CSABA Laszlo, the Hearts manager, has insisted he will be the sole arbiter of who becomes the first-choice goalkeeper at the club as he faces the first significant test of his autonomy of team selection under owner Vladimir Romanov.

Janos Balogh, the Hungarian international signed on a six-month loan deal from Debrecen in his homeland, is in line to make his debut against Airdrie United in the second round of the Co-operative Insurance Cup at Tynecastle tonight if his international clearance comes through.

If Balogh plays, he will become the fourth Hearts goalkeeper used in as many competitive fixtures overseen by Laszlo so far this season. Steve Banks, dropped after the 3-2 win over Motherwell on the opening day of this season and subsequently demoted to youth team goalkeeping coach, is no longer a candidate for the position.

Scotland under-21 international Jamie MacDonald took his place for the 2-0 defeat to Rangers at Ibrox before making way for Marian Kello, the Slovakian signed from Kaunas, on Saturday when St Mirren were beaten 2-1 at Tynecastle. The recruitment of Kello from the Lithuanian champions, who are bankrolled by Romanov, was viewed by many as the first sign Laszlo would be forced to accept the interference in team selection from the controversial businessman which has marked the tenures of his predecessors as first-team coach.

Laszlo says he is comfortable with Romanov's recent appointment of Arturas Ramoska, another former Kaunas employee, as Hearts' new goalkeeping coach but stressed that he has already made up his own mind who will be the regular first-team goalkeeper.

He refused to name him ahead of tonight's match, but hinted strongly it will be Balogh, the man he knew from his own time in Hungarian football and whom he lobbied Romanov to sign.

"I have my opinion on who is number one, but I don't say yet," said Laszlo. "What is clear is that we now have three goalkeepers to choose from.

"Jamie MacDonald is a very talented goalkeeper, but he needs a little bit of time. We know he will always be ready if we need to use him, but he needs more experience.

"Kello is a goalkeeper who is also talented and with more experience, but Janos Balogh has the most experience. He has played in Champions League qualifiers for Debrecen and won many honours with them in Hungary.

"He had a problem last season when he lost his first-team place at Debrecen and could not find another club during the winter break, but now he has a good opportunity to show his talent at a big club like Hearts.

"I'm very happy with Mr Romanov. He called me and said 'do it, make it happen'.

"It is important for me to have that protection, to do what I need to do. At the moment, I'm very satisfied."

Danish striker Mike Tullberg was due to make his debut for Hearts tonight, but Laszlo revealed the on-loan Reggina player is not yet fit enough. Saulius Mikoliunas is again available after suspension.

#3 Forced to play or forced not to play through enforced sale - same difference. Either way, the owner's influencing team selection. Murray does it more than most but Rod Petrie is the ultimate villain in this regard, having sold an entire team against the will of his managers.

Here is the link to the BBC Sport Predictor:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/sportscotland/predictor/

I have set-up a minileague for all posters on here willing to join.

It’s just a bit of fun and it starts with this weekend’s SPL fixtures.

All you need to do is go to the link and create your own membership. Try and make your user id as close to the one you use on here, so we all know who you are.

NB. If you are already registered and have points on the board, please re-register with a slightly different user id for this minileague, so that everyone starts on ZERO points. Anyone joining with points already accrued will be removed.

Once you’re in, select “My Minileagues” and enter . . .

The Scotsman Forum

. . . as the minileague name.

The password is . . .

thescotsman

Once you have joined the minileague, you can start making your predictions. You get 1 point for a correct result and 3 points for a correct score. After each set of fixtures you can check the minileague table to see where you are and who is on top etc.

Enjoy it. It’s just a bit of fun.

I hope this season doesn't become too predictable. All the favourites seem to be winning. Kaunus beat Rangers, Morton beat Hibs and Hearts can't choose between the four best goalkeepers in Scotland.

We need an upset somewhere along the line.

I expect it will come when Hibs go to Ibrox. They have a really good record there.

Scaba has players in mind and possibly in negociation.

Hearts reserve side draws with Rangers 0-0

Hearts: MacDonald, Kelly (Thomson 67), Armstrong, Park, Sives, McGowan, Kostadinov, Stewart (Copil 67), Makela, Wallace, Templeton. Subs not used: Bjornsson, Balatoni, Mulrooney, Doherty, Mackle.

I notice Copil and Kosta are again promising a break through into first team action. You dont just need to steady a ship, you also have to guide it and sail through all types off weayher.

Clum join to Livingston on loan

Hearts today announced that Calum Elliot is to join Livingston on loan.

The 22-year-old striker will stay with the West Lothian club until January gaining valuable first team experience.
...................................................

The match against tonight will be a great test, the old Airdrie were tough and could play good football.Scaba is also introduced to the second level of Scottish football, giving him a view of the never say die attitude he is installing into the team.

Good luck

Laszlo, I "will call the shots on choice of goalkeeper".

Yeah sure. So Balogh isnt going to develop chronic flu or a mystery injury and be unavailable for months and be replaced by Kello?
16

Bleeding Heart...,

#30 Fair comment.

If Laszlo is "calling the shots", then why did he dispense with the services of the best 'keeper on Hearts' books and thereby potentially destabilise and weaken the team?

It couldn't be, by any chance, that this is what Romanov wanted..?

All football fans should be speaking out against Gordon Brown's plans for a team GB at next Olympic games as this will risk ending Scottish clubs' participation in European competitions.

Balogh will emerge as first choice demonstrating Csaba is in control. No doubt VR has an agenda of promoting the development of Lith players ;as Kello is not a lith why should he champion him?

Only Lith regular this season will be Zali;rightly so.If he can add concentration & consistency(he is only 24) he will mature into a top class centre half(IMO far better player than Webster ever was & has as much potential as BERRA)

I hope that we will see a more proffesional hearts team than in previous seasons, one that will go out there and treat Airdrie with respect but stick to playing the game our way and dictate the tempo.

Our passing game should be enough to dispatch Airdrie and we have better players man for man but with their history against us we will need to be ready to mix it with them too when the tackles start flying in.

This will not be a night for too much meddling in team selection.

Who's gonna be playing up front? And who's in goal? Got to admit I can't wait for kick off!!! Oh' before I forget, well done to Morton'!

Have a really good feeling about the Airdrie game. Might only be a win by 2-1 or so but I think there is a steady build-up happening under a very good manager.

I would still like a lot more confidence at the boardroom level. Is our puppet chairman still alive? What about that nice bit of tottie on the board? What's happened to her? Will Vlad stump up the cash to buy Zibby?

Lot's of unanswered questions but I still have a good feeling.

Always nice to win a trophy IRK, but it is still a diddy cup, it has been totally devalued and worthless IMO, just a waste of games, and more chances for players to get injured in matches that dont really mean a great deal, hence the reason some clubs in the SPL field weakened teams (Not the hobos of course...full strength team last night), devaluing it even more. In England the league cup is devalued as well has been for years, I would like to see both league cups done away with and a British cup introduced which could be played throughout the course of an entire season with the final played end of season, on a vice versa basis of one year at Hampden the next at wembley.

I would never turn down a trophy as I want us to be the kind of club who has more regular success than every 10 years. A British Cup is unlikely as it will raise the ugly issue of a British Olympic team and the individuality of the national teams.
32

Gorgie's Finest,

27/08/2008 10:46:10
#46 IRK

I don't see how a british cup would do that m8. It's two seperate FA's 3 actually if you count the welsh and 4 if Northern Ireland were to be included, getting together to arrange a cup competition for their member clubs. Each club and Football association would still have its own identity, It wouldnt be much different from the UEFA or CL cup competitions where teams from other countries compete against each other.

A British cup would generate massive revenue all the major TV stations would be interested Sky, Setanta etc. all fighting it out for the rights, and with EPL teams being involved I could pretty much say the TV revenue would be more that the SPL's deal with setanta for the league. So our clubs would benefit greatly from more money.

Then theres the excitement value, actually playing English teams competatively in a match that means something. Just think of the mouth watering fixture prospects.
33

Indy Rep Kid...,

27/08/2008 10:51:24

I'm not so sure about the interest and revenue it would create. Whilst the media would fall over themselves to show Celtic/Rangers against the big 4 down south, I can't see many people being that keen to see Motherwell take on Fulham.

Maybe the novelty factor would come into play for a couple of years but after that....not so sure.

Also, unless there is a European place up for grabs, or substantial prize money, then it would be taken as seriously as the League Cup.
34

Gorgie's Finest,

27/08/2008 10:53:57

I think there would be substantial prize money, and if worked properly with UEFA, a European place could possibly be generated out of it. Get what your saying about some fixtures being boring but imagine how funny it would be to see Arsenal having to travel all the way to say Forfar to play.

If Arsenal played anyone outside ther Old Firm they would send a scratch side.

And I cannot see any possibility that UEFA would award a European place to the winner of a competition between different associations.

With IRK, the English dont want us or need us, why would they?
As much as it pains me to say it, eventually, now they have the best league in the world, filled with foreigners of course, fortunately much to the detriment of their national side.
Perhaps teams like Chesterfield or Mansfield would embrace the oppurtunity but not even the Championship sides would see it as lucrative I guess.

"victorian of gorgie" I doubt we will see any of the ussual suspects for a bit. They are as welcome here as Riordan is at Edinburgh's best night clubs.
My main motivation for attending the game tonight was to get a swatch at this Tullberg geezer. Now they tell us he's out, so that's a pity.
I fully expect the Hearts to see off Airdrionians FC tonight. They were extremely lucky to get the win against East Fife.
