Hibernian 0 - 1 Motherwell: Paatelainen in need of late signings following home defeat to Motherwell

WHEN does a malaise become a crisis? Mixu Paatelainen, for one, must be hoping he does not find out any time soon.

No-one at Easter Road is pressing the panic button just yet. The Hibernian manager still hopes to sign another player before the transfer window closes tonight, and in any case, with a win and a draw from their four league games to date, the presen
t squad are just about keeping their heads above water.

But merely remaining afloat is hardly a lofty ambition for a club which was challenging towards the top of the table last season, and won a trophy the one before that. Paatelainen obviously wants more than that, and so does a support which has seen no tangible reward, other than that CIS Cup victory, come the way of a club which has probably produced more young talent than any of its rivals over the past decade.

What is not obvious so far is how ambitious the club itself is. We may have our answer today if a sizeable sum is splashed out on a new recruit, but so far Hibs fans are not overly optimistic. There may have been only a few hundred who felt strongly enough at the conclusion of this defeat to invite club chairman Rod Petrie to absent himself in no uncertain terms, but to that vocal minority can be added the tacit disapproval of a larger number who are simply not turning up.

Individual players may get it in the neck for errors, and Paatelainen might get some abuse if, for example, he is slow to make substitutions which some fans see as overdue, but on the whole the Hibs support appear convinced that their team and manager are doing pretty much all they can. They need reinforcements, and Petrie and his colleagues are the ones who will decide whether they get them.

"We're working hard on the transfer front," Paatelainen said after the match. He declined to talk specifically about a possible return to Easter Road for Celtic outcast Derek Riordan, and also declined to name which players had been the subject of his inquiries. There was one piece of positive news for Hibs fans, however, when the manager stated that Steven Fletcher was not one of those who had attracted interest.

Far from selling Fletcher off, Hibs need to keep him and recruit someone who can get the best out of him. Colin Nish can play a supporting role at times, but Fletcher could also do with backing of a more subtle kind than is offered by the former Kilmarnock target man. A fit and focused Riordan could work in that regard, but if he fails to agree terms with Celtic, Paatelainen might wish to reconsider the role played by Dean Shiels.

At present the manager is convinced that Shiels is an attacking midfielder, and the player has a licence to move around from the right touchline to a more central position. Given his current personnel, however, Paatelainen could see how Shiels fares in a more advanced position, just off Fletcher, and ahead of a more orthodox four-man midfield.

The return from injury of the holding midfielder Steven Thicot should also help bring more poise to the Hibs midfield. Ian Murray and Joe Keenan battled gamely in the middle of the park, but they were unable to gain a distinct advantage over their opponents.

Having said that, Motherwell only ever looked in control once they had scored, and that was because this was the kind of tight game which always looked like having one goal in it at most. Hibs thought they had claimed that goal just before half-time when Fletcher rose at the far post to head in a Shiels cross from the right, but the assistant referee's flag was up for offside.

Fletcher had earlier shot over the bar from around six yards, while Shiels had had a couple of efforts blocked. Motherwell's best chance of the half had come on the half-hour, when a 25-yard shot by Stephen Hughes was parried by Yves Makalambay in the Hibs goal.

The second half was similar to the first, with lots of effort creating few real scoring opportunities. Both teams had plausible penalty claims turned down, but in the end the winner came from open play. From just outside the penalty box David Clarkson passed to John Sutton, and the big striker had time to turn and pick his spot before scoring from six yards out.

After their demoralising CIS Cup defeat by Morton it was a distinctly bad time for Hibs to lose again at home. They need something – or someone – a little different to give their fortunes a lift.

I said before the season kicked off, give it a month and we could then guage what type of a season we are going to have, i also said it would be a long season.

Well it looks like it will be an extremly long season, we will finish in the bottom six, and be fighting out relegation.

How has the board allowed us to fall so far so quickly!!!!!, even writing a story about needing to buy players on the last day of the window is a joke, it has been clear to anyone that can see Hibs have needed to buy for a very long time, why did John Collins leave because the boardw ould not let him buy, so to chat now and say the only way out of this is to buy players is stupid.

This cannot be fixed quickly, the board are responsible, not Mixu or the players we have left....

Hardy a nightmare, we were a little unlucky to lose the game. Although full marks to Motherwell who played some good football.

We don't panic after a few bad results, we'll leave that to OF fans. Confidence in front of goal is all we're lacking just now. Hopefully we'll have Jones, O'Brian and the new French lad back in a couple of weeks.

While the Chief....

We've only played four games and already we are struggling due to injuries are we?????, O'Brian was on the bench as was the French guy, so are you saying we're that short of players we're playing injured ones??
5

Cammy,

Edinburgh 01/09/2008 03:33:36
#5 The other French guy, the one injured against Killie (Thicot).

The French boy on the bench was brought on far too late. Should have replaced Nish, who was having a mare. Mixu does have to take the blame for not changing things much sooner.

However, we did have some very good chances and should have taken something from the game.

#6 Us Hibies don't count the Scottish Cup, it's never been something that's interested us :-)

Radge Roberto,

Nightclub News Weekly 01/09/2008 04:55:33
did I read correctly that Radge Riordan is apparently barred from all nightcluds in Edinburgh ? that would obviously be a major issue in him signing for Hibs (or Hearts) and clearly to have any chance of signing him Sir Tom would need to invest in a nightclub before the transfer window closes.

good game by Rangers pundit - probably the best they've played for a long time.

Who are this mystery Hibs team who were challenging at the top of the table last season ?
Bizarre, because I though Hibs were staggeringly p**h for most of last term.
However, if printing these things allows the Hibs fans to continue their dreams of grandeur, then why not ?

#7 funny that Hibs not interested in the Scottish Cup-but I bet your great great great grad-daddy didnt think so.

Late signings-what have Hibs done with all the money they have taken in from transfers??

Having watched the old firm match yesterday I reckon Broonaldo-snigger- could be picked up cheaply-for say a couple of big ones..........

Thousands not millions!

As for WGS -what is the betting he will be Hibs next manager?

Incidently I am sure we would all hope Lennon makes a speedy recovery -ie he is back for the next humping at Ibrox. Isn't Karma a strange phenomenon?

Where do you start? Celtic outclassed? Champions League, your having a laugh? Clubfoot better than McGeady?

So many positives for the famous Glasgow Rangers, so much trouble for the Glasgow keektic. To think yesterday's stroll in the park was achieved without Rangers best player and on field leader, Cap'n Bazza. A final word for Cousin and Miller, what a feckin strike force! Or should we be saying what a terrible defence? Whatever way you look at it, trouble ahead at the Piggery.

Also, a word for the Celtic fans. The WGS hate campaign is now back in full swing after being suspended for the last half a dozen games of last season. WGS is the best manager Celtic have ever had, it is Peter Lieswell and the Celtic board you want to be venting your splean at.

I do like how the new rangers strip has a SCOTLAND flag on the back...must be a real blow for all the biggoted idiots who claim to support rrrrrangers.

The good news is Zibby has officially been released from his contract meaning MP has probably got his replacement lined up and will be signed up before tonights deadline.
The bad news it probably won't be Ante Niemi as Uncle Rod has tole MP to hold off until Novemeber and get him for nothing as opposed to the £90k he'd have to offer as a token gesture now...Pathetic RP. (For any Jambos declaring he would never come to Hubz, sorry, he already agreed a £4k per week deal with MP and as I say RP has no-no'd it so unless there's a change of heart, it won't be him)

23 Long time since I've bothered to post, but Dark Horse has to be commended for post 23. Verily, I say unto thee, a classic of its genre.

For Paulmac, Idee and the others who were so sure "the champions" were going to steamroller "losers Rangers", you'd better rearRange your predictions bhoys.

If it weren't for Ranger's collapse, together with a few dodgy decisions, you would have come into this season with absolutely nothing and would have had to face a couple of qualifiers for the CL. You were the proverbial b@w hair away from a disastrous season.

This season, but for some widely-recognised wrong refereeing decisions, you would be 8 points behind by now. (I'm not saying there's a conspiracy - just that some bad decisions went your way as some will inevitably go the way of Rangers later in the season). WGS would be long gone, methinks. I fail to see where all your optimism comes from. You folks were saying we'd need 2 on Maloney and 2 on Nakamura, so how could the midfield possibly cope. Very well, it seems.

Compare the dignified comments by Walter in the wake of those dodgy decisions against the post-match comments of WGS and Gary Caldwell yesterday. Shabby.

Finally, I must admit that I thought the pitch was in great condition yesterday. That boy Paddy McCourt did a grand job with the old Qualcast. Seems like he was worth the 250K, after all.

Maybe we can all have a guess what's big about him.

All the evidence suggests it not a reference to any measurement between the ears.

Presumably 'Hibs are down' in the same way that Walter was a keech manager a matter of days ago (and will be again, many times, before the end of the season.)

I understand that the wee guy was out celebrating his Highers results. Apparently Lardon started giving it the big "I am", you would think Lardon would have learnt his lesson from the last time.

Royalty, I made my comments on the game yesterday evening so I'll not go over them again. (depressing enough the first time).

Neil Lennon, disgraceful, and as you say, only a game. Sadly though, more than a game to some morons. I do often wonder mind you, why some players/coaches don't just give the West end a wide berth on a matchday evening. I know, I know, free country and you should be able to go out, but....

On an even more tragic note is the news of the death of Jamie Dolan. Massive heart attack whilst out running and only 39 years old. So sad.

According to the evening times it was an unprovoked attack on Lennon. No doubt we'll hear more later. NB, your comments are childish at best. Where did you get this "understanding" that Lennon was giving it the "big I am"? This sort of thing provokes tit for tat attacks and it may be a Rangers player will now get the same thing from some drunken morons purporting to be Celtic fans.

Lardon is famous for his appearances around Byres Road. His biggest mistake is usually inappropriate remarks and actions towards ladies. If he had stayed at home or gone out for a meal with his current burd, he would have been fine. Instead, he goes out giving it the "Big I am " and pays the price.

Or take the holy goalie with him as back up!

Speaking of Boruc, what a poor performance on Sunday. Time he knuckled down and cut out the wind ups and nonsense and concentrated on his football.

Rangers have shown they can bounce back from the adversity of the title loss and the Kaunas debacle, it'll be interesting to see if Celtic can do the same. I sincerely hope Strachan is running up a monumental phone bill today seeking out 2 mediocre full backs.

I say mediocre because time is against him, but mediocrity will be an improvement on the current jobholders.

First apologies to the Hibs and Motherwell fans but we have no choice as the Scotsman continues its pointless censorship.

Secondly well done to Rangers, their second half performance deserved the points, Celtic were a poor reflection of their abilities in the second half. Wilson being exposed as a psuedo left back. Artur had a poor game which is unlike him and will hurt especially as it is against rangers. It will not be repeated, so enjoy it while you can gers fans. As for those calling for "action"against Artur grow up. You should be looking at the antics of your own supporters and the disgraceful attack on Neil Lennon.

69 You should learn the fact before you open your "mouth" or type at your keyboard. Lennon had gone for a meal at a very nice Glasgow restaurant around the corner from where he lives. Please explain how this is inflammatory or "the Big I Am"

Your team played the better football and on the day deserved their victory.

Hope my team can now take some serious lessons from the match and regroup knowing that it will be no easy thing winning 3IAR.

Early days in the league yet. But a good start to the season, we really should have max. points at this time.

The team played well back to front and even Broadfoot I think had his best match at right back in RFC colours.

Thought the midfield dominated the match, and with the depth that the team has now, things do look a lot better than a few weeks ago.

Pleased for Miller who we have all slagged because of his lack of goals.

Also a special thanks to MOM for the transfer money it has helped bring some quality players to the club.

Lets not make excuses for these idiots as some Celts did for the Dida incident. Bazza and Lennon should be able to go and have a beer without some hate filled tube ruining their night and its just not good enough to accept that they really should stay indoors as to avoid these type of situations.

We must give this scum a clearer message.

Fair play to Kenny yesterday on his goals and im sure a lot of Celts will be happy for the guy in a strange sort of way but that still does not deflect from the fact that he is an awful CF. Most footie fans including bears do not honestly think he will break 18 goals this year and will miss plenty sitters.

If yesterday events enable RFC fans to get off his back and believe in the idea he is a class forward that will do the job over the season then maybe yesterdays painful defeat wasnt all for nothing.
