SAMANTHA Power is an intelligent, educated and committed woman. Her achievements in the United States since leaving Dublin as a child have been remarkable. She is a graduate of Yale University and of Harvard Law School. She is the founder of the Carr Centre for Human Rights Policy and she is a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for her book, A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide. Unsurprisingly, she entered the world of politics and became Barack Obama's key foreign policy aide.
The battle for the Democratic presidential nomination between Obama and Hillary Clinton has become increasingly bitter and personal. Obama, and other independent commentators, have blamed Clinton's attacks as a major factor in his disappointing showi
ng in Texas and Ohio. Make no mistake, this is turning out to be a brawl for the White House challenge.

So when Samantha Power comes out in an interview with The Scotsman and says Hillary "is a monster", and then says "you look at her and you think erggh…", it is not just knock-about stuff, it is a serious political story that will have a major impact on the race for the White House. The story became the political event of the day yesterday in the US.

A major plank of Hillary's campaign has been the inexperience of Obama and his team at high levels of politics. Obama's top economic policy adviser, Austan Goolsbee, seemed to fall into the inexperience trap when he told Canadian officials that a public pledge to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement was only about political positioning.

And now Ms Power, perhaps feeling a little more relaxed by speaking in London and underestimating the truly global nature of 21st-century news, again appears to have let inexperience be her undoing.

But it is hugely regrettable that she felt compelled to resign. She is a talented woman and will be a loss to politics, although probably not forever.

Before there are any thoughts about a whiff of hypocrisy, this is not about newspapers building 'em up and knocking 'em down. The media report what politicians say, like what Ms Power said. And yes, what she had to say was controversial.

She admits it was a moment of weakness, she says she lost her temper and acknowledges she should not have said it. But she did. In a very dignified manner she accepted that the inevitable should happen, that she would lose her job. But that should not have been inevitable. While intemperate language is regrettable, it speaks of passion and commitment, and those are qualities people in public life should have.

In this case particularly, Ms Power will be a grave loss. When committed people do not say the right thing, when they make genuine mistakes of this nature, we should allow them to apologise, learn and grow from these rather than resign, otherwise the fear is no-one will say anything other than "on-message" platitudes.

It wouldn't be so bad if politicians in this country only ever came out with platitudes. Maggie Broon and his ilk in the New Labour Sleaze and Corruption Party only ever come out with blatant lies, misrepresentations and broken promises.

CFR/Bilderberg Plan To Erase US Borders Finally Gets Attention

The open plan to merge the US with Mexico and Canada and create a Pan American Union networked by a NAFTA Super Highway has long been a Globalist brainchild but its very real and prescient implementation on behalf of the Council on Foreign Relations has finally been reported on by mainstream news outlets.

I hardly think this opinion piece counts as an adequate response to all the criticism that the Scotsman has received for publishing off the record comments.

At issue here is not really Ms Power's understandable naivety in saying something off-the-record in the belief that journalists would honour their word and treat it as confidential.

Much more to the issue is the dishonour of the Scotsman in not respecting standard journalistic agreements. Perhaps also the Scotsman's team were naive in not recognising that in the state of the current Democrat race their printing this story would force Ms Power to resign for the simple reason that she could not allow herself to become the story. To publish this opinion piece alluding to notions of some higher principle that ought to be at work in public life that would allow her to say these things and not resign is just a crass attempt to divert attention from the Scotsman's ir-responsibility here.

Simply put: the Scotsman has failed to uphold an essential component of journalistic behaviour that is essential for maintaining a free and truthful press. In doing so you have let down not only Ms Powers but all of decent society. So, kindly stop trying to make excuses and diversions and come out and accept that you got it badly, badly wrong.

How utterly bizarre. This woman loses her job because the Scotsman publishes a remark which she claims was off the record and the Scotsman then prints a leader saying 'We must not scare our politicians into silence'. Can't get my head round that one, sorry!

We must not scare our politicians into Silence is quite insightful. I for one do not want to hear simply the well schooled political statements that are "slippery as eels" when it comes to the truth. It is sad that someone with the integrity, accomplishments, intellegence, and insight, that Ms. Power has, should be lost from "politics" because she was "too honest" with her feelings.

Perhaps this incident will cause people in both the Obama and Clinton camps to pause and realize that these groups - while competing for the nomination - are more similar than different and this dehumanizing each other with rhetoric is doing all a disservice. Both camps need to be building bridges so that no matter the nomination outcome they can join together to win the election with power. These people are not 1 dimensional and supporters on both sides need to keep that in perspective. This is not just a little political game - this is our future.

The Scotsman are being hypocritical here. They took part in the pact regarding Prince Harry. If their principles are so strong why did they do that? Why didn't they make it a headline that Prince Harry intends to go to Afghanistan? They could have then said his going would put the lives of others at risk etc., which of course was true and the visit will have repercussions for some time for those who are left behind. Similar to the media attitude to when he was to go to Iraq last year.

Naw, hypocracy it is. No need to keep substantiating your view Scotsman, I think most of us have it.

There was NO "journalistic agreement" between Ms. Powers and Ms. Peev. I am absolutely at a loss to understand why that fact is so hard for some people to grasp... on both sides of the Atlantic.

What is "essential for maintaining a free and truthful press" is to have journalists like Ms. Peev that report the truth and do not bow to a need for political advantageousness.

And to listen to anyone from the US speak of media ethics is laughable since we allow our own main stream media to manipulate public opinion at will.

Huzzah Scotsman and Huzzah Ms. Peev!!! Would that our own media had more real journalists with integrity.

It is my understanding this person is not a politician, rather, specific aide (adviser?) one of that army of camp followers to the celebrity, the influencial unaccountable mass the are never held to account or scrutiny when it all goes sour. The bones are piling up in Iraq, Afghanistan and other places, while the adviser(s) go on to bigger and better salaries.
That one was quoted and took the honest route is not a cause for sadness, but hope. As able as Ms Powers appears to be she will no doubt return to the arena wiser and more circumspect in her utterings. For honesty is a rare commodity in Politics and it needs to be nurtured.
