HIBERNIAN captain Rob Jones last night declared himself fit to try and inspire a stunning Intertoto Cup comeback in Sweden this weekend.
The 28-year-old was forced off at half-time during Sunday's 2-0 first-leg defeat to high-flying IF Elfsborg at Easter Road.

After a disappointing 90 minutes when Mixu Paatelainen's men were distinctly second best, an injury to their skipper only added to the despondency.

But Jones lifted spirits yesterday by coming through training before watching some of his colleagues take part in a closed-door game against St Johnstone at their East Mains training base near Tranent.

Hibs travel to the Boras Arena for the return leg knowing a Scottish team has never come back from a home-leg deficit in European competition.

Magnus Haglund's side are also in fine form and were bidding to improve on one defeat in their opening 12 league outings against Gefle in the Allsvenskan last night.

But former Grimsby player Jones is hopeful Hibs will be more up to speed in Scandinavia with another week's training under their belts.

He said: "I trained yesterday morning and I'm fine. I came through okay during the session, so I'll be declaring myself fit, which is good.

"I just damaged the capsule on the top of the ankle which made it a little bit sore, but it wasn't too big a worry and seems okay after yesterday.

"I know the manager is to make some changes in Sweden, but I hope I'm not one of them. We face a tough task but the less injury worries we have the better.

"Elfsborg have been on a great run in Sweden and we're a little short of fitness, but we'll have a further week's training behind us when we play them on Saturday so hopefully that can help our cause."

Meanwhile, Easter Road forward Abdessalam Benjelloun – who was rested for the Intertoto Cup first leg on Sunday – was last night urged to join Anderlecht by the Belgian side's top player.

The Brussels club are believed to be eager to sign the Morocco international striker, 23, to cover for their injured Argentine forward Nicolas Frutos.

Benjelloun has been quoted in Moroccan media, saying: "I have other options, but I want to join Anderlecht."

Now his compatriot and Anderlecht frontman Mbark Boussoufa has advised

Benjelloun of the benefits of swapping the SPL for the Jupiler League.

Boussoufa recently signed a new deal with Anderlecht worth £1.2million a season, making himself the best-paid player in Belgium.

The former Chelsea player said: "I have spoken about Anderlecht with Benjelloun, and he is very interested in the possibility of a transfer to them. He told me that he would love the chance to play in the Champions League for them.

"I have also discussed the topic of him joining with Anderlecht's general manager, Herman van Holsbeeck. I don't yet know whether he will sign, but a good player like him is always welcome."

Although Hibs may eventually lose Benjelloun they received a boost yesterday with the news that Uruguayan midfielder Fabian Yantorno should be fit in time for the SPL kick-off next month.

The 25-year-old has agreed terms at Easter Road but that was conditional on him proving he had fully recovered from an horrific knee injury he suffered playing for his former club, Gretna, against Falkirk in January.

"I'm now only two weeks away from doing normal training with the rest of the players," he said.

"What I haven't had so far is contact with other players but I should be ready for that by the end of next week.

"Assuming there are no further problems, I should be available for our opening (Premier League] game at Kilmarnock on 9 August."

Hibs have been on a diet of pickled herrings and abba all week in a vain bid to get inside the psyche of the swedes - although I can see that just like sweden in the eurovision song contest it's going to FC Hibz zero points (pronounced with a heavy french accent).

Anybody got any jokes to cheer us all up - in the off season only please.

Good news re Yantorno - looked a cracking wee player last season until he got crocked, at least that's one midfielder in.

Still need another two IMO - Kerr and Morais are the worst two midfielders I've seen at ER. I've been watching the cabbage for over 25 years and despite some dross in the eighties/Alex Miller etc, these guys are truly mince. What worries me is that Morais seems to escape criticism cause he tries hard. Wake up guys, when was the last time this imposter did anything?

Add a left back (Hanlon good but too young), and a striker (Cheers now Benji, but GTF ya lazy wee puddin) and we might just be getting there.........

Jones is fit... Whoop dee.... Newsflash for Jones we're 2-0 down with the away leg to play... Has to be optimistic though I s'pose & miracles do happen so they say but I'll not be holding my breath.

Looks like Benji's au revoir then, just a question of how much of a fee we can nail Anderlecht for then surely. Still think he should have been given a chance but doesnt look likely now.

Yantorno deal looks like a done deal now and as Dood says at least thats one midfielder in who could be a good asset going on his early season form for the now dearly departed Gretna.

Once the intertoto nonsense is behind us I hope to be hearing about some signings coming in the next couple of weeks.

#5 Dood,

Can't agree on Morais. He works had and has talent. What he ain't got is consistency. On the other hand, saying Kerr is the worst midfielder you have seen at ER in 25 years possibly overestimates the man!!

How come Mogga could go out and sign 4 or 5 crackers whom we'd never heard of. He had the same, or less, money than Collins and Mixu, and yet he seemed to bring in class all the time. What's gone wrong??

Elfsborg lost 1-0 at home last night to the team who were 2nd bottom in the league.Hope Hibs get through cause i'm getting stick even though i'm a Celtic fan.

Who's it gonna be? ,

If the cabbage can get an early goal anything is possible but who can see hibs scoring with 'that' midfield. We do not have the talent right now to overcome this outfit but perhaps benji and zemamma will get a run around and give decent service to Fletch.
Just don't know about Morais. Good squad player to have perhaps?
Kerr must go.

#7 - Dublin.

That's the beauty of football mate, nobody ever agrees. For me, Morais never kicked a ball for the first two thirds of the season. He tried hard, yes, but that made him a disclipinary nightmare. I appreciate that he improved slightly towards the end of the season, but sorry - mind made up on him.

Saying 'whats gone wrong' is a wee bit premature yet. Collins' signing policy was one HUGE disaster. Mixu had to get players in quick in January so I think he should be given a wee bit of leeway there. Remember, we have nearly a month to go till the start of the season for him to get new players in - give the big guy a break.

Being a hearts supporter you will be used to fibs eh, what fibs are you gobbling up today then? Don't tell me, After looking for a new manager for over 2 years, Holloway is the next manager of hearts and the best man for the job, am I right?

Hope we keep benji for another season, last season was a write off with his "collins flu" etc, he was looking good in pre season and the season before, we need to give him a run of games and he will score goals for us. As for Jones, not the best defender in the world but he's the best we have at the moment, good to have him back for this game.

To me Morais seems to be a bit of a one trick pony with no end product. A very enfuriating player to match.

I will be very disapointed if we sell Benji. The talent is clearly there, you dont lose that after 1 year.

I would do yourself a favour and have no hope about the outcome. Probably a 1-1 draw which will allow yet another scottish team to be gallant losers.

Sorry, but thats about the most logical outcome.

Yeah, he looks good running with the ball but as soon as it comes to any sort of end product he seems to loose any composure and puts in a cross to no one or skies it, very similar to that clown O'Brien on the other side, all pace and no ball(s).

I like Morais primarily because he does stuff that non-one else in our team does. He takes players on at twice the pace of Fletch or Deano, he hammers crosses in, he is willing to shoot from the smallest opportunity and, yes, he works hard. Agree on Kerr - I have not seen anyone so blatantly hiding on a field and I could never understand the justification by the managers for his continued inclusion.

Last season I thought the only cause for optimism were the introduction of Paul Hanlon, John Rankin and Martin Canning and the return of Andy McNeill. Cannot understand why we are persisting with big Yves. There is no sign of him improving at a time in his career where he should be getting better in leaps and bounds on consistency, reliability and communication at the back.
