Old colleagues flock to Tynecastle for Neilson's big day

ALTHOUGH he won't celebrate his 28th birthday until next month, Hearts' longest serving player, Robbie Neilson, will celebrate 12 years on the books at Tynecastle with a testimonial match on Sunday between the current team and former players who picked up medals in the 1998 and 2006 Scottish Cup winning sides.
Only David Weir, who has a prior engagement in Europe next week, and full-back Gary Naysmith from the side which defeated Rangers 2-1 at Celtic Park ten years ago, have indicated they won't be able to play on Neilson's big day. Weir, though, is keen
to put in a brief appearance beforehand.

With stalwarts from two years past such as Rudi Skacel, now playing for Hertha Berlin, popular ball winner Julien Brellier ( FC Sion), striker Roman Bednar (West Brom) and former captain Steven Pressley (Celtic) also coming back to support the defender, Neilson is looking forward to meeting up with old friends and colleagues.

"Not everyone got a chance to say goodbye to the Hearts' supporters when they moved on, so, hopefully, this match will give a few players the opportunity of a last hurrah," said Neilson.

A reliable and consistent right-back who is one of the fittest players on the staff at Tynecastle, a stomach injury, ironically, is likely to restrict the contribution Neilson is able to make in either of Hearts' remaining SPL fixtures against Kilmarnock and Gretna. However, he will play in his own match.

One of Hearts' most stalwart servants, Neilson has been a force for good off the football field as well as on it. On Monday he travels to Downing Street to meet the Prime Minister after being inducted to the hall of fame organised by Show Racism The Red Card for his work in supporting the charity.

Advance tickets are still available for Neilson's testimonial match which kicks off at Tynecastle on Sunday at 2pm. Briefs have been priced at £8 for adults and £4 for concessions. There will also be cash turnstiles on the day at £10 and £5.

Meanwhile, Hearts have declared an interest in luring Dundee United's Mark Kerr to Tynecastle in time for next season, but face competition from five other clubs.

The midfielder is available on a free transfer after informing United he will not extend his current contract when it expires at the end of the season.

Preliminary discussions have taken place between Kerr's agent and Hearts officials, however Aberdeen, Preston North End and Nottingham Forest are among those also interested.

"I've spoken with Hearts about Mark and I'm still speaking with them. No deal has been done as yet," said Kerr's agent, Scott Hume. "Mark has six teams in total interested in him from England, Scotland and the continent. Hearts have yet to discuss figures in detail with us."

Caretaker manager Stephen Frail has meanwhile confirmed that the bulk of the team's pre-season preparations will take place at Riccarton this summer in a change from recent years.

"The places we've gone to in the past have been fine but we know everything is at our fingertips at Riccarton," said Frail.

"But we should be going to Germany later in July for around a week or so."

This is no more than Robbie Neilson deserves.
It is a rare player these days that stays a one club for their entire career and this lap of honour is long overdue considering some players get testamonials for 4 or 5 years at a team.

So from a Hibs fan to a Hearts player, well done Robbie, you've set a good example of what loyalty can be, both for your club and in your rightly recognised stand against racism...

Very true Albert - and I wish that more Hearts supporters would show similar loyalty in the other direction. Robbie has had a poor season, but some would have him hounded out the door.

what are Hearts up to?
Yesterday it was Frank Kerr, today it's Mark Kerr.
dare I say (hope) tomorrow it might be Brian Kerr?

At the end of a nightmare season it will be nice to turn up to Tynie, relax and enjoy a good day out watching some favourites strut their stuff.

Might be a bit depressing to see Rudi, Roman and Jules strut their stuff (what might have been, eh?) but gives us a chance to give them a proper send off and to say 'THANKS'.

I also hope that Pressley gets the respect he deserves. One badge thumping moment in the heat of the battle (having been booed for 90 minutes) does not take away the fact he was a tremendous leader and one of the few men to have lifted the cup for Hearts.

And I didn;t previously know about Robbie's charidee work. Respect to you Robbie for giving something back unlike the countless bling-merchants whose sole aim in football is to grab as much money as they can.

The White Cafu.

The Tackle.

Enjoy your day, Robbie, you deserve it.

Does the potential signing of Mark Kerr provide an indication of who the next manager may be? When managers move they often take a couple of their existing players with them.....

The turn out of ex players is testament to Robbies contribution to Hearts. Not the best we have ever had but no where near as bad as some would have you believe. Never seen him give any less than 100%.
Still has several years in front of him but will always be rememberred for 'the tackle' that won Hearts the Scottish Cup.

#11 - Not just the tackle but the penalty. When I saw him walking up to take the first in the shoot-out I though "What the f..." but he put it away excellently and we were always in charge from that moment on.

A true club man and deserving of his testimonial. Good to see many ex-club mates making the effort to return. Let's hope some bridges can be mended on the back of this as I still fancy Elvis on the coaching staff at some time in the future - and let's hope Vlad shows some tact and keeps well away.

Remember that Walter Kidd was "panned" by many fans until a miraculous two seasons when he was the age Robbie is now.The only man to have (for two seasons only) Davy Cooper in his back pocket. Maybe Robbie has similiarly not peaked yet. I'll be there on Sunday - and I hate testimonials/friendlies.
(Interesting to see/hear what reception Elvis gets)- You could argue both sides - It was not as quoted just a quick one off chest beating but then again he WAS PARTIALLY chased out by our huffy leader because he acted with backbone - something Vlad does not admire among his employees.

Can I suggest that if anyone else has tired of the disturbing rants of he who should not be named that they speak to the very helpfull and sympathetic Ewan McGroary (unsure of spelling) at the Edinburgh evening News.

His behaviour was hithertoo unknown to anyone above the moderating staff but he is now aware.

Not by Davy Cooper OR the other wingers for that brief period and I was not a Walter Kidd fan. Mid eighties it was. Surely you are old enough to remember - you were at all the games weren't you ? or was the Kestrel 9.2% too much for you? (surprisingly good beer)

# 21

He maybe hacked them but for a WEE WHILE whatever means he used - no one passed.
