Paatelainen drops heavy hint he would love to see Riordan return

Published Date: 29 August 2008
HIBERNIAN manager Mixu Paatelainen yesterday gave his strongest indication yet that he wants to bring former team-mate and fans' favourite Derek Riordan back to Easter Road.
The Celtic striker has been ostracised by manager Gordon Strachan and made to train with the youths after a public falling-out between the pair last season, and Riordan has been informed he has no future with the SPL champions.

However, the 25-yea
r-old has a year remaining on the contract he penned in moving to Glasgow from boyhood heroes Hibs a little over two years ago and this has so far proved a stumbling block in potential moves away from Parkhead

Owen Coyle's Burnley were reported to have had a £400,000 bid turned down for the former Scotland international in January, with Celtic said to be seeking a substantial transfer fee for a player who has started just 13 games for them in more than two seasons.

Riordan's agent, Jim McArthur, yesterday dismissed talk the player was ready to cross the Edinburgh football divide and join Hearts and indicated that, with suitors so far offering only loan deals, he expected his client to remain at Celtic beyond Monday's transfer deadline.

Hibs and Leeds United are understood to be the clubs keen to take the marksman on temporary contracts and, although Paatelainen refused to confirm or deny he had made such a move for his former colleague, he was willing to discuss the issue in some detail for the first time yesterday, when he also confirmed he now has money available in his search for a new striker.

"I like Deek, he is a fantastic footballer, and he is a goalscorer who did very well for Hibs when he was here," stressed the Finn.

"He is a Hibs fan, everybody knows that, but he is a Celtic player at this moment in time, so I can't really go too much into that. But I like goalscorers, every manager likes goalscorers.

"We are hoping to strengthen the strikers' department, so we want to make sure that whoever comes in is the right one. There are funds to bring in players, whether it's Riordan or somebody else we will have to wait to see."

Paatelainen will be keenly aware of Riordan's off-field image as a troublemaker, with reports circulating this week of him being banned for two years from every nightclub in the capital.

However, he clearly feels the man who netted 64 goals in 146 appearances for Hibs first time round could be the answer to his team's current profligacy in front of goal.

One of the guilty parties so far this season is Steven Fletcher, a major culprit as the Easter Road side exited the Co-operative Insurance Cup to First Division strugglers Morton on Tuesday night.

The 21-year-old suffered another blow to his early-season confidence when he was demoted to the Scotland Under-21s for the forthcoming internationals after being included in the last three squads picked by George Burley for the full team.

However, Paatelainen, who believes his star striker is ready to play at the top level for his nation, insists the youngster's overall play means he is not overly concerned by Fletcher's goalless opening to the campaign.

"It's not a worry that Steven Fletcher hasn't clicked yet," he said. "I would rather have him scoring now but the goals will come for him.

"He's working so hard and that's something we highlighted from Tuesday night. What a tremendous game he had, his movement and work rate, and getting into the positions to score goal were excellent.

"I think he needs a tap-in and hopefully then the ketchup bottle opens.

"He is a finisher, there's no question about that. In training he finishes regularly and at the moment it's just not happening for him. But we have spoken to Fletch and it will come."

Will he be any better a player than when he left? He can't have much match fitness and training with youngsters as opposed to a first team squad won't have done him any favours.

If we sign him, when will we see him playing for the first team? Will he have to spend a couple of months playing for the reserves to get the sharpness and fitness back?

Here is the link to the BBC Sport Predictor:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/sportscotland/predictor/

I have set-up a minileague for all posters on here willing to join.

It’s just a bit of fun and it starts with next weekend’s SPL fixtures.

All you need to do is go to the link and create your own membership. Try and make your user id as close to the one you use on here, so we all know who you are.

NB. If you are already registered and have points on the board, please re-register with a slightly different user id for this minileague, so that everyone starts on ZERO points.
Anyone joining with points already accrued will be removed.

Once you’re in, select “My Minileagues” and enter . . .

The Scotsman Forum

. . . as the minileague name.

The password is . . .

thescotsman

Once you have joined the minileague, you can start making your predictions. You get 1 point for a correct result and 3 points for a correct score. After each set of fixtures you can check the minileague table to see where you are and who is on top etc.

Enjoy it. It’s just a bit of fun.

Two comments to make:

1) Celtic will shoot themselves in the foot if they persist in playing hard to deal with. Firstly, considering the way that they have treated Riordan I would not be surprised if he digs his heels in and sits out his contract, taking the money.

2) If they turn down a transfer fee of any reasonable amount, they will lose that and will be stuck with paying wages till the end of August 2009. Probably at least another £400,000.

The other possible scenario is that, while Paatelainen makes noises about what a good player he is, they actually have another striker in mind and will sign him soon. Let's see what happens but the intrigue is interesting.

In March 2007, Hibernian reserves, filled mainly with players from the under 19 squad hammered Rangers reserves 5 -1 at Almondvale. So, while you my feel qualified to comment on the training and coaching that Hibs (all levels) receive, maybe you can now comment on what does or does not happen at Murray Park!

Interesting result tonight from Sweden:

Elfsberg 1 - 2 St Patricks

Two goals in the last four minutes ensured St Patrick's advanced into the knockout stages after a 2-1 win completed a 4-3 aggregate victory over IF Elsborg, who beat Hibs in the Intertoto Cup. The sides drew 2-2 two weeks ago in Sweden with St Patrick's coming back from two goals down to claim the vital away goals and the upper hand in the second qualifying round tie. However, it was the visitors who took the lead at Richmond Park midway through the second half through Stefan Ishizaki and were on the brink of progressing until Jason Gavin scored four minutes from time to level the score on the night.

The goal turned the tie on its head with the Irish now in pole position courtesy of their superior away goals and qualification was assured when Mark Quigley scored in the final minute to secure a 4-3 win.

An pointless forecast as such a game will not happen.

But you don't deny the result in March do you? The much vaulted Rangers reserve players were left red faced long before the end chasing shadows.

If the Rangers youth system is so good, how many of them reach the first team? Very few. Currently McGregor and sometimes Adam who is booed on and off the pitch by the appreciative Rangers fans.

The tic were offered 400k for Deeks in the last transfer window, and they turned it down.

Deeks as far as we have heard publicly did nothing to upset the apple cart at Parkhead, much like Gow signing for the Gers on his Bosman.

If I were either one of these players I would train with the reserves and sign a Bosman deal come January (only Deeks can do it this season)

8k a week is a lot to walk away from and players should look after their own interests, as we in the public sector would also do.

I'v only eve heard of 3 of these players, alan hutton, chris burke and john fleck.

Stephen Whittacker
Scott Brown
Kevin Thomson
Derek Riordan
Garry O'Connor
Ian Murray
Kenny Miller
Tam McManus
Stephen Dobbie
Paul Hanlon
Ross Chisholm
Kevin McCann
Ross Campbell
Sean Lynch
Jamie Mclusky
Darren McCormack
Lewis Stevenson
Andy Mcneil
Damon Gray

these are off the top of my head...

Have all came through the hibs youth ranks in the last 4-5 years, and played for the first team. The Training academy was only opened about 6 months ago.

When more than 3 of your youth players make it into the first team, you can argue about your wonderful youth teams and state of the art murray park. Until then just wheesht eh?

I think Murray came a wee bit before 5 years ago.

Hibs have had a decent youth system over the years, but with the demands of success at the OF clubs you must admit it is tougher for a young lad to break through into the first 11.

Provincial clubs will allow a young players to develop,, thus the transfer fees received for the players who are allowed to improve and gain 1st team experience,,

Without the pressure of winning titles and cups which comes as a player with the OF.

I have been told Riordan will be a Hibs player by Monday.

Also still a slim chance that Niemi will sign but I somehow doubt this one.

Anyway it will be great to have Deeks back scoring for the cabbage.

Bottom line with Riordan is that he has failed to show any sort of form in the chances he has had in the first team.

Granted his goalscoring record isn't too bad, but his general performances haven't merited the run in the team that he and many others feel he is due. His attack on the manager at his lowest ebb didn't reflect too well on him either. There was only ever gonna be one winner in that fight....which is the way it has to be.

It doesn't just follow cos you have a decent scoring record you are a good player. Next people will be saying Big Boydie is some player!

Might turn out better for him back at the Hibbes.

There are not that many places that an odious, racist, ned like Riorden would be welcomed - but I guess that his natural home is among his 'ain folk'. Well done to Strachan for giving him a lesson that no court in the land could do. His sentence has nearly been served - but has he been re-habilitated? Latest news would suggest otherwise.

CHUCKY,

I hope we get rid of Riordan, hopefully to Leeds.

As for that list of Rangers players who have 'made' the first team, I think Hutton is about the only one you could consider to be a 'success'.

Although, how he went for the supposed fee that was touted i'll never know.

The Rangers fans were booing him for a season, then he had a purple patch and he was forced out the door to keep the bankers away, strange all round really.

#11 NO - Irish Soccer is a summer game now, so when the European qualifiers begin, all teams are match fit and have been playing for half a season. Hence results are better. Crowds are also up since Ireland went to summer. Lesson there maybe?

33 - normal progression is youth team - reserve team - first team.

Celtic have win the reserve league 6 times on the spin.

Seems to be a disconnect between the success ReaRangers have at youth level and the reserves. Maybe they are pushed too hard at youth level as effectively they are recruited and trained to be sold to finance Murrays debt. Remember ReaRangers youth players aren't owned by the football club.

Compare with Celtic first team. 3 league successes on the spin, 2 of the last 3 players POTY (forget the journalists one - they vote for who they are told to vote for) are Maloney and McGeady. Both were young players and players of the year....product of which youth system?

Celtic are captained by Stephen McManus who is now a full internationalist....product of which youth system?

We welcome your bluster!

David Murray famously said that if Murray Park produced one youngster each season who was able to take a place in the first team squad, and thus save Rangers from a trip into the transfer market, then it would more than pay for itself. Clearly, the Hutton sale, if you want to factor it in, means that Murray Park has been a real financial asset to RFC.

The youth system yielded excellent results in the first couple of seasons after Murray Park was up and running, with McGregor, Hutton, Smith, Burke, Adam and also Ross McCormack breaking through, but WS admitted when he came back that the system needed an overhaul and that it wasn't enough merely to have the facilities.

The signs have been very encouraging since then, with the Rangers Youth team winning back to back League and Cup doubles, and dominating that particular aspect of Scottish football. RFC have now revamped their reserve system, which was previously a fairly aimless format for giving match practice to first team squad players who either couldn't get selected for the first team or were returning from injury. This season, RFC have put an Under-20 squad in place for the Reserve league, and this will be our first chance to see whether some of the players who have dominated at Youth level can make a small step up and replicate that success, hopefully en-route to first-teeam football.

Personally, I get the feeling that the nurturing and development of talented young players at RFC is going very well, but time will tell.

Survivor Of Riots,

BE - The ethos of a youth system (for me as a might Celtic man anyway) is to produce players to enhance and improve the 1st team.

If a player comes through the ranks and decides to move on to the EPL/La Liga etc, in the days of the Bosman Rule, there is nout anyone can do to stop them.

However, "nurturing" talent should be inclusive of a period of time when the player provides sterling service to the 1st team.

None of your list of players have done this long term....and none of them will in future.

As soon as a bid comes in, by Mintys ethos of the youth system, they are punted.

You can include in this ethos, the signing of players with a view to increase their value.

He hit the jackpot with Boumsong and Cuellar and sold them on.

However...despite selling Hutton, Boumsong and Cuellar (the highest profiles in Mintys Ethos), Celtic have 1 6 out of 8 league titles and continue to post a better set of financial results.

Mibbes Mintys ethos is not beneficial to the club after all?

Mibbes the media will ask him questions on the selling of these players?

Mibbes I'll lay a golden egg!!

McGregor has been a success, as was Stevie Smith prior to his injury problems, as was Hutton (and that was simply a fee that couldn't be turned down, quite frankly). All three of those players would be in my starting XI if they were available and fit. I also think McCormack was a real talent, but PLG saw fit to move him on.

6 out of 8 titles? A good statistic. Yet, if RFC hadn't ran hopelessly out of steam towards the end of last season, it would have been 3 titles each out of the last 6, so stats can always be slanted to paint a picture.
34

BEMUSED EXILE,

Totally agree, James.

My point is that statistics seldom paint a full picture.

Celtic have been the financially stronger team in the seven seasons since Advocaat left after spending a fortune, and leaving RFC unable to compete on the same terms.

However, in that seven season period, Rangers and Celtic have both won 9 major domestic trophies, competed in a UEFA Cup Final, and had a best performance of Last 16 in the CL.

Yet another slanted statistic!

You're looking for trouble where none exists, my friend.

I'm fully aware that the winning of the league is a far bigger deal than winning either domestic cup. That's why I ended my post with "yet another slanted statistic" - it wasn't meant to be taken seriously.

Your reputation as a fearsome debater goes before you, but you just need to lighten up a wee bit :)

James.

We've had similar conversations before, reference the finale to last season's SPL. I was able to find pleasure in what we'd achieved, rather than concerning myself over what was missed.

I am able to see the bigger picture. Shaun is a talented lad who could have done a job at Ibrox, and if he gets first team football at CP, it is hopefully to the benefit of our National team.

If he scores the winner on Sunday, that will be much to my chagrin, of course. However, I'm not too upset over RFC missing out because I'm quite impressed with the signings of Mendes, Edu, Davis and Aaron, who all promise to bring something a wee bit different to the party, and who represent quite a departure from the normal "solid and reliable" signing policy of WS.

As for Sunday, I hope that RFC have a wee bit more of a "go" than normal, and I think that it could be an open and entertaining match.

Fairly decent draw for the CL, should see the tic again challenge for the last 16.

Will we ever see you're team win away in the CL, this group should give the best chance to put a smile on the faces of the travelling support. (Man Utd aside)

Anyway best of luck in Europe, I hope for an extended run for you in the UEFA Cup after you're CL group games.
