NEW Hearts manager Csaba Laszlo will get the first look at his team in action tonight, but he already understands the importance of keeping hold of Christophe Berra and Andrew Driver.
Hearts rejected a £1.5 million offer from Wolves for Berra this summer, and turned down two Burnley bids for Driver. Skipper Berra, 23, made his Scotland debut against the Czech Republic in May while 20-year-old Driver netted five goals in an injury-
disrupted season.
Hearts play Glentoran in a Belfast friendly tonight, when their Romanian-born manager will get the chance to see the pair in action, and he is eager for majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov to resist any further bids for the youngsters, with Celtic manager Gordon Strachan also reportedly keen on defender Berra. "It is most important to keep players like Christophe Berra and Andrew Driver," Laszlo said. "They have quality. But there is time to develop them and I can give them the right direction.
"It can be easy for a lot of players to smile at money and go to a new club but they shouldn't believe life is so easy.
"The players can develop here, play good games and gain confidence and grow more. After some years maybe they can then choose bigger clubs. But my intention is to keep these players."
Meanwhile, former Germany captain Lothar Matthaus voiced concern over the weekend at the appointment of Laszlo,
who was assistant to Matthaus during a two-year spell with Hungarian club Ferencvaros.
Laszlo was appointed as successor to Stephen Frail by Tynecastle majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov on Friday, but the former Bayern Munich and Inter Milan midfielder is shocked by the decision.
"What? Are you joking with me?" said Matthaus. "Congratulations to him, but I can't believe this has happened. He is an assistant manager and would be good in that role, but not as manager. I don't think he has the personality to be a No1, but I also think he doesn't have the experience. There are many things he doesn't have for this kind of job.
"He was manager of Ferencvaros, but I helped him. They had wanted me as their head coach, but it wasn't possible so I gave them Laszlo while I helped him in the background. Time will tell if Hearts have made the wrong choice. I am very surprised."
