HEARTS manager Csaba Laszlo admits Michael Stewart is among the candidates to succeed the departed Robbie Neilson as club captain.
Right-back Neilson's switch to Leicester City this summer, just six-months after he took over the armband from Christophe Berra – who joined Wolves – has left Laszlo contemplating who should be handed the extra responsibility.

At 28, Scotland inte
rnational Stewart, who is the ambassador for the Hearts Education and Community Trust, is the most experienced player in the first team squad in the wake of the recent departures of Bruno Aguiar and Christos Karipidis to Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia.

The fact the midfielder is also a dyed-in-the-wool Hearts supporter could also sway Laszlo's thoughts when it comes to making a decision but the Hungarian insists he's in no rush to hand out the captaincy.

He said: "Michael is definitely a candidate. At his age, he can lead the team.

"He had a very positive personality development, not only in football, also in his character last season. He has a very positive development behind him and this speaks well for him. After his good performances he has acceptance from the team and he changed his attitude to be very positive in the right direction. All this speaks for him, definitely, but before I make a decision I would like to have everybody on board.

"We have a little bit of time to decide and we must know which players can come to us first. I will try to make a very quick decision about the captain but I think it is more important to have a good team, a competitive team, for next season."

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Jamie MacDonald is hoping to be fit for the start of next season after being hampered with a hand problem during the latter stages of last term.

The former Scotland Under-21 cap, who recently signed a new three-year deal, is hoping a period of rest during the close-season will enable the ligament damage on his left hand to heal naturally.

He said: "I'm still struggling a little bit so it is good to be able to get some sustained rest really and then hopefully I will be fit and ready to go again when pre-season comes around. It's been a bit of a vicious circle this season because the only thing that will cure the problem is rest but obviously I want to be involved in as many games as possible."

Mikey will come out of the traps on fire and will appear to be a genius appointment if given the armband...................but then it'll all go pear-shaped when he goes off his game in November before being sent off in December for something stupid......

Thanks for your positive spin on Mikey Abe.

In my opinion Mikey will come on in leaps and bounds once given the resposibility he deserves.
Give it to him Csaba.

I expect the usual braindead mob will be on shortly once they wake up from their metadrone inspired coma with their usual negative/stupid comments on Stewart.

Is Mikey Stewart really the right man for the job? Most of the critisism that has been leveled at him by hearts fans seems to be about his temperament. Many people have said on here that he is petulant and immature in his interaction with his team mates when things are going badly and his game suffers when morale is low.

Then again who ele is there to be captain? Lee 'Marvin' Wallace? Red card Zali? No-one else is as obvious a choice as Stewart, though everyone else is probably just as sensible a choice lets face it...

Abe Fruman yesterday "I wouldn't want to be compared against someone who was considerably better than me."

Already we have on this story two hibs fans comparing the Mikey Stewart of hibs versus the Mikey Stewart of Hearts.

It's seriously pathological.

I.J,The Diggers. Mikey Stewart of Hibs? He has been emptied from every club he has been at (including Hearts on his first go around) and a couple where he was on trial too. He is too much work for a coach and has horribly under achieved in his career.

Hand it to him

Who cares what he failed at life is about learning from mistakes an solving problems, his whole persona is directed towards success at Hearts and in life.I agree MS can be a handfull an very opinionated but i believe it is the making of any footballer to Captain the side he supports MS does have it in him to do so.

Captaining Hearts is an Honour

It also gets you a quick exit out the door, so im sure the MS haters would agree give him the armband now.....

#5, IJ,

If you comment on an article do you read it first?

Of course you do. Why then did you pass comment on my post without reading it first? I suspect It's because what you want me to have said is far easier to dismiss than what I actually did say.

Hibs fans haven't been anywhere near as critical of Stewart as Jambo's have. We just think It's funny that he is no better a player now than he was first time around at hearts, yet he seems to be.

The really funny part is it's because your team is now gash compared to the team he got emptied out of.

#10, 13.

Read my post again. Your team is gash compared to the team he was emptied from when he came to Hibs. Does that make it clearer, or did Hearts come 2nd and win the SC again this year and I missed it???

Honestly is it only Jambo's that don't or wont read posts properly?

#14 Perhaps you should focus on your own team. Stewart was away before the cup win and had a lot of injuries in his first spell at Hearts, playing very few games and not being impressive at all. He HAS been a much better player in his second spell here - even breaking into contention for the Scotland team.

Making Stewart captain could be a great move if he focuses on helping the young players coming through next season and stops being an idiot at times on the pitch.

I thought Goszlo would be too busy teaching the refinements of grinding, diving and ref-baiting than considering who should captain the sinking ship HMS Jambo.

#16 Not that your comment is deserving of a response but you're confusing the SPL Manager of the Year with European and international coaching experience with a Leither who's "dream" was to coach Hibs. Yogi is an expert in all the things you mention, as well as relegation fighting. Have a good season.

IMO this could be an inspired move. A fit and focussed Mikey Stewart would be first pick for both Hibs and Hearts but the there are serious questions over his commtiment and motivation. Now, it is one thing to let yourself down, but as player and captain, you let everyone down. He could screw the nut and take the responsibity on and become the player that everyone knows he can be. On the other hand, he could make an e**e of it. Either way, it would answer the questions that hang over him.

#20 - I wouldn't agree that there are "serious questions over his commtiment and motivation". It's a tad too much commitment that has been his downfall. He seems to be a sensible, intelligent and moderated chap off the pitch but he seriously needs to curb his enthusiasm at times while on the pitch. Will the Captaincy lead him to moderate his behaviour - possibly but who knows.

Michael Stewart is a average player at best. I was gobsmacked last year when people were touting him as the best midfielder in Scotland.

I was glad when he left Easter Road because he really thinks he is better than he actually and I agree his temperament and motivation are lacking at times.

He acted like a spoiled child when Hibs told him it was over.

Stewart will be a firstclass captain infact I thought he would be captain before Neilson.I would think the extra responsibility that goes with the armband will only make him a better player for us. Only hope he doesnt get sold like our other two.If selected Mike all the very best.

If he's going to be captain he needs to learn when to keep his gob shut, ginge gets carried away at times.
