DESPITE Hibs manager Mixu Paatelainen recently laughing off the suggestion that Real Madrid are monitoring the progress of Easter Road striker Steven Fletcher, the Spanish club's chief scout has re-confirmed that the player has been identified as a signing target.
A report last week said that La Liga champions are ready to make a move for the 21-year-old full internationalist. Their interest was first reported earlier in the year, when chief scout Julen Lopetegui confirmed that the youngster was one of ten tar
gets that Real were monitoring across Europe.

Fletcher is understood to have come to the attention of the Spanish giants when he finished top scorer in the Under-19 European Championships qualifying campaign two years ago.

Now Real are set to consider all of their signing targets, and decide whether to pursue any of those identified by their scouting network, at a summit of leading officials including club president Ramon Calderon, sporting director Predrag Mijatovic and his assistant Miguel Angel Portugal, and manager Bernd Schuster.

At the weekend, Lopetegui said: "We have watched many young players this season and one is Fletcher, but the work of the scouts is now finished and the final decision lies with others."

Fletcher, who made his Scotland debut in a friendly against Croatia in March, is under contract with Hibs until 2013, and would command an attractive fee. If he was to join Real, it is expected that he would either be farmed out to another Spanish club to gain more experience, or would play for a second XI.

When quizzed about Real's interest last week, Paatelainen said: "I don't want to waste your time or mine talking about this because there is nothing to it. There has been no contact between Real Madrid and Hibs regarding Fletcher.

"This is not having a detrimental effect on him as I spoke to him earlier and he was laughing about it. He is just getting ready for the start of pre-season training with Hibs.

"There is nothing in the Real Madrid thing so why talk about things that are not there. It is all smoke in the air." Fletcher carried the responsibility of being the club's principle striker last term, and scored 14 goals, although his form dipped noticeably in the second half of the season. Paatelainen now faces an anxious wait to see if he can hang on to his most valuable asset.

Meanwhile, Hibs striker Abdessalam Benjelloun was on target for Morocco for the second successive week as they beat Mauritania 4-1 in Saturday's World Cup qualifier.

After netting in the 3-0 victory over Ethiopia last weekend, Benjelloun scored his country's second in the humbling of Mauritania in Nouakchott. Despite failing to make an impact under Paatelainen at Easter Road last term, Benjelloun has found his feet on the international stage.

Morocco now face a World Cup qualifying double header with Rwanda, playing away on 14 June before hosting their African counterparts a week later.

Falkirk face competition from clubs in the English Championship and the Netherlands in their bid to sign Sunderland midfielder Arnau Riera on a permanent deal.

Manager John Hughes is keen to lure the former Barcelona B captain back to the Westfield after he spent last season on loan at the SPL outfit. Despite having a year to run on his contract with the Barclays Premier League outfit, the 26-year-old is looking to quit the Stadium of Light as he is yet to make an appearance under manager Roy Keane.

However, Riera's agent Craig Honeyman admits Falkirk are not the only club tracking his client. He said: "Arnau is looking for a move and we hope that will be sooner rather than later.

"He thoroughly enjoyed his time with Falkirk, is very thankful to them for the opportunity last season and he has not ruled out the possibility of going back. Arnau is thinking over a few things but there is interest from the Championship and also in Holland."

St Johnstone and Falkirk could be heading for a compensation tribunal over midfielder Liam Craig's move.

The Bairns are entitled to a fee for the player even though Craig was a free agent when he recently signed a three-year deal with the Saints following last season's successful spell on loan from the SPL outfit.

Falkirk manager Hughes signed Craig, 21, from Ipswich in January 2006 and it is understood they are looking for a six-figure fee for a player that made 55 first-team appearances for the club.

St Johnstone managing director Stewart Duff admits the two clubs are far from reaching a compromise. He said: "We have been in discussions with Falkirk regarding Liam but at the moment we are far apart."

Mixu knows nothing? He didn't know Boozy was leaving. He didn't know Real Madrid were interested in Fletcher. He doesn't know if Benji will be here next season. He's a liar.

I knew Boozy was leaving at the end of the season. So did Mixu. I knew that Real had expressed an interest in Fletcher months ago. So did Mixu. I know that Benji has to stay at Easter Road if we have any ambition to be a decent team...unfortunately Mixu doesn't.

I think Hibs may not have their problems to seek with Mixu next year.

Many Hibs fans I know are not convinced and I think it would be fair to say that the jury is still out.

I recall John Robertson arguing with his opposing manager frequently when in charge of Hearts. Ferencvaros game at Murrayfield the most high profile example. Mixu has already had altercations with Walter Smith, Mark McGhee and Craig Levein. All of the aforementioned have stated Mixu's overly eager approach to see opposing players dismissed.

Might prove to be just too big a job for Mixu at this time. Only time will tell.

Falkirk keep Arnau Riera..Good Luck.

I think Mixu not Best Try keep Boozy. Keegan Ayre leave but Boozy not stay.

Yes, yes ,yes we all know that Fletcher has been watched by Real Madrid. Is there really any point in telling us again? To answer that rhetorical question, no...

I'd ike to hear something about Rob Jones and his future with Hibs, lots of folk on this site were saying he would be off for sure in the close season, but so far, not a peep out of anyone at ER about this... Not that i care massively cos as much as he saves us points and goals he helps them along too rather often...

I suspect they will wait and see how he does against Barca before they make a move. The maybe they will buy him for £4m and then loan him back to us for a season!

As said above: Jury still out on big Mixu even though I was for him coming back to the club.
Hope Sauzee does help him find a couple of decent players as we will toil in midfield this year. PNish and Canning are not inspiring players- more average squad playersis not what we need to take points off a decent DU and Motherwell.
Real might sign Fletch on a precontract but I think he will stay for another season. 4 million for a potential goal scorer in the top flight is peanuts though.
He would be daft to get rid of Benji- the amount of injuries picked up by the rest of the squad alone justifies this. Having 4 strikers is a must as at least 1 is going to be snookered for most of the season (if they have been trying hard enough- Benji)
Come on Mixu- get it together and show us what you can do- You have 1 season and 2 transfer windows to go as far as I am concerned so you better get cracking.

I would guess that Madrid will be putting ALL their efforts and cash into a bid for Ronaldo this summer, so this is probably why Hibs are laughing off the story.

Mixu released the statement about Sauzee helping him find players.. crowd pleaser if i ever seen one..

Theirs too much talk about the uncertainty over the players we have and not enough chat about getting players in.. i can see sauzee being the scapegoat again when it all goes wrong..

#8 - Riley Hamish,

The Master of free speech has spoken again. But what has he actually said? Nothing of any significance yet again.

Nice to see you on a Hibs thread though instead of the usual anti-Hearts ramblings we have come to expect from you.

Please remember this is a football forum. Clearly I am a Hearts supporter but I am not anti Hibs. I believe that a strong Edinburgh football presense is important as 6th and 8th respectively last season does not constitute anything to be proud of in my opinion.

You are the scurge of these forum's. You really must get a life or crawl back under the stone from which you came.

12# I'm a Hibs fan but don't encourage Riley,Hamish. There should be a universal understanding that when the like of he and Old Firm etc post everyone ignores them. That way they might get fed up and go back to "dooking for chips" or something.

Personally I am extremely disappointed at the consistent attacks on Mixu by the likes of Private Pike and other Hibs supporters. I can ignore those by Hearts fans posting on Hibs stories but Hibs fans must give Mixu a decent time frame to get it right. After the disaster left behind by Collins and Craig who then walked off when he (Collins) saw what a mess he had made of things, Mixu did a remarkable job motivationg a squad of relatively average players to climb back up the table and compete at top 6 level.

As regards signings to strengthen the squad, those rarely happen for any team in early June. Everybody connected with football is on holiday FFS so have a little patience. Also, relative to players coming in, we must also be patient re players going out. I am sure that Hibs are trying to offload more of the sub standard players that Collins and Craig signed, but these guys are on contracts and we may be stuck with them.

As for Benji, talented yes but if he does not have a consistent good attitude to play for Hibs as opposed to Morocco then he will be as musch use as a chocolate frying pan. If Anderlecht want to pay a good transfer fee then let him go and get somebody in who wants to give 100% every week.

GET OFF MIXU'S BACK I SAY. HE WILL GET US WINNING CONSISTANTLY.

Neutral. I bet your thoughts on sub-standard players do not include Rankin or Nish. I hope Mixu does well, obviously, but his team selections have me worried.

Last game of the season. Nothing to play for. well into the second half and we have lost the game. Time for a substitute. Benji and MacDonald on the bench. Bring on Rankin. Please explain to me, why he did that. I genuinely do not understand.

I personally do not think Mixu can cut it. That is why I'm on his back. That is why I'm one of those in whom you're disappointd. But nothing..and I repeat NOTHING, he has done to date has made me sit up and believe that at last we have someone who can guide us to a modicum of consistency, never mind success. For me the last half of the season just gone was an absolute shambles in all areas...team selection...discipline...performance...and sheer bl--dy painful to witness. A lot down to his predecessors, I agree, but he had enough time to convince me he could produce the goods and set some sort of standard..but he simply wasn't up to it, I'm afraid.
He should go now (and take Jones with him..)

I know that you are anti Mixu but I actually think that Nish is going to be a more than useful player in the comng season. He can be a handful for most defences and this creates space around him. But he needs a sharp penalty box player to play with him in the Scott MacDonald mould. Rankin is not strong enough to play on the left side of Hibs midfield. The opposition brush past him in every game he plays so I agree with you on that one. As for Benji, he has it in him to be good but he gives up too easily when he is not on his game. Last season he was never on his game so I cannot blame either of the managers for not playing him. He was constantly injured yet played several games for Morocco. How do we explain that if not assuming that he is not interested in Hibs?

I repeat that we have to give Mixu a chance. He has had success at other levels as a manager and coach and he will improve Hibs - I believe that.

As you will see from my post above, I believe that Mixu, as a motivator, will take Hibs forward to a good couple of seasons. He strikes me as an intelligent thinking coach who will get it right. I would like to see more of the promising reserve and under 19 talent getting first team chances. There are some good ones in there whose progress will be slowed if we continue to bring in average SPL players on Donald Park's recommendation eg Rankin and Canning. Canning is a useful squad player as a cover centre half as these guys pick up cautions and injuries. Jones I like. The defence is much weaker without his arial power and committment. Its all about opinions though!
