Hibs 0 - 1 Wigan: Pre-season ends with another loss for sad Hibs

HIBS cannot be accused of having taken it easy during this pre-season campaign, and Wigan Athletic last night made it seven defeats out of eight pre-season games for Mixu Paatelainen's clearly discouraged team. Amr Zaki's strike after 68 minutes proved decisive, with Hibs again looking toothless in attack.
A pair of competitive matches against strong opposition from Sweden got this mini-season under way for Hibs, and a pair of fixtures against Premiership opposition has rounded off a difficult few weeks. In between times was fitted a meeting with Barce
lona, as well as little-to-gain matches at Raith Rovers, Cowdenbeath and Clyde. It won't be a formula that will be repeated next pre-season, that much seems certain. Paatelainen will simply hope he gets the chance to devise a different programme next summer.

His side are showing signs of improvement but few can claim Hibs are in fine fettle as they prepare to welcome the new league season. The prospect of a journey to Kilmarnock this weekend will not lift spirits although Paatelainen continued his efforts to add more quality to the ranks last night. A French trialist striker was introduced at half-time, and former Gretna player Fabian Yantorno was given another chance to impress after the interval. Neither did much to state their case, with time now at a premium for Paatelainen.

Nevertheless, the manager sounded confident. "I thought we looked sharp, and that tells me we are ready for the new season," he said. "I am just disappointed to have lost again."

Hibs have now scored only twice this summer, but Paatelainen remains confident the goals will come. "It doesn't worry me," he said. "We have created chances, everyone can see that."

Hibs showed flashes of inspiration, but these moments were fleeting in a match where the dominating theme was the physical attributes of the opponents. Hibs were dwarfed in midfield especially. The lightweight combination of Dean Shiels, Joe Keenan and Alan O'Brien were outmuscled in the first-half. Steven Thicot provided Hibs with some presence in that area. The young French player was deployed in a role where he operated just in front of the centre-backs. He stuck to his task and provided some guile until he went off just after the hour-mark, as Hibs made their second raft of substitutions.

Hibs goalkeeper Andrew McNeil, who was looking to atone for errors committed during Saturday's defeat against Middlesbrough, caught the eye in the opening minutes. He twice made saves which prevented certain goals. First McNeil did well to block at his near post as Zaki aimed to convert from close range, and then the keeper stylishly tipped a header from the same player over the bar a minute later. A David van Zanten clearing header which came back off his own post reflected the extent of Hibs' disarray.

Hibs came closest to scoring two minutes before the break. A free-kick from Chris Hogg was helped on by Jones. The lurking Fletcher latched on to the opportunity and volleyed towards the far corner of the goal. Wigan were saved by the post, however. Colin Nish had the chance to convert the rebound but, when off-balance, swiped only at fresh air. Shiels, who was following-up, then wildly lashed the ball wide.

It was a moment which seemed typical of Hibs' luck at present and the second-half offered little respite. McNeil's form of the opening minutes was but a memory when he carelessly threw the ball out of play. The next he knew Wigan had built up an attack on the other flank, with Zaki ending a powerful run into the box with a neat finish over the prone McNeil. The keeper was immediately replaced by David Grof, who was later saved by a post after Marlon King sought to double his side's advantage from the edge of the box.

Hibs: McNeil (Grof 70); Van Zanten (McCann 62), Hogg (McCormack 70), Jones (Canning h-t), Hanlon (McCann 62); Shiels (Morais h-t), Thicot (Chisholm 62), Keenan (Rankin h-t), O'Brien (Campbell 62); Nish (Trialist), Fletcher (Yantorno).

Wigan Athletic: Nash; Melchiot, Boyce, Bramble, Figueroa; Brown, Palacios, Valencia, Kapo; Zaki, Heskey.

Joe tort, like the mob across the city are so fond of saying at the moment, things are heading in the right direction at least...

So we haven't won a game in ages, we've only played two games that were worth anything. and that was against fitter and more organised opposition.

We need to find the scoring touch again and we'll do OK this year. A period of serious rebuilding must be done, but at least we look more coherent as a team now than we did a couple of weeks ago...

Still, While The Chief...

Onca Makalanby gets back he'll be the No.1 Goalie, McNeill has a golden opportunity to ensure he keeps the spot, so come serious game time he may just stand up and be counted.

Problem with McNeil is that when he stood up to be counted, nobody could see him behind the defence and opposition attack. Need to get a commanding physical presence in goal urgently. Even Makalambay, at 6ft 6inches does not seem to have the physical power to command his area the way that, for example, the Swedish keeper for Elfberg did.

Wigan were very strong tonight although Hibs played soem good football at times without too much penetration. After a promising introduction on Saturday, Keenan had a very ineffectual game tonight. Really don't see him as a commanding midfield player to run the game and stamp his authority on the opposition. Easily knocked off the ball. Yantorno tried to get things going but was too eager to impress. He delivers a great free kick though and I think that, more than Keenan he is worth a contract. THe French trialist has not quite got it I think.

ozdon,

#7 Good point McNeill's height is his biggest issue, and a commanding figure in goals makes all the difference, but don't think we need a new goalie yet, our midfield and striker depat may need looking at first and through in a left back whilst your at it, then we may have the bones of a good team.

Reading the reports though i do think we can look forward to the start of the new season with some optimism, Clyde and Cowdenbeath and bounce games and not much should be read into them, this time next week, we shall have a fair understanding of what the season may hold up for us..

Well done the Hibees! That's you got all the defeats out of the way before the real show starts! Now we're playing teams like the Jambos and the Gers things will get much easier, though a decent keeper still wouldn't go amiss.

Mixu out by the end of this week, please...
The guy is an absolute..total...waste of time and energy. He simply has not got the faintest idea of what it's all about at this level. Not the faintest!
Just go, Mixu, before you do yourself and the club further, lasting damage..
...and take Jones and Petrie with you.
Many thanks

#10 - That'll be the same Mixu that inherited a hideous mess left by the previous, incompetent regime. The same Mixu that inherited a squad of players signed by that regime which were clearly not fit to wear the jersey. But what a lot of people seem to be forgetting, the same Mixu that took that shambles, motivated them and dragged them to within two games of Euro qualification.

I appreciate that things haven't been hugely rosy, but I'll retain my faith until the nitty gritty is well under way. Under difficult circumstances, he's kept his head up and tried to talk things up.

Keep positive Mixu and see you on Saturday where you and the boys will receive my full support.

At least TV viewers will be spared the sound of the Sash and Rule Britannia plus numerous Union Jacks from Scotland's loyalist Unionist supporters.

#3. What utter garbage! What teams were fitter and more organised than hubs? Do you mean Middleborough and Wigan? Two teams who are one week behind hubs with their pre-season training? What on earth are you on about?

Was the hubs embarrassment in the inter-tattie not all about additional pre-season fitness and organisation? Just more lame excuses from the wee team as usual.

I think you'll find he was referring to Elfsborg. Hard to debate that they were fitter and more organised given the stage they were at in their season. So hardly an embarassment and certainly no excuses in his post.

Reason why no comments are allowed on Hunny stories is because they always degenerate into sectarian bile - 'aye well, Celtic sing offensive songs too likes...'

But now we all know that King Billy was gey-hey...

Good though that our TVs will be Sash-free in the following months.

As to Hibs... well a draw against Raith is progress.

We MUST get a new keeper asap-None of those employed by Hibs are proper keepers-loan them all out & buy one with money from Clayton Donaldson sale to Crewe.

We also need a midfielder too. Losing Peter Thompson from Linfield to Stockport bleeding county is crazy-Pistol Pete would've been great at E.R.

If we don't win many of our first dozen SPL games then its tattie bye to Mixu & hello Yogi hopefully.

Hibs failed miserably in the two competitive games they did play, the Intertoto.

They haven't won since April - including SPL games at the end of last season.

Where's the grounds for optimism?

"Where's the grounds for optimism?"

We've not signed a "manager" who's biggest claim to fame is kicking the wee fat striker on the ankles. We're not about to embark on a signing spree from the further reaches of deepest darkest Africa. We're not being run by a fax machine. We're not HoMoFC.

That gives great grounds for optimism.

What a total tube you are. Your obsession with Hibs is actually quite disturbing. Shouldnt you be worrying about your team so close to the season start?

No one denies hearts average gate is circa 2000 higher than Hibs last season but quite frankly who gives a monkeys...

I like how you rounded the hearts average up to 16000 but didnt quite do Hibs the same courtesy by rounding ours down to 13000 therefore inflating your figure by a cool 1000.

The actual attendance average last season was 15877 for the yams and 13840 for the Hibs a difference of 2037.... Just a thousand less than your "estimate".

If your going to come on here and quote figures at least try and be a)correct, b)objective, c) use the same methods for rounding up or down rather than doing one way & then the other to satisfy your tiny little desires.

With that sort of creative accountancy you should apply for a job in the Hearts accounts department, youd fit right in you know.

Sell big buy small that's Ebeneezer's policy and it's costing Hibs dearly.
We trawl Inverness St Mirren and Gretna for players and they cannot provide us with the quality required to challenge for a European spot.
The writing was on the wall at the 'split' last season and nothing has been done to address the problem.
It's not about poor defending it's about poor defenders and there lies the problem.......for every goal we score the defence are capable of losing two.
I fear for us.

Well I am glad this quite frankly shocking pre-season is over. I dont hold much hope at all for the coming season, who knows they may surprise us. Strange thing is that if we do find ourselves at the wrong end of the table the board will somehow find some money to bale us out. Would have been nice to have actually built upon the decent teams we have had, but not going to happen with our money obsessed board.

Anyhow, lets all laugh at Rangers anyway....

Note to all hearts fans, your season is about to come crashing down around your ears, because of last nights result Vlad thinks Kaunas have a great chance of qualifying for the group stages of the champions league, this is the best part, he is now considering sending Kingston there on a 6 month loan deal! oh how the tables have turned! if this rumour is true would that make hearts the kaunas B team?

Did anyone hear Tom Miller last night?... He launched a scathing attack on the Rangers.

Keith Jackson sounded like he was crying on to his key board and the bitterness was simply deliscious!

All that is missing now is a wee bit of 'ThePundit' baiting and this wonderfull day will be complete.

Pilly-Biter tore them a new one last night and Dougie Donnelly looked like he was going to greet.

That wee ginger bloke (forget his name) had the cheek to call Kaunas a dump too... Isn't he from Dundee?

Charlie Adam is just about the best comedian I will see this festival season and McGregor's net was bulging more often than his keks when he's wenching those ropey strippers of his.

That free kick was a beauty and they had no answer to Pilly-Biter all game... Very fitting that he should score the winner.

I wish Ned-boy and Gums had been playing though as this will be the official Rangers excuse.

Aye, Hearts are as shocking as Rangers but for a fraction of the hype and wealth. Hibs are shocking too but Hearts still get bigger crowds. Even when Hibs are 'successful' their crowds are pathetic.
