HIBERNIAN manager John Hughes has bolstered his squad further by signing midfielder Kevin McBride. The 28-year-old becomes the latest former Falkirk player to join forces with his old manager at Easter Road following the capture of Patrick Cregg.
Hughes believes Hibs fans will see the best of a player who made more than 50 appearances for Falkirk before becoming a free agent in the summer.

He said: "Kevin is enthusiastic, always available for training and games and still has his best year
s ahead of him. He's one of the bravest boys on the ball, and is not to be messed with on the park. He had a good grounding at Celtic as a youth, and his ability to link defence to midfield is second to none. He's straight into training today and looking forward to pre-season."

McBride began his career at Parkhead and had spells at Motherwell and Darlington before returning to Scotland to join Hughes at Falkirk in January 2008. He is now relishing the opportunity to work under his former boss once again.

He told the club's official website, www.hibernianfc.co.uk: "I have always been a great admirer of the way Hibernian aim to play the game and I can't wait to get started as a Hibernian player.

"The manager has certainly never hidden his own high regard for this club. Now I'm just delighted to be here – I've already had a look at the training facilities and they are absolutely amazing."

Meanwhile, released winger Alan O'Brien last night insisted he bears no hard feelings towards Hughes after revealing his Easter Road exit was sealed months ago.

The left-sided 24-year-old had the last year of his contract terminated by mutual consent on Wednesday after failing to make the impact hoped for under ex-managers John Collins and Mixu Paatelainen. O'Brien – signed from Newcastle in 2007 – is thought to already be in talks with Swindon Town.

O'Brien said: "This was sorted before John came in. My mind was made up before we came back. It was nothing to do with him. I wanted to go. It's been on-going for a couple of months now and we managed to sort out an agreement between me and the club."

"I thought long and hard about trying to prove myself to a new manager but I made my decision. I've seen John briefly as I've been in training to keep my fitness up but I felt I'd be better off away. A few other things came into my decision as well. I think it's suited the club, too, letting them bring in other players."

Hughes has quickly signed midfield duo Cregg and McBride and Manchester United youngster Daniel Galbraith, who plays on the left.

O'Brien feels he won't be missed and the Dubliner added: "Even when I played at Hibs I felt I didn't play as well as I can. I've not proved myself up here. It was like a roller-coaster for me, up and down. I just felt it was time for me to move on. I'd love to go back down to England. I think the style there suits me better."

Strange to be headlining the same story 2 days in a row as if it were breaking news. Would have been better to have headlined with 'Alan O'Brien Exit Planned For Months - Shock!'

"I'd love to go back down to England. I think the style there suits me better."

Do they need wingers who can't cross the ball with either foot down there?

""I thought long and hard about trying to prove myself to a new manager but I made my decision."

And what an honorable one as well, thats the best thing you have done for the club since you got here!
Proving yourself to Yogi would have been pretty embarrassing for you both I would have thought, but then again Yogi would have already known you where tripe in every department.

"I've not proved myself up here" Yes you have, you where tried and judged to be a proven idiot!

JH says ""Kevin is enthusiastic, always available for training and games". I would think that that would be the very least we would expect. I would hate to think that we're getting in the way of his social life.

I'm not sure that this is a great signing for us, but I'll hold judgement until we see him in action.

However, I hope this is the end of reuniting "The Old Gang". Managers bringing in their old club's player always seems a little insecure to me. They may be cheap, but the question is whether they improve the quality we already have.

We have a very good squad, especially after now removing some of the chaff, and also some promising youngsters bursting through. The only problem last season was that the manager was clearly unavailable to formulate a game plan. JH's appointment has hopefully now rectified that problem.

I hope we might add one or two known quality players, but with Zuma, Benji and McCann coming back that should be more than enough.

#3 Very true, I thought that was a little odd myself to say about a player!

Cant say im thrilled after Cregg and now McBride who at 28 is hardly likely to offer anything new or even improve much as a player. Would much rather have had Mallo, Barr and Arfield if we're going to raid Falkirk or spend the extra cash on getting Boozy back.

Hughes now needs to bring in a goalkeeper but above all, as other posters have said, get what is actually a pretty good squad by SPL standards organised and ready for the start of the season and we should be on for a vast improvement on last year but it would be nice to see 1 or 2 more new faces in the door to give the fans a little lift after lossing Fletcher.

As much as I admired Boozy, I am afraid I for one would not welcome him back readily, he seemed to loose interest in his last season, did not have the passion for it any more at Hibs, wanted the money and left, if he was signed for nowt, on a contract until he retires then maybe we would see the old Boozy back, not the one that left us, disinterested, or had the thought of his impending move and that may have affected his last season with us, he still has a lot left in his bag but unless fully committed to us I am not interested in him.

#2 On what basis is AOB an "idiot?" He has failed to make the grade at ER, admits the fact he's not been good enough, and agrees to cancel his contract and move on. You pretended to suggest he made an "honourable" decision, which I think is bang-on, but to call him an idiot is bang out of order. The guy just wasn't good enough, so why can't you separate his lack of skill from his overall character/intelligence?

The Hobos have "a very good squad"... oh ma sides.

Anyone who is worth anything is sold on, to keep Miser Petrie and Sir Tom of Farmer in the black.

As usual the Hobos are trawling around looking for cheap rejects and cast-offs, but what is they say, pay peanuts get monkeys?

Still no goalie and Jones will be away soon, flogged to whoever will pay a few hundred grand.

Meanwhile Europa Cup nights at Tyencastle and a few more new players for the JTs!

What? Cast offs like the big dumpling Warren Feeney? Like the other third rate players you quote on the Hearts thread. Incidently, they all appear to be FREE TRANSFERS? What happened to the WARCHEST??????

YA DUNCE!!!!!

I thought the John Hughes was the messiah for recognising the problems at Hibs straight away - but no apparently O'Brien wanted out for some time. That must be about 50 inaccurate posts yesterday then.

#7 that'll be Europa League 4th Qualifying Round night (note, not plural).
If you think your lot will be able to live with the quality sides that will be seeded in that qualifying round then you're a bigger fool that I thought.

#10 still would beat getting put out the inter toto qualifying round - and if we go out to valencia or everton or lazio then no real disgrace in that - will get to see them plat ay tynie and get a wee jaunt.

could be alot worse...could have no european games.

hibs are done now theres no inter-toto, but even then it was one game (note - NOT plural!!!) going out to a bunch of part timers......

Have to say, if i was a Hibs fan i'd be worried about Hughes bringing in some of the "Stars" who took Falkirk to 2nd bottom last year. Hope for your sake he gets to invest some of Fletcher money on a better standard than that!
