CSABA Laszlo, the Hearts manager, has insisted he will be the sole arbiter of who becomes the first-choice goalkeeper at the club as he faces the first significant test of his autonomy of team selection under owner Vladimir Romanov.
Janos Balogh, the Hungarian international signed on a six-month loan deal from Debrecen in his homeland, is in line to make his debut against Airdrie United in the second round of the Co-operative Insurance Cup at Tynecastle tonight if his international clearance comes through.
If Balogh plays, he will become the fourth Hearts goalkeeper used in as many competitive fixtures overseen by Laszlo so far this season. Steve Banks, dropped after the 3-2 win over Motherwell on the opening day of this season and subsequently demoted to youth team goalkeeping coach, is no longer a candidate for the position.
Scotland under-21 international Jamie MacDonald took his place for the 2-0 defeat to Rangers at Ibrox before making way for Marian Kello, the Slovakian signed from Kaunas, on Saturday when St Mirren were beaten 2-1 at Tynecastle. The recruitment of Kello from the Lithuanian champions, who are bankrolled by Romanov, was viewed by many as the first sign Laszlo would be forced to accept the interference in team selection from the controversial businessman which has marked the tenures of his predecessors as first-team coach.
Laszlo says he is comfortable with Romanov's recent appointment of Arturas Ramoska, another former Kaunas employee, as Hearts' new goalkeeping coach but stressed that he has already made up his own mind who will be the regular first-team goalkeeper.
He refused to name him ahead of tonight's match, but hinted strongly it will be Balogh, the man he knew from his own time in Hungarian football and whom he lobbied Romanov to sign.
"I have my opinion on who is number one, but I don't say yet," said Laszlo. "What is clear is that we now have three goalkeepers to choose from.
"Jamie MacDonald is a very talented goalkeeper, but he needs a little bit of time. We know he will always be ready if we need to use him, but he needs more experience.
"Kello is a goalkeeper who is also talented and with more experience, but Janos Balogh has the most experience. He has played in Champions League qualifiers for Debrecen and won many honours with them in Hungary.
"He had a problem last season when he lost his first-team place at Debrecen and could not find another club during the winter break, but now he has a good opportunity to show his talent at a big club like Hearts.
"I'm very happy with Mr Romanov. He called me and said 'do it, make it happen'.
"It is important for me to have that protection, to do what I need to do. At the moment, I'm very satisfied."
Danish striker Mike Tullberg was due to make his debut for Hearts tonight, but Laszlo revealed the on-loan Reggina player is not yet fit enough. Saulius Mikoliunas is again available after suspension.
