Published Date: 25 June 2008
HIBERNIAN were yesterday linked with a possible move for former Rangers striker Jonatan Johansson as manager and fellow Finn Mixu Paatelainen brushed aside fresh speculation surrounding the future of top scorer Steven Fletcher.
Reports have suggested that Alex McLeish will move for Fletcher – who has already attracted attention from Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona – should Birmingham City lose Scotland talisman James McFadden this summer.

Fletcher is tied to Hi
bs until 2013 after signing a new contract at Easter Road in December but both halves of the Old Firm, as well as Spurs, Newcastle, Bolton, Manchester City, Hull City, Middlesbrough and Portsmouth, have been credited with an interest in the 21-year-old.

Paatelainen recently insisted the much-fancied Scotland cap would still be at the club for the coming campaign and he has heard nothing to change his mind since.

And, while rumours surrounding Fletcher's stay at Easter Road persist, so do those connecting Paatelainen with a swoop for countryman Johansson.

Hibs are thought to have had a £150,000 bid for the Finland international rejected by current side Malmo during the January transfer window and stories in Sweden are again linking the one-time £3.25 million Charlton Athletic signing with a return to the SPL.

Paatelainen yesterday refused to be drawn on the stories, and those associating Clayton Donaldson, Alan O'Brien and Yves Makalambay with possible transfers away from the club, but he appeared to leave the door open for the possible arrival of friend Johansson.

He said: "There was speculation about him in January and it has just come back again.

"Jonatan Johansson is at Malmo and has a contract until the end of the season.

"If something happens or it is possible for it to happen then we'll let everyone know, but at the moment he is at Malmo and there is nothing happening.

"These stories are always coming up, about Fletcher and now Johansson, one is coming and one is going. People are saying Donaldson is going, O'Brien is going, Makalambay is leaving. There is so much speculation, which is always the case.

"People need to be entertained when there are no matches, so they start talking and spreading wild rumours.

"Before anything happens they are just rumours and I don't think people should believe everything they hear."

Meanwhile, Paatelainen has indicated players will only be allowed to leave the club when their replacements have been lined up.

With the team in action on Sunday week in the Intertoto Cup, probably against Swedish side Elfsborg, the Finn has confessed that any transfer deals may take a while longer to thrash out. He said: "There will be some players leaving and hopefully a few coming in as well. But it will take a little more time and until we know exactly who is coming in we don't really want to be letting players go."

Paatelainen also revealed that goalkeeper Zibi Malkowski is back training with Hibs and may yet be given a chance to stake a claim for a place next season.

Malkowski, who still has a year left on his Hibs contract – is back training with his team-mates at East Mains after his loan deal with Inverness expired.

Makalambay may be included in Belgium's squad for the Beijing Olympics at the end of July, a tournament which could keep him out of the country for up to a month, and the experienced Pole Malkowksi – who has spent spells on loan with Gretna and Inverness in the past two seasons – may be drafted in as cover.

"Zibi is back with us. He is our player, he is under contract with us and has fitted back in with the rest of the players in training," said Paatelainen.

I don't like Mixu Transfer Window Job. I am Happy Fabian Yantorno and David Van Zanten. but Guillaume Beuzelin, Keegan Ayre, Abderraouf Zarabi, Patrick Noubissie, Dermot McCaffrey, Mickaël Antoine-Curier, leave Free transfer.

Today Kevin McDonald leave Dundee..He sign Burnley. Money is not 1M!!!!!! £500,000 is his price.

some SPL Clbu can try sign Him. Hibs too. If Mixu try £350,000~£400,000+Mickaël Antoine-Curier+Keegan Ayre..I think Dundee no reject offer...I am very disappointed.

Zibi Malkowski return is fine. but Hibs have good 3keepers..McNeil and Maka fine young keepers. Grof too. I hope Grof loan or Malkowski(sorry) sell want. He can good helper First division team.

KK is a foreign poster who comments on all of the threads, not just Hibs. Believe me when I say his English is improving.

And more times than not what he has to say has a valid point. So why don't you just crawl back to your slum be it the pink cow shed at Swinecastle, or somewhere in Weggie town you prat!

Sweet.

You're having a laugh "best football memories" nightmares more like, you're obviously a Jambo as they are they only people in Edinburgh whi will be glad to see Zibby back. Hopefully he will be punted somewhere else on loan for the season then his contract will be up and he will be offski.

JJ would be a great signing if he still has the ability he had at Charlton. Mixu also needs to add a big strong midfielder a left back, and Riordan back would be good as well.

Are there any hibs fans brave enough to talk about how they REALLY feel about the possibility of Fletcher being replaced by Johansson? With Johansson up front Mixu will be delighted to revert to type and have everyone just hoofing the ball up to JJ, so much for the green Brazil.

Hearts have problems, but at least we still have ambition.

Just while I think of it, can any of you cabbages tell me whether Ziby ever did find his name onto the Hibees Hall of Fame alongside the famous five?

And is it true that 40% of the famous five saw the light and found their way to Tynie?

I'm just a simple Jambo and need you cabbages to educate me on these high-level matters.

What ambition, to get into the top 6?

To find a new manager?

To get your debt down?

Still think you're going to build a £51m stand. Global credit crunch, liquidity crisis, soaring cost of building materials...sure you are. It's another Declinecastle 'done deal' bit like McGhee.

Your right he defo isn't a replacement for Fletcher, in fact we haven't replaced any of our big players that have left over the last few seasons, and we never will! we won't sell Fletcher for £3 million and even replace him with a million rated player as we won't increase our wage structure. so yes there is disappointment, however JJ has the experience and i for one would gladly see him at ER, if anything he can still score goals and hopefully it will rub off on the other young strikers we have at ER..

we had a pretty big squad last season so we did have the quantity but defo not the quality - DVZ and hopefully Yantorno add that wee bit of class we missed last season, so hopefully we can add a few more experienced decent players in the squad instead of raking the conference for players that we all know won't cut it..

you never know, if we manage to get the quality players in which fit our wage structure (there must be some) then even O'Brien might decide to play next season!!

just on your note - without picking a fight - what ambition are hearts showing right now? the last i seen they have tried to tie down a player for 5 seasons that ran away last season?

Jam Tarts 1874,

Ambition? Hahaha, brilliant. I just about fell of my seat there. Thats the problem, too many of you Jambo's have no idea that there is a distinct difference between ambition and stupidity. Stupitidy got you in the mess you are in at the moment, not ambition.

But please tell me, what exactly is ambitious about having an owner that picks the team, no real manager for 6 months, players sold, club legends released or sold, having a 40 million overdraft, no communication to the fans etc etc. Ambitious? Back in the sand with you you poor deluded lad!!

Calm down lad:-)

Hibs have no ambition either so neither team has the right to gloat.

Petrie has sold most of all but one of the best teams assembled at ER in decades, Fletcher being the last. Mixu has replaced them with lower league rejects.

Yes, we have had no manager for months, but in that time Hibs have gone through two already, whilst Petrie has been selling selling selling.

AS far as stupidity is concerned, we are not stupid. We now know that Romanov is a total F.uck up and must go.
22

Lenny,

Rambo,

Oh I'm calm. 1874 is just about the biggest believer there is however, and sometimes he needs told.

I totally agree Hibs dont have ambition, I have never said we do have. My point was more that either do Hearts. Hibs could rack up 28M of debt (or whatever it is) and people could say we are ambitious. Nothing ambitious about gambling with the clubs future however.

Too many Jambo's thought that Hearts were being ambitious when they were getting further and further into debt. This is not ambition, its just stupidity. This is what I was referring to when I said stupidity, I wasnt actually calling the support stupid.

I have supported Hibs since 1966. I have friends who have done the same with Hearts. I have been a season ticket holder at Easter Road since 1985. However, apart from a couple of seasons in the 1970s where we split the old firm in consecutive seasons and once in the 1990's where Motherwell were 2nd and us third, I have never ever thought we have ever looked like doing so again. I have watched occasional great seasons with entertaining football and I fear we are going to wait a good few more seasons before we see anything again like the team Mowbray put together.
The point, however, is that I am now in a situation where I wonder what the point is. The ugly Sisters have a stranglehold on our game and to be run viably we have to sell our best players to either them or down south. (I once vowed I was never going back after they swapped Iain Munro for two absolute diddys from Rangers). Loyalty is commendable but neither we (nor Hearts) can compete with them.
I refuse to get into arguments about Hibs and Hearts as they have both seriously underachieved throughout their historys. 4 times each as champions, they have won more cups and our record in one such cup is deplorable but neither really have anything to brag about.
Anyway, I think we are in for a season of mediocrity although with our finacial status we should just about make top six. I think Dundee Utd will be the third team this year but attractive to watch? Nope, usual Levein effective stuff on limited budget.
Anyway rant over.
25

Amburno,

25/06/2008 10:53:38
Being a Hibs fan I don't expect us to win the league, the infirm have that sorted with the money they can offer players. On the odd occasion Hibs challenge in the top half of the table. It's good when the team play entertaining football and again, on the odd occasion, we have a decent cup run.

Realistically, until Hibs are in a position to have more fans, increase wage cap, then our occasional good seasons is all we will have.

Even Saint Tony's team never won anything, but he did bring pride back to the club after the horrendous Bobby "entertainment is at the cinema" Williamson.

I'll still watch and support my team but with a realistic view in my head but hope of something more in my heart.

Can't argue with any of that. Unfortunately its the way scottish football is. As you mention, hibs and Hearts have won 4 leagues each, and in addition Aberdeen have also only won 4 Leagues. Old Firm have pretty much always dominated Scottish Football, and its even worse now with the financial element. However, I wouldnt want Hibs to risk their future by getting in huge debt to finish say 2nd for example.
27

petegeneva,

geneva 25/06/2008 11:08:47
Opening up a debate....
Let's assume for a moment that the EPL and lower leagues were to welcome all scottish teams (or those that wanted) into their structure. Even if we (Hibs , Hearts) had to start at a low level (say Division Two) would that be welcomed? Would that stir up scottish football and bring some excitement back?

I'd go for it but since I live abroad it would affect me less, obviously....
28

Lenny,

25/06/2008 11:16:39

Yes, on the basis that with the tv money we would receive compared to here then the likes of Hibs and Hearts would be able to fulfil their potential.

Amburno,

I wouldn't be up for that, more travelling, possible increase in fan fighting (scotland v england) plus we would be even further down the pecking order of attracting players as there are even more bigger clubs in england than the old firm. I think that we would struggle to make the championship!

So it's a no from me. I hope that we (hibs) complete the infrastructure so that will give us a platform to steadily increase fans, wage cap and hopefully be more attractive to investors. The by-product of this will hopefully be more success on the pitch which will then just fuel more fans, wage cap, investors etc...

It's a long term plan though and that is the problem for some supporters

#31 so no positives at all then? :-)
I started the debate so I'd better respond:
maybe some folk would just go to fewer away games;
TV revenues would increase as we made our way through the leagues;
can't argue with the 'hooli' argument;
not sure about quality, surely we'd still bring through youth plus we pretty much compete with lower division sides for players as it is.

Anyway, thanks for entering into the debate. I was just wondering how the other scottish sides can see a future away from the OF and its baggage.

Great effort Van City. You must think so also as you posted it twice.

What's the prospects for the cabbages lifting a trophy this season?

And as for bile, I never spout it. It wasn't me who signed Ziby and then kept him on. Because he makes your club a laughing stock, have a go at the management who have decided he is good enough.

Au contraire kiwijoke, i think you'll find i posted 2 seperate posts relating to your 2 garbage, bile filled and rotten to the core posts. Thats right KJ, 2 seperate posts. Not the same one twice, as you seem to think judging by your last post. Clearly you havent even digested, or even registered what i have said. Ill not go on about it as, on your own admission, you are nothing but a simple Jumbo. Nowhere have i suggested it was you who signed agent Malkowski, you are unable to distinguish between 2 seperate posts so i doubt very much you are qualified to broker a proffesional footballers contract. My club, my dear boy( i thought you were an adult, but not so sure now), is by no means a laughing stock, yeah sure we know RP is a tight wad, and we have a history of sh*te goalies and we havent won the SC for a long long long time. Compare to the daily , bowel rendering cack that comes from Swinecastle. No comparison really.
