Kilmarnock 1-0 Hibernian: 'Lazy' players infuriate Paatelainen as misery continues to hound Hibs

MANY feared Mixu Paatelainen had made himself a hostage to fortune with his constant assertions over the summer that everything would fall into place when it really mattered. This was the Hibernian manager's mantra when staring out from the rubble of pre- season, during which his side failed to win any of their eight matches.
It became ever harder to be convinced, but then Paatelainen was the one operating with his players on a daily basis, and, indeed, had brought many of them to the club himself. Most assumed he must know best.

So it was perhaps with a greater sense
of deflation that the 1571 travelling Hibs fans watched another goal-less performance from their side – the eleventh in 12 games – and, worse, yet another defeat. From the evidence of a first league outing, the manager's conviction that it will be all right when the competitive games begin appears skewed. He himself admitted to being deeply perturbed by this opening-day defeat against a hard-working Kilmarnock side.

Paatelainen has already signalled the need for one cull of first-team players. After a 3-0 defeat at Clyde last month the manager told up to nine players that they would no longer be considered for selection. Now the manager is set on another weeding-out exercise after the concession of a winning goal which Paatelainen put down to sloth on the part of some players.

Jamie Hamill's strike after 80 minutes stung the Hibs manager. He had just seen David Van Zanten, his right-back, leave the park for treatment for a head injury after a clash with Simon Ford. This left Hibs, who had sent on their third substitute just minutes earlier, with only ten players. Insult was added to injury when Hamill, who replaced Ford, capitalised on a fine run by David Fernandez and rifled the Spaniard's lay-off into the net from 20 yards.

The goal stemmed from one of countless Hibs attacks to be broken down on the edge of the Kilmarnock penalty area, due to a combination of gritty defending and lack of imagination and confidence on the part of those yellow-shirted players involved in the raids. Already outnumbered, Hibs then paid the price for not getting men back behind the ball quickly enough. It left Paatelainen livid.

Van Zanten might have been left with a thumping headache but he had one reason to consider himself fortunate, since the continued effort of the club physio to stem the flow of blood from the wound led to him missing his manager's post-match rant. The stitched-up cut was still weeping when he presented himself to reporters 30 minutes after the final whistle, by which time Paatelainen had made clear his disgust at the manner of Hibs' defeat.

"Our midfield just didn't want to defend," said the manager. "Certain individuals know. If you have lazy players like that out on the pitch you are always open, and liable to lose goals. Players with a lazy streak won't play for my team. I am particularly disappointed that it happened today." Asked if the players had accepted this interpretation, he said: "They have to accept it. It is a fact. That is what happened."

One of Paatelainen's qualities is that he has no desire to feel sorry for himself. There was no attempt to focus on the issue of Van Zanten's injury, despite it having a bearing on the result. There were other reasons to view the defeat as unfortunate.

Chris Hogg saw a net-bound header blocked by Colin Nish, his own player. Nish chose the day of his return to Rugby Park to have his worst game in a Hibs shirt, much to the delight of the home fans. He could not do anything right, and was even involved in the collision which saw Kilmarnock's Ryan O'Leary go off with a dislocated shoulder. More harmful to Hibs' afternoon was his lack of application and courage when presented with a glorious opportunity to score after just 15 minutes. Steven Fletcher threaded a fine pass through, and Nish simply side-footed the ball into Combe's hands.

Intriguingly, both striker and goalkeeper are Hibs fans, but here they colluded to make it a bleak day for their fellow supporters in the away stand, with Combe also saving well from Fletcher in the first half. Nish is likely to suffer the consequences, with Paatelainen still hoping to add another striker to his squad. "Once again we had a chance in front of goal and did not punish the opposition," the Finn lamented. "You must tell your striker to score in that situation. Simple as that."

A day which Paatelainen promised would provide evidence of his side's progress instead offered worrying signs of a lack of unity in the ranks, with Fletcher and Dean Shiels involved in a slagging match after the former had elected to shoot from what the better-positioned Shiels clearly felt was too far out. The wily Jim Jefferies could only observe this all from the Kilmarnock dug-out with a growing satisfaction. His players did everything required to frustrate Hibs, and are now intent on proving a few people wrong.

"A few wins and performances like that might shut some people up," he said as he left the press room, a comment aimed at those who have cast his side as relegation candidates this season. It is Hibs who are perhaps more deserving of this description, even so early in the proceedings.

Man of the match: Mehdi Taouil (Kilmarnock)

It perhaps summed up Hibs' day when a Moroccan was star man – just not one of theirs. Taouil grew into the match and provided a ragged encounter with some flair.

It looks like, after telling 9 players that they won't play for Hibs again, that some of the rest dont want to play for him.

If Mixus right then the lazy players have to be got rid of. There is no excuse. They are playing for Hibs first and foremost.

There is something underlying going on at Easter Road.

Manager's telling half the squad they are not wanted, the half are lazy and players arguing on the field, all paint a fairly dismal picture.

All the signs of imminent disaster, which is wonderful after all the nonsense we have had to put up with over last season in particular with all the usual "flair" guff. Bottom line is you have a manager with no pedigree whatsoever (even as a player he was somewhat limited, if not enthusiastic shall we say) and a squad with very limited ability and it also seems application. As a Jambo I really don't want you relegated, as Edinburgh needs its 2 teams in the Premierleague, but unless some drastic action is taken you could be in BIG bother imo.

AS a Hibee i am like you i don't want to see either of our teams relegated, to be honest i don't think your lot are better of than ours...

I watched the old firm games over the weekend also and there is not much flair anywhere in the contry that i could see, if Falkirk could score a goal they would have won, if the ref was honest at parkhead it would have been a draw

I've sought him there (Hearts threads) so I thought I would seek him here but still can't find him. Scarlet Pimple, come out, come out wherever you are!!! First post on a Hobo story and I feel so dirty!

As a Hearts man who watched the highlight of the game, I think it's to early to write Hibs off.
They should have won that game.
The danger comes in confidence evaporating, and that's where a good manager earns his crust.
LEt's remember ( at both ends of the city) that we've just played 90 minutes of the season.
that said, I am looking forward to the Derby!

I agree I think Hibs are just having a bad start but I am 100% sure they will come back from it! I hope they do because the first derby will be electric something that has been missing for a while!

Hibs 1- Hearts 3 (First derby)

Seems to me the Fat Finn has lost the plot...

"8 or 9 players will be leaving"......then some are lazy.... At this rate Hibs will only have 2 players left (I hope the are McNeil & Macalamaty)

The way he keeps blaming people for his shortcomings is amazing.....Either that or the board have fleeced the support once more by going for the cheap option once again!!!!

A manager who can unite the team and get them playing dosen't have to be costly or indeed a household name - just someone who has served his apprenticeship and knows about football.....just look across the city for proof.....Csaba was still at the Hearts academy until 10.00pm on Friday watching DVD's on Mortherwell..

That's what a manager does - and not blaming everyone & everything....

Who's next boy's Ali Brasil...Micky Weir...

Good to see Killie have added some physical presence to the team at last. A strong performance from the lads.

It augurs well for the 4th best team in SPL history to get back to the top six where they belong.

I agree. Hibs have had a bad start but its far far to early to write them off. Even if they lose or draw the next few games they'll still be up for the Derby game.

Sacre bleu - the lack of comments today shows the dismay and apathy amongst even the most hardened hibees. Seriously bad situation that requires addressing tout suite nes pas? - and that applies at easter road too!

Who's it gonna be? ,

It's bad, but hardly a 'crisis' or 'disaster'. It's 1-0 defeat away at a fairly well organized Kilmarnock on the first day of the season.
I like the fact that Shiels had a go at Fletch. It means they are frustrated and being frustrated means that they expect more of each other. When everyone starts to click there should hopefully be a more cohesive unit that may not be great to watch but will concentrate for 90 minutes and work hard for a result.
I have to say that Nish was gash and should have been hooked at half time. Still worried about McNeil at corners not to mention free kicks/pass backs/shots/throw ins/goal kicks/punches and penalties.

O'Brian still has to learn how to play football. Ie dribbling, going around players not to mention passing although he was not the only guilty party there.

Thicot was missed when subbed.

Come on Hibs.

Well, I dont know any Hibees that were suprised by this result. It looks like it is going to be a very long season.

Still never mind, we have a fantastic balance sheet.

#3 Robert, I think that we can savely say that none of the 2 sides have a manager with any degree of pedigree, and as a limited player he did not too bad for himself playing at Dundee UTD, Aberdeen and Bolton.
Hearts had a good win on saturday, Hibs lost to killie where they don't have a very good record, it's too early to judge after one game.
The sad thing for me is that both the ugly sisters aren't that good so it's shows how poor the rest of the teams are

It seems that the fans are being driven by the press these days.....when did we ever expect really good games of football at the start of the season? Expectations are very high for this time of year. It's too early to judge most teams right now, but what we do know for sure is that Colin Nish is not the striker Hibs are looking for and he will never gel with Fletcher. Riordin is the answer. I am not sure that Hearts have any more or less skill than Hibs right now, but they showed passion atthe weekend....something we lacked. Hearts should also remember that a new manager best motivates his players during the honeymoon period.....like Mixu last year. The telling period is after the first 3 or 4 months.
Let's not judge prematurely.

Indigo Nightlight,

If I were a Hibs fan, the most worrying aspect would be Mixu. As Pattullo pointed out, he's spent all close-season saying judge it on the competitive games, which is fair enough, but he's never given any indication he knew how to sort it out. To be attacking your players after 1 game suggests fundamental issues with the relationship.

I'm far from convinced he has what it takes to turn it around and I'll be surprised if he see teh turn of the year as Hibs manager.

#16 - spot on.. i was waiting for the relief when i could leave the pre season results behind us, instead i am worried.. yes it's only 1 game but were home to what looked a decent falkirk side next week, what happens if we lose that? we have to head to inverness where we have never won the week after.. i know the season isn't 3 games long but after the pre season i was assured mixu would of had no excuses for a bad result - i mean what team do you know that have lazy players on the opening game of the season?

thicot is now out for weeks, we can't score and from Saturday's reports we lost out on a loan deal for riordan.. the small amount of ambition has rapidly gone in my eyes..

plus if killie were to be relegated, do you think anyone would notice? under 5000 home fans for the first game of the season..

#14 - First of all safely is spelt with an "f". In terms of Mixu I really don't care who he played for (by Hibs, Aberdeen, Dundee Utd, Bolton and Cowndenbeath do not indicate world class status in anyone's language) he was totally one dimensional in his game and no one who knows anything about football could disagree with that. In terms of managerial experience he is some way behind the Jambo Man as well - please check your facts and your spellling (sic) in the future before you come on here spouting nonsense - thanks very much
19

John south of Soutra,

11/08/2008 16:50:55
#18 I suppose you have never made any spelling mistakes when you have been typing, where is Cowndenbeath - obviously Mr Perfect - not.As for your comparisons between the 2 managers what is the Hearts' mans claim to fame - that wee Robbo kicked him during a European match, please explain what his pedigree is. I never said that Mixu was world class, all I said was that he had a decent career as a player, you'll probably find that his playing career was better than the Lazbo's.
I find it strange that after 1 game you Hearts fans seem to think that everything in the garden is rosy and that you have attracted the new messiah, if he is so good, how come he was only managing Uganda.
But if these points are nonsense
