Published Date: 02 September 2008
HIBERNIAN invested around £500,000 in a flurry of deadline-beating transfer activity yesterday which was completed by securing the return of Derek Riordan from Celtic.
The 25-year-old striker has signed a three-year deal, bringing to an end two unhappy seasons at Parkhead following his £170,000 transfer from Easter Road two years ago.

Hearts were also interested in Riordan, but it is understood the Tynecastle club were more interested in a loan deal than a purchase, and Hibs secured the player's services with a solid bid.

Riordan, who made 32 appearances for Celtic, scoring eight goals, said on Celtic's website: "I would like to thank Celtic and the supporters for the opportunity to have played for the club, but I am looking forward to this move and to the future with Hibs."

Riordan failed to earn a regular first-team place with Celtic and publicly vented his frustration earlier this year.

He returns to the club he has always supported, and where he spent six years as a player. He made his professional debut in 2001 and went on to finish as the club's top scorer for three straight seasons until 2005.

Riordan will be officially unveiled by Hibs this afternoon but manager Mixu Paatelainen, a former team-mate of the marksman, was in no doubt of the significance of his latest signing.

He said: "I'm absolutely delighted. He's a goal scorer, first and foremost, and he did tremendously well when he was previously at the club.

"He likes scoring goals and he also brings us quality in terms of his deliveries from set pieces.

"He broke into the Hibs first-team when I was in my last years and everybody realised how good technically he was and how good a striker of the ball he was. He had quite an unpleasant stay at Celtic but that is now over and he comes to Hibs.

"I don't think it's about showing people anything. I'm sure he is just relishing the chance to come to Hibs and play again and do what he does best. It's not a matter of proving people wrong.

"He's now with Hibs and I'm sure he is delighted. That's what he's telling me and you can see it in his face.

"He feels strongly about the club and I'm sure all the Hibs fans will welcome him back."

The move is set to give the club a lift following a poor start to the season in which they have won only one of their five matches, largely thanks to a failure to take chances in front of goal.

The Easter Road side also brought in centre-back Sol Bamba from Dunfermline Athletic, and released defender Martin Canning and midfielder Brian Kerr.

Ivory Coast international Bamba has signed a three-year contract. The 23-year-old, a powerful 6'3" central defender joins Hibernian after having spent the last two years with Dunfermline Athletic where he made over 50 first team appearances. He recently returned from representing his country at the Olympics in Beijing.

Paatelainen said he was delighted to have acquired Bamba's services. "He is a player with tremendous pace and physical presence that will most definitely help bolster our defence.

"Sol has been a target for a number of clubs and I'm delighted that given the options open to him he has chosen to join Hibernian."

I had heard the defender cost the Hibs 75k.

What did they spend the other 425k on??

What did Deeks cost Hibs?

40k upfront and 30k at xmas is the deal for Sol with a 20% sell on clause, but from what i've heard he's Bomb 'Bamba' Scare...

Mal in Goal and Sol infront.... top class ha ha

you may have to score 3 or 4 to win a game this season!!

Big Walter loves Barry, once fit he's back in the team.

Time will tell about Riordan, if Tony Mowbray were still there then yes i'd say he'd knuckle down and play well, but unsure as to wether or not Mixu has enough control to get Riordan's mind on the game, thats why Strachan binned him Riordans attitude, so have Hibs bought themselves a problem or is he really going to perform for Hibs??

Great news. Exactly the commitment and ambition that the hibs board needed to show for this season. Signing Deeks should supply goals. Not sure about this defender boy though but at least Canning is gone and Kerr has been booted through the door. These were 2 extremely poor players and well done to mixu for knowing that Canning was a mistake and promptly disposing of him.

'Wage structure' nonsense is obviously a hertz wet dream now with deeks earning more than the rest.

A sizable squad now with cover in most positions but it would be nice to have signed a decent keeper and another fullback or wide defender to cover Jones.

Lets hope this will give the boost needed to spur the team on and Mixu can start to concentrate on the squad instead of worrying about transfers and deadlines.

Was told well over a week ago that this was going to happen, and posted it would definately happen at the same time but the move slowed due to discussions over the fee, Derek was always keen to come.

The longer these thing drag on the more doubts creep in and admit started to fear it may not happen in the end. Was never worried he would end up at Hearts as he cannot stand them but he may have just sat it out at Celtic for another season which would have been a great waste of his talent.

Anyway delighted to see him back he will not be the answer to all our problems but will certainly help, big time. Also think he may need a few months to get back up to speed but the prospect of Riordan & Fletcher on form up front is a mouth watering one and I'm sure Hearts fans must be jealous considering the options they have up front.

#5 you have been listening to Alan Preston and what he knows about football can be written on the back of a postage stamp.

Hearts were never in for Riordan on a permanent deal, they cannot afford a transfer fee at present. They wanted a loan deal and there is only one club in the city who could afford a fee, and they got him. Times are a changing in the Capital.

Hibs now without a shadow of doubt have one of the best strike forces in the country and if anyone tries to deny this, then they know less than Preston and that is saying something. Can't wait until the next window as I suspect there is another surprise for Hibs fans.

GGTTH Welcome Home DEEK

Kudos to you, bud - you called it. A bit of squeaky bum time towards the end though?

I am a bit confused, mind. Apparently he could only go to Hearts because we could never afford his wages. Did I miss something? Or were the Jambos just talking mince?

Good luck Deek. Heid doon and start banging them in.

Ok so you signed deeks! well done hibs he is a quality player & yes of course he choose his own boyhood team! hearts did not stand a chance because he took a big pay cut to join hibs which left it a horse race from the start!

I can see why hibs are delighted & you are entitled to that but for god sake come back to reality & understand that one player will not make much of a difference. He will be playing with a very poor side! every Jambo I know inc me did not want deek & if you look at all the comments by jambos over the week you will see that.

Well done again Hibs & lets hope that the Edinburgh derbys will go back to the way they used to because they went very dry over the last couple of seasons

Riordan done a god job for Hibs before and expect he will again one he has a few matches under his belt. However I think at the time they must have been desperate for the cash as he was worth a lot more than £170000. Good business by Celtic some may say it is good business, to me it is despicable and what to expect from old firm. Buy a player on the cheap, weaken the selling team, try to ruin his career and ask for more money to sell him back. Hibs paid more money as they believe he can still a good job for him. When Fletcher does go I hope he is not sold out west.

As for the Jambos I am disappointed we didn't get some one in, but we have spent a lot of money on duds on transfer fees in the past. Beslija and Makela to name two.

# 25, Nice! lol

Agreed that he was a good goal scorer, and I would have taken him at Hearts, hoowever, as has been said he is a risk due to the baggage and attitude he brings, could turn out to be an excellent bit of business by Hibs, or could turn out quite sour, think it depends how much he has grown up whilst playing in Celtic reserves, time will tell...........

Well done Hibs on getting the prodical son back - lets hope he can steer clear of the bad company he keeps....

I never thought he would end up at Hearts - the fans would have gave him 5 minutes then been on his back...

Has more potential than Fletcher without a doubt...but that is all it is...

But I hope he does come good - The Scottish national team is crying out for this type of player - galius!!!!

Well I hope he comes good - apart from when he plays Hearts

I agree I thought we would have brought in a striker! surely Vlad knew that Derek would only go to Hibs. I no people who know Derek & they said he would never come to hearts. You can understand that I would never wear a Hibs jersey for all the money in the world

Well said Wookie good to see some level headed comments from a Jambo for a change.

As I said earlier he will not be the answer to all our problems but will certainly help. He does come with baggage but is getting older & hopefully wiser now and I cannot see him being any trouble at Hibs. He has a lot to prove now and we should benefit from that. Looking forward to seeing him get his career back on track and banging in the goals for us once again. Of course a winner in the next Derby and he would be the messiah, the script is written.

Delighted the deal has gone thru'.

I don't think there's any doubt that Derek would never have signed for Hearts but the fact that they could not afford to pay a fee would have meant Celtic would not have let him go there anyway.

Are jambos not more than a little disapointed with your "managers" transfer business this window?

Of course your going to get a lot of Jambo fans that are bitter thats only because Hearts have doen nothing to strengthen the weakness which is up front!

Hibs have done really well this transfer window probs the best I have seen in a long time! I am just gutted that hearts went dead about 7pm last night. As I said before I really want those fantastic derby games back

35

Chas Niceass,

02/09/2008 08:59:22
Alex 123, I was looking for a striker to come in also.
I dont think Derek would have been a Csaba signing, a gift from Vlad.
I believe though any signing would be detrimental to the development to the likes of Glen.
I was also disappointed that a few didnt take a walk out of Tynecastle last night, perhaps a few will go in the next window.
We are top heavy at the minute, even in the striking dept, only problem we dont apparently have the 20 goal a season man, except for possibly Glen but he's still raw and so far it appears Csaba may be reluctant to throw him in.
36

victorian of gorgie ,

02/09/2008 09:03:43
not going to deny that i was among the minority that did want him at hearts because i did. i thought it was worth the gamble, in the end there was no gamble to be made.

in the end it will turn out for the best for us because he has shown exactly the calibre of 'man' he is by opting for hibs. he didn't have the courage, ambition and professionalism in him to take the harder option which would have been better for him in a football sense and financially.

no, he's opted for the easy way to return to being a fan who happens to play for the team.

i am disappointed because i think he's a quality player. not disappointed to miss out on the player, disappointed the player turned out not to be the player i thought he might have been.

yer still pesh.

40

Chas Niceass,

#47 Csaba hasn't seen that though. He's playing a system at the moment that involves 3 attacking midfielders circling around a physical striker so I suppose it doesn't benefit GG.
4-4-2 might not come in a hurry with Driver, Obua and Kingston to be accomodated alongside the excellent Stewart. With a defensive midfielder to glue it all together maybe most of this season will be played out with 1 striker.

Well done to hoobs as they seem to have just secured a decent goalscorer, i also think that without hearts involvement he would have stayed put as i dont think hoobs would have upped the wage if it wasnt for the threat of their biggest rivals being involved. The only problem now for them is if DR and SF come onto good form then will petrie have the stamina to say no if decent offers come for them in january.

the other main issue is if he gets dragged down by those in his "social circle" again as he seems to be fairly easily led in that department and as i said last night he is only one fight away from being scotlands Joey Barton.

Screw the nut DR and you could have a fantastic international career ahead!!
46

Jambo-ree,

Relieved he's not coming our way - he comes with way too much baggage and it will be interesting to see how much a former team mate (Mixu) will get him to toe the line now he's manager. You can't score many goals if you're doing a custodial that's for sure.

Felt all along he was only using our 'interest' as a bargaining tool with Petrie. Just goes to show how desperate Petrie and Mixu must have been with recent events to open the purse strings like this. Give it a months or two then we'll see unrest in the ER dressing room about preferential treatment for the prodigal son. Can't believe Hibs paid £80k more than they got for him and have agreed to CFC getting a sell-on cut! That's real good business acumen there eh?

Anyway, we're third with the second highest number of goals for at the moment so ain't doing to bad on the goal scoring front as it is. I don;t give a stuff what position the goal scorers are occupying as long as they go in. How many did Hartley and Rudi contribute as non-strikers?

Another sterling peice of nonsense from the Hootsman over the last few days. I said from the start he would never be going to Tynie. If you listened to his agent, he said from the beginning up until the end of the transfer window, that Hearts had made no approach.
Fact is Hearts didn't want him and Riordan didn't want to go Hearts .
However its a good deal for Hibs and should make this year's Derby games more interesting.

Chas, Alex 123, Like you I am disappointed that we didn't sign a striker. We have two young lads, Mole and Glen who can't carry the load alone, plus Nade who has yet to prove himself and the unknown Tullberg. Meanwhile, two new keepers have been signed leaving the young lad as third choice, and Banks has been punted. Also we have more midfielders than you can shake a stick at, some who have played only a handful of games through being permanently injured, and others who are at best mediocre. I feel that an opportunity has been missed to have a massive clear out, reduce the wage bill, and bring in a couple of quality players.

He is a total no-mark of a manager, and the Vladman is already teaching Plan F about puppetry. This is a guy who is at the pinnacle of his career now, and will return to a £30K managers job in the very near future.

As for NED's, think Lee 'Marvin' Wallace. With his penchant for weapons and ammunition, you would think he would be good at shooting, but no.

Times are changing... there is now only one team in Edinurgh with the kind of solid financial base that will facilitate steady, ongoing investment in the team. Fully expect the Gunts to lurch from one crisis to the next this season, as usual.

Ok, mate, I just thought you're previous post was a bit on the naughty side.

I'm not big into this "I have a source" pash because most of the nonsense that these guys post under that heading is baws. However, I do have a source.........(!!!)

I'll not bother going into it, but it appears that several clubs were interested in Riordan, Hearts being one. Hibs put their deal on the table some days ago and the unwashed were fairly obstructive in the deal. It appears that they wanted him down south but the cash did not materialise. In the event, the only tangible offer on the table that they found acceptable was Hibs.

I don't think that you can therefore knock him for accepting the only offer which was effectively on the table for hin.

Bets of luck to Riordan. Shame, IMO, that he never applied himself properly when he had the chance at Celtic. Seems a bit sad that Deeks ambitions are about what pub or club he'd like to be in on a Saturday than what anything else he might be doing on a Saturday. No disrespect to Hibs, who are team with a good philosophy of attacking football, but Riordan could have plied his trade in bigger and better leagues than Scotland.

An early indication of Deeks...er ambition..was obvious when he declined the opportunities to head East to Moscow and Kiev. Perhaps he wasn't aware they have discos and pubs in these places too. Better looking birds as well.

#72 dood, very true mate, the level of interest and existence of firm offers can easily be over-egged by the media, perhaps as a result of clever agents.

maybe hearts made a firm offer, maybe they didn't. maybe riordan took a pay cut, maybe he didn't.

anyway, ratboy shmatboy, you've got him and we haven't.

As a Hibby, my first thought was that Moat St Jambo was seriously deluded re CL in sights. However, let's have a wee think about that before slagging him off too much. The ugly sisters are possibly splittable again this season. They've each looked vulnerable for the past couple but nobody's capitalised.

So, if a club can give it a serious go then everything's possible. The question is - who? Hertz? only if MadVlad doesn't interefere. Which is where it all goes horribly wrong.

So, Moat St J - not completely deluded, just too much faith in Vlad - again. Won't you lot ever learn?

Good to have him back but he needs to prove himself - even better that we have disposed of Kerr, Zibi, Canning, Zerabi, Donaldson, Noubissie.

The old lesson re-learned - very few players from Scottish clubs succeed with the OF. Just look at Scottie Brown - either his confidence is shot or Strachan is trying to teach him to play a "sophisticated" game. Either way, he is not the player he was at ER. Same could be said for Whittaker and Thomson at the other end of the city. And what has Killen done - is he even on a bench these days? Repent at leisure gents. If Iron Rod is willing to flex the pay deals, then at least one of these migrants might be persuaded to return

Anyway, great news after an awful start to the season

Dublin,

I agree with your comments re the O/F but do you now think that mixu will be able to control all of those loyal players who had been told that your club will not break the wage structure only for petrie to give in to the fans unrest and sign riordan with a wad of cash.

Hearts wanted him, Hearts didn't want him, the truth is there were a number of interested parties over the last few months, Hearts only wanted him on loan, Hibs wanted to buy him back, and it was always a stonewaller he would go to Hibs in any case. (if he was staying in Scotland that is)

"no, he's opted for the easy way to return to being a fan who happens to play for the team".

This is what used to be known as "LOYALTY" which most football fans (yourself included no doubt) constantly bemoan as lacking among current stars.

How fickle we can be1

All the Jambos on these threads are forgetting one simple fact. They have brought in nothing of consequence. Money a bit tight in the bank nowadays it would seem. As to their prospects over the season, well they will be physically strong as per usual but decreasing in the skill factor every year. Having watched Saturday's performance on telly last night I honestly wondered if some of Hamilton's players were indeed playing in the right strip. It was three points gifted not won in an enthraling way.
The present is debt. the near future is similar debt. The end game sadly oblivion.
When the price of land goes up as, it will Ukio Bankas will be out of there in a shot.
No bank gives away money and the monies involved here are not recoverable by playing football and it is not realistic to think it could or would happen
Bye.

Victoria of Gorgie normally has a degree of commonsense in his posts, but read #46 - "he has shown exactly the calibre of 'man' he is by opting for hibs. he didn't have the courage, ambition and professionalism in him to take the harder option which would have been better for him in a football sense and financially"
What amazing arrogance, and from someone who doesn't understand capital letters!
Then, implying some sort of background knowledge, he says "the FACT that he swithered over the offer from hearts to hold out for hibs tells us all we need to know.."
In the end, by #75 he admits "maybe hearts made a firm offer, maybe they didn't. maybe riordan took a pay cut, maybe he didn't."
So there we have it - the great know-all Victoria of Gorgie talks rubbish, gratuitously insults someone he has never met, makes statements of fact which have no basis, and then eventually admits he knows nothing.
Hibs have given out no details of any arrangement, neither has Celtic, and (at least until he gets drunk) neither has the boy himself.
ie all the comments here about the transfer fee, wages, sell-ons etc are complete nonsense.

#84 MTG. Yes! if we had any truly class players (Fletcher apart) then probably not. But we don't, so no problem.

Banter apart, I bear no ill feeling for Jam or any other Tarts (I'm not a native!)but I do believe that you are in rouble with the mad man. He is reputedly a business man - but there is no logic or business sense to his approach, decisions or interventions. We may have to repay the Wallace Mercer favour in months to come!!!

As you seem to have the whole thing sussed, care to venture an estimate for when we will reach 'oblivion' just so I don't miss it this time.

I appreciate comments like #92, made in good humour whilst still making the point about our debt situation, however, your post just comes across as ill informed and made by a bitter wee man. Happy to be proved wrong tho........

Good luck to Riordan at Hibs, but I am sorry he is not at Tynecastle where we could have done a good job for us. I am a bit gutted we didnt bring in at least one striker as it is we have no one worth calling a goal scorer. We spent half a million on a cart horse namely Nade, which would have bought Riordan twice times. I feel this is going to be our downfall the lack of a striker in the games to come.

#90 - Problem there is that even in the best of times Tynecastle was valued at between £20 - 24m. Even if these values come back relatively soon - and that is unlikely with the overhang of flats for sale - then Vlad will have to write off considerable debt (was it 38m last year?) to break even. Remember the Marr bros in Dundee thinking they could prosper on player sales? Plus ca change....

As I say, I don't understand the strategy, but then I don't understand why Russia invaded Georgia or why Abramovich throws his money at Chelsea, so what do I know

Welcome back Deek.

This is firmly in the "good news" box for Hibs.

All 7 summer signings look good, or able to do a job for us. 14 out the door so a slimmed-down squad, but competition in all key areas.

No all we need is Mixu to dispense with the diamond formation and it'll be happy days down ER.

You have to laugh at the "probabbly for the best he didn't come to Hearts as he has too much baggage" type comments.

Like anyone coming out of a ground after someone scores a hat-trick for their team will be talking about his character.

My question to Hibs fans and its a serious one. Would they have preferred a decent goalie or a midfielder.
I find it strange they have Nish and Fletcher and now they have Riordan.
Now Riordan can be played wide or Fletcher deeper, but really neithers best position.
He was available though, but thats as much as I can say.
Also worth remembering last time he was there, allied by Brown, Thomson, O'Connor, it may not be so easy this time, the squad isnt that strong any more.

I heard that the biggest stumbling block was that Celtic were insisting on a 40% cut of any future transfer fee,did Hibs agree to that or did Celtic relent?

What some people don't seem to understand is it is the bank that own HMFC not Vlad. That same bank has a duty to its shareholders first and foremost. Now I for one have no idea why any business would get involved with any football team to the extent that the investment is beyond by a long way anything that the club can generate through gate and merchandising. It makes no economic sense and bankers being bankers know when to call time. The bank now own the vast majority of the shares in the club so it really is in there hands.
Do not be deluded this debt is and will surely finish the club. The first step may already have been taken by the apparent lack of interest during the transfer window. I have no reason to wish the demise of HMFC but this situation is untenable as many accountants have stated. The clock has to be ticking.
