Published Date: 30 August 2008
Hibs boss Mixu Paatelainen introduced Merouane Zemmama in place of Rankin with 63 minutes gone as he sought the cutting edge required to break down the visitors' resolute rearguard.
However, it was Motherwell who finally found a breakthrough with 12 minutes remaining.

Clarkson finally found space after an afternoon tightly marked by Ian Murray and he threaded a pass into the area.

Sutton, with his back to goal, made the most of the space he was granted by the home defence to turn and rifle his shot into the roof of the net from 12 yards.

Hibs fired high balls forward in the closing stages but their hopes of snatching a draw drifted away as referee Dougal waved away substitute Steven Pinau's appeals for an injury-time spot-kick.

A John Sutton strike 12 minutes from time was enough to give Motherwell all three Clydesdale Bank Premier League points in a tight encounter at Easter Road.

The former St Mirren marksman pounced on David Clarkson's pinpoint pass to turn and drive in a late winner for the UEFA Cup-bound side.

Neither team created many clear-cut opportunities during a dour match which only came to life in flashes and Hibs were left again to rue their failure to turn glimpses of the target into goals.

Sore one.
But apparently Riorden is likely to move to the Hibs. He is needed.
Tough going from now. a real uphill struggle already but things will turn round, I am still confident and will be sorry if the usual Mixu must go crowd appear. Plenty time.

"Hibs fired high balls forward in the closing stages but their hopes of snatching a draw drifted away"

That'll be the hoofball approach then?

Real Madrid still monitoring Fletcher? Wonder what they're thinking now.

#1 Well, we'll find out tomorrow what that nice young man is going to do although I'd have thought the Celtic management team would more on their minds tomorrow.

I think the supporters of you're rivals will be hoping Mixu stays.

Said it last season, Mixu could not run a one ticket raffle, and pull the winner.

Well at least the Hibs have the top story on the football home page.

Its the only thing they will be top of this season.

This chunk of the report on the match must have quite a lot missing at the front end. No mention of the Hibs missed chances, particularly in the first half, or the Fletcher headed goal that looked good but was chalked of for offside. Got to see that one in the highlights.

Hibs fans should not worry, Hibs will come good, they have a lot of good players. Strong performance from Canning today and I would like to see a Canning / Jones central defensive partnership given a chance. Lewis Stevenson is a good young player but he is a little small to be the regular left full back so that needs to be addressed.

Murray had a better game today in the defensive midfield role and such an anchor is needed. With Murray in that role (Thicot will also play there) Keenan looked a better player today and much more creative. Nish is a nuisance type of player but as a finisher, he would have to give way to Riordan if he arrives. Rankin is, for me, a bench player only and either Zemmama, Yantorno or O'Brien could be played ahead of him.

Unfortunately I was at this game. Could see the Motherwell goal coming and we badly needed Obrien or Pinau on, but Mixu did nowt. Hopeless.

Hibs are going to have to turn the corner soon or something (or somebody) will give.I think the next few weeks will be crucial

Methinks Mixu has turned too many corners already and has ran up his own backside!(perhaps that is where the elusive Riordan is?)

Only 11,285 at fester road yesterday. Doesn't compare well with Hearts' 14,219 against Motherwell a few weeks ago does it? lol!

Hmm..
An awful lot of blind faith and optimism from a few of us.
I agree we have a fair number of good skillful players. But what I also see is these good skillful players running around in circles like headless chickens, eventually disappearing up their own bottoms, due a total lack of tactical leadership.
Riordan can come back if he wants, but I suspect he'll be made to look very ordinary under Mixu's ruddership.
No wonder Benji wants to jump ship.
There is no clear direction, focus, or pattern to Hibs' play at the moment. We can buy all the talent available if we want, but under Mixu we shall never be anything other than pure bad.

So many rumours. So many times "A done deal" I'll just say this. If Riorden is available and if we can get him for a couple of hundred thou plus his wages, then he'd better come. If he doesn't and if it's down to the board then I'll have bought my last ST.

The board have chosen not to invest in the team which is the main part and purpose of the club.

I'm reserving judgement on the goal we lost yesterday until I've seen it again on Setanta but I think I know who's to blame. In any case, I agree with Neutral. Jones and Canning should be given a chance.

The ref did his bit for the mighty celtic today. Alas Venegoor was an asshole and undid it. Mind you there's nothing wrong with kicking a horse is there...

Desmond will need to pay the ref more next time, just to make sure. Anyway a few pens here and there in the SPL will keep us going.

Look at the photos in the Sunday papers and see who is falling over between Sutton and the goal. Yes, I think we know who it is!

At the age of 60+ surely you have bought your last ST? Or did you not mean sanitary towel?
