Laszlo insists he had final say in recruiting Kaunas keeper

Published Date: 16 August 2008
HEARTS manager Csaba Laszlo yesterday poured scorn on any suggestion he was just another puppet of club owner Vladimir Romanov after the Tynecastle club welcomed goalkeeper Marian Kello from Kaunas.
While the last goalkeeper Hearts signed from Kaunas, Eduard Kurskis, was one of the poorest ever to play for the club – he gifted Rangers victory with an embarrassing late gaffe at Ibrox last season – Laszlo insisted the 25-year-old Slovakian was a f
ar more gifted footballer who had impressed him during the two games Kaunas played against Rangers in Europe.

"Before anyone asks a question about Mr Romanov, let me tell you something," Laszlo cautioned journalists who attended the club's media briefing at Riccarton. "Don't ask me about him. This was a decision (taken] between me and Mr Romanov. I saw the Kaunas game against Rangers here and this guy (Kello] is a good player."

While it seemed unlikely any player from Kaunas (the club sponsored by Romanov in Lithuania] would be allowed to move to Scotland as long as they had a chance of qualifying for the Champions League, the 2-0 loss to Aalborg in Denmark on Wednesday created the opportunity for Kello to sign for Hearts.

"I was the person who decided that if the time was (right] when Kaunas did not have any chance in the Champions League or Uefa Cup that I needed this guy here," Laszlo went on.

"We need goalkeepers here. I saw this goalkeeper in the training camp in Germany when he played two games (for Kaunas]. He convinced me. I think that the best possibility is to know that we look for quality.

"The owner also wants quality. We don't do too many transfers.

"I don't know about what happened here in the past but the owner has two teams and it would be crazy not to use the possibility of bringing in talented players."

Laszlo believes in structure at a football club and the days are surely numbered when Steve Banks will fill the dual role of coach and first-team goalkeeper. The earlier attempt to sign Hungarian Janos Balogh on a six month loan faltered when the internationalist wanted to mull over his options.

"We made an offer," reported the manager. "He told me he wants to think about this. You cannot force someone to come here. Next week after the Rangers game we can come back to this question and I hope we can make a good decision."

Stressing he was more interested in quality rather than quantity when it comes to making further moves in the transfer market, Laszlo acknowledged that Hearts lacked experience in a number of positions and that his squad was still two or three players short of what he would wish.

While there may be one more import from Lithuania – "I have one other candidate (from Kaunas] who could be a quality player for us in the future but I don't like to talk about this player's name" – it will be interesting to see what funds, if any, are made available before the transfer deadline to strengthen the side in the full-back positions as well as in front of goal. He admitted both young full-backs Jason Thomas and Lee Wallace would benefit from having older 'guides'.

Having also signed striker Mike Tullberg, who will come into contention for a place next week, and Ugandan international David Obua, Laszlo has been boosted by the quality of player already available to him at Tynecastle. He had particular words of praise for both Scotland centre-back Christophe Berra and midfielder Michael Stewart, indicating that Stewart possessed the instinctive leadership qualities required to augment Berra's captaincy.

The lack of a natural goalscorer, however, in spite of finding the net three times against Motherwell, remains an issue. "Even on the training ground, we create a lot of chances and don't score," he admitted. "The biggest problem is (the lack] of a killer instinct."

While an element of hype followed Hearts' 3-2 win over Motherwell, it shouldn't be forgotten Rangers remain odds-on favourites on home turf to win a fixture they've dominated over the past 20 years. That said, Ruben Palazuelos confirmed the new found enthusiasm among the Tynecastle players for Laszlo's commitment to playing a more fluent brand of passing football.

"With a new manager, it's about getting the ball down," observed the Spaniard. "It's not about long balls. The challenge now is for us to play football. For me, as a Spanish player, that will suit me much better."

While it remains to be seen if Thomas will continue at right-back – the availability of Palazuelos in midfield after missing last week's game through suspension could allow Christos Karipidis to drop back into defence – Christian Nade isn't yet fit enough to play 90 minutes and Jamie Mole may again shoulder responsibility in attack.

It has been a less impressive start than Hamilton Accies have had. Get things into perspective. Shabba is a no one, Hearts are a bottom six team. Know your place, get off you high horse and file quietly into bottom six mediocrity.
Shabba is a fraud and that will be proven in six game and by christmas he will be bannished to the dark place of our minds only occupied by messrs Shaggy, Rix and Malofeev.
Get your head out the sand.

The otherposters are right. You did disappear when your team were humiliated in europe, you were also very quiet when your team embarrassed Scotland in Manchester and were humiliated when the real team from Glasgow pipped you for the title. Ambition or 'delude ambition' has seen your team sell their soul and sadly your club is now heavily in debt because of it. How much is it? In fact, just tell me how much it will be if you build your super duper £51m small stand! You don't need to take into consideration the global credit crisis or the expected champions league victory which I think Vlad predicted for this year!

Thats the mentality of these inbred tramps, would rather Hearts lose than have any real ambition for their own team. it always has been that way with the vermin from leith. On a footballing note. Mendes is not worth the money paid and the spaniard is a massive gamble. The loss of cuellar is a massive boost to everyone outside ibrox and the fact that celtic got loovens(although I think he may be rubbish) is another sign that they are streets ahead of rangers. x

Erm no. I think that bigot has fulfilled his ambition already. He has played for Rangers at their peak. He now realises that rangers will never play at a higher level and has decided he wants to play against the best in England. Sad but true. Rangers are going to be fighting a losing battle for top dog in scottish football this season, cuellar and loovens have seen this already, Boyd, mcCoist and mcGregor will realise this before the end of the transfer window.

The new Hearts keeper looked ok against Rangers, but, he didn't have to make a save worthy of the name.

I feel sorry for Jamie MacDonald though. He has played consistently for QoS over the past two seasons, including last season's run to the Scottish Cup Final.

He hasn't made any crucial errors in that time, indeed, he has consistently made a series of good saves and has on occasins been in effect a match-winner.

He's established in the national Under-21 team and now needs to "train on" and prove he can do it at the highest domestic level and in Europe.

Allan McGregor grabbed it when givent he same chance, a pity MacDonald seems destined to miss out because the new Hearts boss preferes a European journeyman to a promising Scot.

Bit sad really for Scottish football - why don't we trust our kids?

yes there will be a few folk nursing some badass hangovers this fine morning.

#104 scorchio, i dunno, csaba appeared to me to be genuine enough when he was speaking about how the keeper was his choice. he hasn't struck me as another stevie frail type who's happy to rent out the use of his mouth to someone else.

my team for today:

banks
thomson karapidis berra wallace
kingston stewart palazuelos mikoliunas
nade mole

could be driver at LM but i think miko can do some damage by running at the rioters OAPs and cutting inside on to his better side. he's shown what ball striking technique he had in the past. he's also comfortable on his left side.

this game needs two strikers to start with for us to get a foothold in the game. playing 4-5-1 needs your striker to hold it up really well and i wouldn't trust nade for that and wouldn't want to put that pressure on mole. audrey can make an impact off the bench and driver can deputise for either wide midfielder if required.

mon the hearts.

#108 irk, could well end up so. csaba was talking up nade earlier in the week so i've got a sneaky suspicion that he's in contention.

he was on about being positive so i don't want to see a 4-5-1. surely far better to be positive from the start and look to change things if necessary if we are fortunate enough to get in front.

we will have far more options after this week with obua and tullberg coming in. hopefully more to come.

I would stick with it until we get Nade and Tullberg fit, and Glen back.
I think an unfit Nade is a passenger and he must learn that he cannot be considered until he is fit otherwise he'll NEVER lose weight.

#110 irk, i was under the impression that he was a bit fitter, from what csaba said. if not then you're right, he shouldn't be in contention. i trust csaba to leave him out until he's fit so we'll see.

maybe glen might make it into the squad for today so he's another useful option.

i hope the players are well drilled to the special requirements involved in playing in glasgow, in that they are forced to abide by a different set of rules to the other team. csaba should make it known in no uncertain terms that silly bookings, diving, raising hands, mouthing at the ref will get us into deep sh*t and that he will come down hard on any player who costs us the game by being stupid.

csaba is a clever guy and i imagine he wants his players to be clever on the pitch.

This is boring now. Any shambos fan who watched Kaunas knows they are mince.
How can that keeper suddenly become good?
I've got no complaints, he did Rangers a turn before.

Mornin guys, we all set? Ive found a site thats got todays games advertised with the links to watch them, the Rangers v Hearts match is on that site but as yet the links arent available, theres plenty time yet I will be checking every so often, But as i said yesterday I wont be posting them on here. I will post them on TOTT forums. For anyone interested if you havent joined already heres the link

http://talkothetoon.freeforums.org/index.php

About the game today. I think he will still play the 4-5-1 or more commonyl used 4-4-1-1, I dont think Csaba will leave our defence to exposed, but all credit to him if he does go 4-4-2, Im with you Vic i said it throughout the week I think Nade will get a shout today, whether its from the start or from the bench we'll have to wait and see, I also think Tullberg will be in the squad maybe the bench. I don't think Kello will play, He will be on the bench as well.

#112 And if Kaunus are mince then what exactly did that make Rangers (apart from embarrassed and £10m worse off)?

As with any team playing the OF away we travel as much in hope as in expectation but we've got more hope now than I would have thought possible a month or so ago.

C'mon the JTs - make it a double for Vlad!!

Can the Celtic and rangers fans not have their own stories to write sh!t on.

Are they not trusted?
Are there enough fans capable of typing?

Get off our stories and go and play with the traffic!

Looks like there's a lot of "stay at home" fans again today. It p155es me off big time that we have all these clowns slavering about how much they love the team, yet won't go to away games...particularly at Ibrox and Parkhead.....and spare us the filthy weegie stuff...either you support the club through thick and thin, or you're a fair weather fan who turns up or not when it suits. That in itself is fine, but just chuck the nauseating cr4p about "we love our team more than anyone else loves their team"...if that's true, get out there and support them.
I think Rankgers will get horsed today !!

It's nice to see all the Gorgie boys spitting the dummy out because there are Rangers fans submitting comments on this thread. These threads are for everyone to post comments and are not exclusively for fans of the teams mentioned in the story.
I understand the frustration some of you guys feel when you get the grade "A" erses from both sides of the OF coming on and trying to wind folk up but try and remember that not all fans of the OF are typical of these plebs.
I am all for banter and wind ups when it comes to talking about FOOTBALL but when it comes to the other stuff forget it.

Have all the Jambos been rehearsing "Mr Loverman" for todays game ? ;o)

#3 BLEEDING HEART
I can't see why you should try and chase away fans from other clubs. If we have a disagreement, surely its better to win by force of argument rather than mealy-mouthed and childish insults flying both ways?
If Rankgers fans etc. appear, we need to rise above the tendency to attack their club...that's THEIR problem..and surely we should concentrate on debating and assessing what's best for Hearts here.
The cat-calling is very very boring and banter is fast disappearing. Rise above the gutter guys, leave that for others if they wish.

what you fail to appreciate is that most of these twits cannot be argued or reasoned into submission.

What you have is a collection of petty minds, bored enough to get their collective kicks out of spouting drivel.

how can you argue with 'we are the people'???

That point is well taken....and I'm well aware of that as it applies today, but I was also referring to the sometimes pitifully small away crowds we've taken to non-OF grounds as well. I mean, the attendances at Gretna (I know that it wasn't the fixture of the year),Paisley, Kilmarnock etc at the back end of last season were pretty pitiful, and I know that the team was gash at the time, but its case of support your team through thick and thin, and if you can't/won't then stop bragging about doing so as so many posters do....that's just embarrassing.

Vic. HMFC should have bought up all europes surplus riot gear(after rioters went out its prob sitting in a warehouse) and hired it out to our travling support. Lets all say a prayer for the saftey of our guys and also hope that they have all been to the doctors prior and recieved their relevent shots and boosters.

125. Your not too far off the mark. I was at most of the away games last year and as previous seasons, only really filled the ends of murderwell and killy. The less glamerous ties like gretna, st mirren and falkirk were always alot less full and i imagine that does have an effect on the team and is prob one of the factors why we struggle for results at these grounds

The reason why im working today is because the only home game i missed last year was th 4-2(yes probably the worst result to miss!)cos of work and im pretty supersticious when it comes to footy so didn't make a fuss when told i had to work today!

Hmmmmm, I tend to think the reason we struggled at these grounds was becuase the team was poorly recruited, poorly coached, poorly trained and poorly motivated.

Spot on m8, it had nothing to do with the amount of fans at the matches. Although i was at the Gretna game. and many other away games but not all, As i normally use the saturday were away to catch up on paper work etc. I would nver questions a fans loyalty for not going to away matches. Lots of people have different reasons for not going to away games, either spending time with the wife and kids, or those guys that maybe see their kids at weekends only etc, plus money issues. The fact many supporters hold season tickets but dont travel away is enough for me to call them loyal fans. Even those with commitments such as work maybe shift patterns etc, if they cant make every game but attend the ones they can does that make these guys any less loyal? Not in my book it doesn't

#124 DOWN......

I can't buy into that. There is no way that it can be claimed that Hearts don't have their fair share of nutters on these posts.......and the best way to defuse the "outsiders" intent on annoying Jambos is to simply ignore them...it IS a free country, and we're FREE to ignore them........but the sad attempts at attacking others through homophobia, accustions of sectarianism etc are hopelessly counter-productive as practised by a number of site "regulars"and demeans everybody posting here. This needs to get back to be a football thread with some banter and merely attacking everybody who either disagrees with you serves no purpose and doesn't add to the debate in any way. The simple tuth is that the thread gets torn apart, not by the "intruders"...'cos its a free and open site to them as well..but by the by now predictable futile and hostile reactions. It's therefore self defeating, and all we do is destroy any enjoyment and purpose amongst ourselves. Just watch and see just how many of your fellow jambos descend into puerile name calling every single day here. It's becoming a real problem, and results only in bad language, cloning, moderator deletings, accusations flying backwards and forwards etc...none of which show us up in a very good light.
Maybe a bit of laughter and tolerance would go a long way here.

As i revealed the other day the deal for the Hungarian keeper is not dead, and in fact an offer was made.

"Laszlo also revealed that the move to sign Kello would not conclude his interest in the Hungarian keeper Janos Balogh."

"The Hungarian goalkeeper is very talented, but it is a decision between me, the goalkeeper and the club," he said.

"At the moment he told me he would fly back. We made an offer.

"He told me he wants to think about this. You cannot force someone to come here.

"Next week we can come back to this question."

Afternoon LF

Hearts: MacDonald; Thomson, Zaliukas, Berra, Wallace; Kingston, Stewart, Karipidis, Driver; Ksanavicius; Mole. Subs not used: Kello, Palazuelos, Mikoliunas, Nade, Makela, Cesnauskis, Jonsson.

Bit of a surprise MacDonald getting the shout. Thats Banksy full time coach now.

"Hearts manager Csaba Laszlo today revealed that goalkeeper Steve Banks is set to move into a goalkeeper coaching role with the youth team."

"The English stopper is not involved for the Tynecastle side at Ibrox where Hearts take on Rangers at 3pm."

Looks like Csaba's philosophy is if you win you stay in the team unless you get horsed out to retire of course.

I will take a draw today.
