Hearts 4, Hibernian 0
THE Hearts team which kicked off the 2005-06 season had an unfamiliar look about it, having been hastily assembled by George Burley over a few weeks of the close season following his appointment as manager at the end of June. Given the number of new faces, there were concerns among the club's supporters about the length of time the new line-up might need before it could gel.

The initial omens were good, as Hearts opened their season with a 4-2 win at Kilmarnock. But that could have been a one-off, and certainly few of those who assembled at Tynecastle the following week expected anything like the one-sided match which ensued.

Managed by Tony Mowbray, Hibs had such able footballers as Steven Whittaker, Gary Caldwell, Kevin Thomson and Guillaume Beuzelin in the team, not to mention the former Hearts player Michael Stewart. Derek Riordan was unable to start the match after missing three days' training in the week preceding the game, but he was on the bench, and overall the Hibs squad's experience of the derby might have been expected to tell against such novices as Julien Brellier, Rudi Skacel and Roman Bednar. Instead, they were lucky in the end to finish second best.

The fireworks began before the match, thanks to Phil Anderton, the Hearts chief executive, who had brought his penchant for pyrotechnics with him from his previous post with the Scottish Rugby Union. They were nothing, however, compared to what followed.

Skacel, who had also scored in that opening win at Rugby Park, got the opening goal – then got a yellow card for over-celebrating. Mowbray was then sent to the stands by referee Hugh Dallas, and worse was to follow for Hibs when Caldwell was taken off midway through the first half with an injury which was later diagnosed as a punctured lung and a fractured rib.

Still, having been under the cosh for much of the opening 45 minutes, Hibs took heart from the fact that they had only conceded one goal and were therefore still very much in the game. They began the second half brightly, and might even have equalised when Thomson chipped just wide of Craig Gordon's goal.

But that was the high-water mark of their resurgence. Once Paul Hartley put the home team two up from the penalty spot there was only going to be one winner.

Stephen Simmons made it three when he collected a pass from Lee Wallace and shot past Zibi Malkowski, and the scoring was rounded off a few minutes from time by Saulius Mikoliunas, one of the first Lithuanians to join the club following Vladimir Romanov's taking of a major shareholding earlier in the year.

Romanov was there in person along with Anderton and the Hearts chairman George Foulkes, and by the end of the game the Kaunas-based businessman was waving his scarf in the air along with the rest of the home support.

There had been talk of the 'Romanov revolution' at Hearts since he bought into the club, but this was the first manifestation on a grand scale of what the Tynecastle side were capable of given their new spending power.

Still, while the home fans' celebrations went into overdrive, Burley for one was not getting carried away. "It could take another two to three weeks before we finally form a team," he said.

"Some of the new signings are not fully fit. There are still areas where we can get stronger. There is still a lot of work to be done.

"Remember how far behind Rangers and Celtic we finished last season. They have squads that are full of top international players. If we manage to finish third and take the club back into Europe then that would be tremendous."

Hearts did get back into Europe at the end of what turned out to be a momentous and traumatic season. And they did get stronger in the ensuing weeks, just as Burley had said they would need to.

In fact, for months after the man who is now the Scotland manager parted company with the club, they were still capable of playing the kind of confident, fast-passing, high-energy game they showcased in this early-season encounter.

They were also capable of turning over Hibs, as they proved not only at Tynecastle, where they won 4-1 in the league the following January, but also at Hampden, where they won 4-0 in the Scottish Cup semi-final.

They did not have everything their own way, however, and one match in particular that season was to be a real source of solace for Hibs supporters. But on a summer's evening in Gorgie three years ago all that was unknown and unborn. The Hearts fans were content, for a few hours at least, to live in the present and savour a spectacular win.

Happier days will return.

Starting Sunday.

Based on how much they cost when leaving Edinburgh, there was more than 20 million pounds of talent in that game.

Hibs and Hearts have done a great job replacing them....

Aitchie,

We pumped the Hibs with pub players like Neilson, Wallace, McFarlane, Simmons and Elliot all getting a roun out - how can this be with O'Connor, Riordon, Brown, Thompson, Whittaker and all the other flair players on the greenside?

#4 dunno - maybe you were just better on the day and deserved to win? It happens. We were after all "lucky to finish second best". He didn't say it but we probably weren't even worth the 0 goals that we ended up with.
And now the present: forecast for Sunday? Me, it's got 2-2 draw written all over it.

Looking at the Hibs side that day - you forget what a decent team Hibs had.

4-0 at Hampden 16/10/2008 08:19:43
Remember of course that we put another four past them in the second Tynie league game and four at Hampden. Hibs had a good team there, but when was the last time either team put 12 past the other half in one season?

#6, good shout.

they are just as entitled to be annoyed at seeing a good team broken up as we are. the reasons are different but the result is the same, a vastly poorer team.

hey-ho.

My main worry is when you look at the team WE had that day. Yes we had Robbie etc. etc. but what we would we give now for Hartley, Skacel, Brellier and Gordon in the side?

Jamboy,,

It is kind of sad actually... hearts and Hibs between them had the best players in the SPL and once again failled to capitalize... Same old story really though, it is all well and good seizing the innitiative with bringing through top talent from your youth set up or signing top talent from the continent and having a top-class coach (both sides) running the show but for arguably the two next largest teams in the SPL after the OF, it is a bit of a sickener that both clubs find themselves struggling to compete with the smaller teams in the SPL.

Vlad underestimated the task in hand and thought that it was a cake-walk winning the SPL but he has dithered and interfered so much since that he not only allowed them to catch up, but let them leave us standing again.

Still, such fond memories of this game, the Hampden demolition job, 1-0 against Rangers, lifting the cup and Skacel p155ing on every team he was put up against.

So we look forward now and sunday will show us exactly where the dust has settled and where the two teams stand now three years of smoke has cleared.

YOur not wrong there. This is why I think Sunday's game could be a pretty awful game with a lack of real quality in either side.

It'll be cagey to say the least in my opinion. With seemingly little else to play for this season apart from chasing 3rd the derby takes on an extra edge for both sides and I'm sure this will transmit through to the players.

I'm predicting it could be a case of "first goal the winner"..... Thats if we get a goal of course.....

I don't want to trawl back over the Burley era, but one of the best moments I've had at aaa Derby was when Rudi popped his goal in and then suggested to the Hibs fans behind the goal, that they'd be as well leaving now!!!
We don't have a guy like him in the team now, but then again, Hibs are a shadow of the team under Mowbray, so perhaps it will be more even, than some of the Leith brigade think.
Can't see another 6-2, the score predicted by a few Leith loonies in recent days, but Hearts can win this one. It all depends on who we put out on the pitch.
Over to you Laszlo.

#12 Scorchio: i agree with you....CSABA's under the microscope here as you do not need to be a tactical genuis to work out Hibs strenghs & weaknesses.

If he does his job and makes sure the players are suitably fired up then i am confident of a win.(however at the moment it is the 'IF' bit that worries me)

Watching Hibs last 2 games V Rangers(unbelievably bad-Worst performance V Gers in yrs) V Aberdeen (Very ordinary out played for large part of the game and lucky to be playing a Poor Aberdeen side)I dont see why we are so confident--Midfield is huge problem area--Boozy not replaced --Keenan -not good enough-Not bad up front -defense everywhere--I take Hearts to seak it 1-0 or at best a draw--Then again if Deeks up for it Jtarts could fall apart--Biggest Danger Mikey Stewart.

You are right we were woeful against Rangers, and destinctly average against aberdeen however Hearts are no better. We will score goals on Sunday they wont simple as that......well thats the way i see it anyway.

Gorgie's Finest,

Hearts on sunday have to come out and do what we haven't done at Easter Road for a while and thats take the game to Hibs. If we sit back defensively and allow Hibs to come at us we will have problems. All to much recently in Derby games especially at Easter Road we have not shown the same level of commitment as Hibs. As with all derbies more so the Edinburgh its played at 100mph especially those first 20/25 minutes. We need to come out of the blocks just as fast this time, if we do then i think we have a good chance. This is basically as others said Csabas job to install this into the team and have them playing that way. Surely players do not need motivated for a derby, and any that do don't deserve to Hearts players.

Defences are pretty even, both rubbish at the moment.
Hibs have on paper a better strike force (But have only actually scored one more goal than us so far this season)

Midfield is the key area, I know we have been saying for weeks 4-4-2 etc but i think in this game 5 in the Midfield is the way to go my midfield would be

Miko
Kingston
Stewart
Aguiar
Driver

With Miko and driver on the flanks (which Hibs are not very good at defending anyway) they could have a field day Kingston and Aguiar getting up to support the front man which i hope will be Tullberg and dropping back when needed. I think this midfield will dominate the game. Thats how Rangers won so easily the other week against hibs their midfield ran the show and dictated the play. Hibs midfield especially if mixu sticks to his diamond will be left standing. and even with a good strike force if they have no service they cant score.

whos going where for a bevy before the match on Sunday?

I have a nice little session starting early organised with m8's (Who include a couple of hobos as well) you always need the token hobo with you for a bit of fun and ridiculing. Think were all heading to the Murrayfield Hotel first, been told can get a bevy early doors in there, before we split up and us Jambos are heading either to the Bank pub on Royal Mile or Straight to Middletons or Artisan.

The Saint,

16 lets hope so--Must admit after seeing us tear them apart last yr yet fail to win....
20

VictorianGorgie,

#11 hibbyspurs, yes it could be a shocker, but then again it could very well turn out to be a very open, end to end match. if hibs play their 3 up top, hearts would do well to soak up the pressure and hit on the counter all the time. i think both teams are better on the counter attack than when they're dominating, both have players to exploit an open game, fletcher & riordan... driver & kingston.

the ace up our sleeve would be glen... if only someone at hearts would rate him worth a fekin game!!!
21

Gorgie's Finest,

It's not the rating Glen, it's a case of Csaba seemingly having personal issues with him thats keeping him out the team.

We need a good ariel player on Sunday Tullberg for the stint he got looked good enough in the air to give jones etc a hrd time and knock balls down to Driver, Miko, Kingston etc. Mole certainly can't do that and i don't think Glen could either.
22

VictorianGorgie,

16/10/2008 09:56:08
#21 GF, so it appears according to what folk have been saying. whatever the case, he should be in there. i'll find it a bit easier to take if we get pumped if we've had a go and created chances. don't want to see a rank display of hoofing it up to mole and tullberg 'cos i don't see the ball sticking too often. picking them off on the counter through the midfield is where i see hearts getting some joy.

You want to see if Csaba is in total control of things? The starting line up will tell all. Recent history shows that when Hearts are live on telly we get some strange line-ups.

If Ksanavicius starts......we might just have a clearer view of how much "dabbling" our leader is doing!

Alrighty guys, what is all this about Glen and Csaba? i agree that we need to start with a powerfull strikeforce but i would think that as a very good, fast terrier type that Gary would be at least considered as a replacement to run at the tired legs of the two huddies in the lasy 20 minutes or so... is there rumour of some kind of disagreement between Glaen and csaba?

I'm afraid if you remember back to last Autumn , the things I have mentioned above are VERY similar to last seasons efforts when organised by Korobochka. He and Laslo MUST be in colabiration to say the least. Far too many similarities involved.
