miko what can I say, Miko doesnt seem to do ordinary goals or tap ins does he? Both the Motherwell goals were brought on only by mistakes ourselves I thought.

Now to the free kick where in my mind it was blatent cheating by Motherwell, Quin jumping up and down in front of Banksy like a headless chicken on acid, to me was disgracefull, and If this is the type of tactics McGhee wants to use in his team to try and gain advantages then Definately better off without him, fair play to Clarkson had it not been for his intervention in telling quinn what a muppet he was making of himself and gettin him away then, who knows what might have happened because I dont think Brines was going to do anything about it until Clarkson got involved. I also believe it was being done to try and get a reaction from Banksy who was already on a Yellow card and if he had been sent off we were goosed as I think we had used all our subs at that point. At the very least it was clearly unsporting behaviour. Had it been one of our players the press would have hounded us for that, calling us cheats etc etc especially had it been a Lithuanian.

Overall Very happy and more than confident in Csaba, and of Vlads choosing of him, We said before he's can talk the talk, lets hope he can walk the walk, looking at yesterdays result and the manner in which we achieved it, hes cert

#15 You're right and the mind drifts back to the two goal lead we squandered against the same outfit in the Scottish Cup match last season. Things are getting better but they were so bad it's going to take a while to get them back where we'd all like them to be.

Although we shouldn't be getting carried away, it is worth remembering that Motherwell were 3rd last season and went into Saturday's game with a lot of confidence. Apart from a couple of defensive errors we were much better than them.

It is also worth remembering that we have players out who could add to the quality of the first team i.e. Bruno, Nade and Glen.
20

Gorgie's Finest,

What a very very bitter little man McGhee is anyone else read his comments. Totally lost the plot

""I think the match only looked like it could go either way because of the two slack goals we lost.

"I think we lost them at a stage in the first half when we were dominating the game, we looked the most likely team, we were the most creative team.

"For the away team, we had most of the possession in Hearts' last two thirds.

"But we've cost ourselves the game by losing two poor goals."

McGhee went on to say he feels his team are currently at a higher level than their Tynecastle rivals. "

Interesting he puts our win down to 2 goals where his defence was slack...."Hello Mr McGhee thats football you tube" what about the goals we gifted Motherwell??? So going by McGhees theory really it was only a 1-0 game, us being the victors. Comments like these bitter and twisted comments only further cement my thoughts that we have the best man for the job and make me glad we never got McGhee in as manager

"Are you watching Mark McGhee......"

Well Done JTs. Spot on everyone saying last season we would have lost this game, having the confidence ebb away once Well equalised.

For Well to equalise twice and us to still win showed we have a better fighting spirit. Everyone is probably right that we still lack a bit of quality but so too do the other challengers for 3rd place, so we'll see how things pan out.

Miko scoring and seeing that Killie scored made for quite a good 30 seconds lol!

Not forgetting Obua, and possible Tullberg. Relly hoping there will be some transfer activity this week. I was told Friday morning that Niemi was a strong possibility of coming back, and that Hearts have actually spoken to his agent, terms have all but been agreed. So was hoping there might have been an announcement about it Friday, but kept quiet about it, I said i had a wee sneaky feeling might have some good news today.

25

Indigo Nightlight,

I think calling McGhee bitter and twisted is a bit OTT. He's doing what most managers do, trying to take the positives from the game. He's completely wrong though, as with better decision making (Andy Driver, this means you) we could easily have had 3 or 4 more goals in the second half. His comments on Possession were wrong as well, it was 57% to 43% to Hearts

Encouraging stuff, but still lost two very poor goals which was a disappointment as Motherwell did not create much at all.

Could be a very entertaining season if we carry on in the same manner tough.

Got to be positive about this result, it's a long time since we've shown enough fight and commitment to regain the lead - so many times last season, once the opposition scored that was the game over, and that has to be down to Csaba. Long, long way to go, but an encouraging start.

#24 Niemi? Really? That'd be quite a coup in my view. Still need a proper striker mind...

What i was told is the deal is approx £4k a week, but theres some other clause as well that Niemi and/or his agent wants in the deal, whether theres truth in it or not I don't know. Certainly Niemi ha always said he is a Jambo and loves the club, and always said he wanted to come back and end his career at Hearts. As far as i know though he is about to have another op on his hand.

I'd be 50/50 over Niemi coming back TBH, Probably one of the best players ever to play for us, and i would hate for him to come back as a shadow of his former self, I wouldn't like the great memories of him spoiled, But he could still do a job for us, same age as Banks, and vastly experienced.

#23 Must admit when they pulled back at 1-1, I thought here we go again, but Csaba has definitely put something into these players. Micky Stewart was easily man of match. Great goal, but Miko still makes me nervous as he's still to much of a loose cannon.
30

GrahamL,

Interesting reading after what was an inetersting match.

my tuppence worth for what it's worth (tuppence maybe)

I came away thinking that it would have been a travesty to come away with anything bar the three points.

For the first hour or so we dominated them in midfield and held them at the back, we did however, lack the spark up fron to to take advantage of our possession.

Mole looked like a young player who was out of his depth and needs to be brought on futher before being exposed to that kind of role. Audrey just looked poor, no touch, no control, no idea. Then juho looked so far short of premier league standard it frightened me.

Our midfield was impressive but drifted badly in the second half when they started to sit deeper and deeper, shabba was right to take kingston off, he was cream crackered and offered little by that stage.

defensively we were ok, first goal was very poor and second goal was so avoidable.

Great finish for our third (i was screaming at him to lay it across goal) and the right result in the end.

Priorities for me are definitely up front. We need at least two decent strikers. We should be looking at some of the old firm bench warmers to give us something up front.

I hope that Vlad and shabba sit down and see between them that the potential is again there and that success can be achieved with a medium sized outlay.

Mon the first team.

You thought Mole was out of his depth? I would have said he was our best player after Stewart to be honest. he ran himself into the ground, held the ball up well, put their defence under constant pressure and brought others into the game. as with the Hull game last week he could have had a goal if not for other players being selfish when he was brilliently positioned.

He is a young player with plenty to develop but if he plays like that every week he'd be a starter for me.

Should the GFA not be looking at referees who declare allegiance to a certain club? These refs should NEVER ref the club they support, nor should they be involved in any games that affect the possible winning of any trophy in regard to their prederred club. Put it this way; if Celtic and say, Falkirk are fighting it out on the last day of the season for the championship, no ref with allegiances to either club should be handling either game.

Seems simle enough to me!

"PAWS" FOR THOUGHT,

11/08/2008 11:34:23
A better Monday for Jambos than for a long time.
However, a (very occasional) thought occurs to me.
In Nov.2005 UKIO offered £4.42M for the 70% of Hearts that they didn't own...which would make Hearts worth about £6M in round figures.
Since then, we've had a credit crunch, and mainly "indifferent" on-field and off-field stuff that we know all too well, which can't have exactly "helped" the finances overall, despite player sales and the like.
Then last month, we had the rights issue where another 13% of Hearts was bought for £12M ......which seems to value the club at approx £92M.(if you do the approx. maths).
Now I'm left wondering,--- what happened to make a HoMFC (worth less than £6M in 2005),-- now worth £92M????
Can we/should we believe that the clubs shares are worth £92M?.......Can that EVER be realistic in the open market?? Why does this valuation look so wrong?
What's going on?
I don't want to sh*t on a nice Monday am, but any (real)accountants out there?

As expected, the laptoployalists are saying nothing about the blatant penalty that Celtic were denied....not a dickie bird out of them about that.

I don't think that the penalty that Celtic got was a correct decision either, but it is mischevious to report on the game without mentioning the controversy surrounding the same referee's earlier decision to refuse a penalty award when the Saint Mirren goalie up-ended Venegoor in the box.

Having said that , from the angle the referee had, it most likely would have appeared as a penalty...the defender had made an 3rse of it, Venegoor was through on goal , he made contact with Venegoor's outstretched arm which would have looked as though he'd tried to pull Venegoor back.

Considering he had turned down a stonewaller a few minuted previously, he must have felt a great deal of pressure to make the award based on the viewpoint that he had.

When you come out with comments like "arrogant hypocrisy " & "venom driven jealousy" then it is rather obvious to us wee team thickos why the likes of GF & RSE assume that anyone who supports a Weegie team is a moron.

Yes..I will enjoy the scrap for a 3rd/4th/5th/top six place but i dont think its a case of kidding myself on that we matter.
I enjoy supporting my team & they matter a great deal to me.
Or are you suggesting we all give up on our teams and come over to your side so we can big it up about winning flags ?????

You dont have to respond,i am really not fussed with debating footie with a big teamer...It just dont float my boat.

The daily rearranger gave Artur 6 for his performance, whilst giving McGregor 7.

Artur made might very well prove to be the save of the season. It was a superbly struck shot by Mehmet from about the edge of the box after some very sharp passing and as soon as the ball left his foot anyone would have just about put the mortgage on a goal.
How Artur managed to get a strong hand on that was miraculous.
Artur also made a very good stop , low at the near post, in the first half and was faultless throughout the match in his marshalling of the defence and use of the full-backs.

McGregor saved a poorly struck penalty and was other wise very shaky during the match at one point completely missing the ball as he attempted to clear from a pass back. He then screamed abuse at Dailly , as the pass back was obviously not quite perfect enough, and it was all Dailly's fault that he missed the ball completely ...aye right Alan

#57 a fair asessment of the penlaty - the defender was never going to get there and was in big trouble as soon as he laid a hand on Venegoor - very soft pen but thats how it goes. He should have left it to his keeper.

#59 - a Hearts comment (#2) mentioned the pen for Celtic at the very start of this column!

I would disagree, you are quite clearly a very sad individual harbouring a dangerous obsession towards Hearts (and Hibs). Why else would you be on here commenting on a Hearts story as opposed to spending time on your own teams' stories? Discuss.

#58 - Touché an' fair play to ye, (was just a wee slap back at GF's holier than thou and RSE's stupid comment about morons), my original post was just a wee tongue in cheek about the weekend's events, FFS I even said well done and apologised for being on yer thread...

...because all the bile bags have ensured that the Glasgow team's, (there is no OF, no guilt by association), threads are by default never open these days...

...BTW, I never called anyone 'thickos' or 'morons', so I'll thank you and others not to twist what I actually said...

...#62 - "I would disagree, you are quite clearly a very sad individual harbouring a dangerous obsession towards Hearts (and Hibs)" - See what I mean, why so touchy and venomous? MUPPET...

...#62 - "Why else would you be on here commenting on a Hearts story as opposed to spending time on your own teams' stories? Discuss" - DOH, not the sharpest knife in the drawer are you? For the record, in the last year or so I have commented approx 3 - 4 times (including this one) on a JT/Hibs thread for the aforementioned reasons...

...anyway who f^rted and made you the chief tvrd in charge of the hallways, a footy forum is open and accessible to everybody, don't like it? Join swallow-swallow, censorship and banning lists are there stock in trade.......

Well if it is as blatant as the Eddie Smith one then he should not be allowed to referee either.

What comments did i make that you interpreted as "Hollier than thou?"

Im interested, because i only stated a FACT, the Scotsman publications close the OF threads for a reason, and without going into it as im sure you know what im talking about, there are idiots that tend to spoil it for decent people wishing to post comments. Now i never named you or anyone as beng in that group of people that spoilt it. If you think I was then you must be feeling guilty about something.

Wouldnt mind seeing niemi back. I remember seeing an interview just after he left hearts saying he loved the club and the city and would DEFINATELY finish his career with us. That said i dont see what all the fuss is about getting a new keeper. Banks is technically sound but his greatest asset is his enthusiasm and how he commands the back four. Hes very vocal(needs to be as berra is a mute) and no one wants to win more than he does.

I remember the days of Brian Mginlay, anyone remember him? Biggest anti hearts ref going, Hibby, yet even he was fairer than many of the refs today, and he made some stinkers of decisions.

TBH we will NEVER rid Scotland of dubious refereeing decisions, until overseas refs are brought in or refs from maybe England.

Ive advocated for some time about a proffessional body of referees being set up, in each countries top flight leagues throught Europe, and this body should be responsible for allocating refs to games, No ref from should referee a game from the same country.

Have always said If Serie A one of the biggest leagues in the world can have corruption then its not too much to think there is corruption in other leagues, especially the lowly SPL where we have a duopoly

79, all joking apart, you have a good plan there. UEFA and all it's money could easily afford to do this. Like you said, if it can happen in Serie A, then it can happen anywhere. However, I do feel that in Scotland its nothing to do with money changing hands. Quite simply, its not realistic to expect that a referee - someone who obviously has a huge interest in the game - has had no allegiance to a team as they grew up. And in a country the size of Scotland and in particular the nature of the country, it's demographics etc, then its not realistic to expect ref's who have no allegiance however slight to one team or another. I couldnt referee a Celtic game fairly and Andy Davis, George McBride, Mike McCurry, Willie Young, Hugh Dallas, etc, etc, etc, etc cannont be expected to referee games involving Rangers or their hated rivals with completely without bias.

Outside refs, it has to be!

What just on the Scotsman? Why dont you use 606 or "Keep the Faith"

"in the last year or so I have commented approx 3 - 4 times (including this one) on a JT/Hibs thread for the aforementioned reasons..."

Thats funny because you seem to be on here every day (even if you do change your name). Obviously not the sharpest knife in the drawer yourself.

"a footy forum is open and accessible to everybody, don't like it?"

Celtic, Hibs, Aberdeen, Rangers etc.. all are welcome (well maybe Rangers arent lol). What is not welcome is tubes and wind up merchants like you who contribute nothing apart from bile and gash by calling us small teams and going on about how good your team is when you seem more interested in our team.

Guys - can we not agree, it's, after one round of fixtures, 1-0 to Celtic in terms of dodgy decisions. Let's see how it develops between now and May.

BTW, re Andy Davis, of Abdul Bin Davis as we knew him in the Ayrshire juniors - due to his moustache and a dodgy sun tan - I always thought, like everyone else from that blighted burgh, all he cared about was Kilbirnie Ladeside.

You talk about "poor efforts"! Read your post for a prime example of an extremely poor effort. Poorly written, poorly spelt, poorly punctuated, grammatically poor and a pathetically poor content.

Go away you poor individual.

If Csaba was given a few million pounds to take in a couple more experienced players we would have a good team. he knows what is required and the way the players have responded to him is great. Stewart is playing it seems the way he can play. Dont know how Mcghee can say they should have won,as Hearts had the majority of the play. Having said that I am at the game through the computer. Looking forward to listening to the Rangers game.
