A RECORD number of new cases of HIV were reported in Scotland last year including a rise in heterosexual infections, figures revealed yesterday.
Health Protection Scotland (HPS) said the 446 cases seen in 2007 was a 29 per cent increase on the 345 cases reported in the previous year.

The figures come after sexual health campaigners warned of growing ignorance over safe sex messages.

In
2007 there were 188 new HIV cases reported in gay men – up from 138 in 2006.

There were 181 cases in heterosexual men and women – up from 155 – and just nine in injecting drug-users. Further details are not yet available.

The majority of cases among heterosexuals – 75 per cent – are thought to have been acquired outside the UK.

This compared to just 20 per cent of cases in gay men.

Of the 127 total cases thought to have been acquired in Scotland last year, 87 per cent were among gay men.

This prompted appeals from charities for this group to come forward for more HIV testing.

There are now an estimated 5,415 people living with HIV in Scotland.

Glenn Codere, from Health Protection Scotland, said: "These figures are a mixture of good news and bad news.

"On the one hand, we have the lowest number of cases ever reported in drug users but on the other we have the highest number of cases overall."

Part of the reason for the rise was an increase in HIV testing.

"In 2006, there were 38,000 HIV tests carried out in Scotland. This compared to 17,000 in 2000," he said. "There is still a problem with safe sex messages getting through."

HIV Scotland called for sexually active gay men to have an HIV and sexual health check-up.

The charity's chief executive Roy Kilpatrick said: "Even when a gay man has had a negative test in the past, if they are sexually active we recommend a clinic check-up and an HIV test."

PUBLIC IGNORANCE ON DISEASE
THE high-profile HIV awareness campaigns of the 1980s had a major impact on the public.

But there are growing fears that the warnings are no longer being heeded, as people start to see HIV as something that affects others and not themselves.

The National Aids Trust believes there is a "worrying" lack of HIV knowledge in Scotland.

A survey found only 69 per cent of Scots identified sex without a condom as a possible way of passing HIV between a man and a woman. That was compared with 93 per cent in the south-west of England.

Only 65 per cent of Scots thought that unprotected sex between two men was a way in which the disease could be passed on.

Campaigners have called for renewed awareness-raising efforts.

Earlier this month, the Scottish Government announced a £1 million plan to provide more information on sexually transmitted infections.

From the newsitem itwould appear that gay men practise safe sex more than straight men - at least when travelling. Why is this so?

And the increase I attribute to drunken, drugged numpties forgetting or ignoring condoms and the protection they provide most of the time.

Young men think they are invincible but it will be a rude awakening when they get HIV and then Aids and all manner of STDs.

Smarten up you fornicating losers!

#3 You're wrong, gay men make up 20% of new cases, but less than 20% of the population, also how many of these "new cases" are actually economic migrants and bogus asylem seekers?

Let us say that half of heterosexuals newly infected with HIV, were men. Therefore 90 or 91 heterosexual men were infected in 2007, compared with 188 gay men. Recent research indicates that only 3% of British men are practising homosexuals. The risk of a gay man contracting HIV is thus 66.8 times greater than that of a heterosexual man. Why? Is it because gay men are hugely promiscuous? Is it because gay men don't know how to use condoms, are incapable of using condoms, or refuse to use condoms? Why should I care? Because all of us end up paying to keep HIV-infected people alive & healthy, for many years & during that time they are quite obviously going on to infect others.

Hello Caorah,

Well written and thought out post!

The sad fact is that there is no such thing as 'safe sex' outside of marriage (given that both spouses are faithful).
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) here in the US, YEARS ago, did a study about HIV infection rates concerning condoms: result-they don't really work.

Using an analogy which all folks could follow, the CDC stated that if the cell wall of the best condom made was put into the numerical value of 'feet' and the same was done for the HIV cell to compare the two, the size of the condom cell would be 15 feet in diameter and that of the HIV cell would be 3 feet-a 5 to 1 ratio in favor of the HIV getting through the best condom made.

To further the problem, anal sex is NOT conducive to condom integrity; such sexual activity destroys the condom and thereby abrogates what little protection it offers.

I would further point out, that anal sex is highly destructive of the rectum, sphincter muscles, and colon itself: this is why so many people (both hetero and homo sexuals) whom have engaged in long term anal sex no longer have rectal control.

It is also why so many intestinal ailments have cropped up during the last 4 decades; our bodies were not meant to be subjected to such unnatural abuse.

Until people understand that the issue is one of biological design requirements, rather than politics, nothing will improve.

Cheers from the Rockies

Hello again All,

I would like to address a single issue as to why so many more homosexuals are STILL becoming infected with HIV.

The answer is simple: they are STILL engaging in sexual practices which were not designed to be performed with the human body.

Heterosexual sex (vaginal sex) is the biological norm: male and female genitalia were designed to allow for the physical stresses of heteroseuxal sex.

Anal sex on the other hand (no pun intended), whether hetero or homo sexual, was NOT a biological design, as can be seen from the physical damage resulting from anal sex.

Further, the diseases (sans HIV) which arise from anal sex is also another signature of a non-supported biological behaviour; the bacteria within the colon does nasty things to the other person's body, should said bacterial invade the other person's body (which is often the case).

In short, anal activities such as 'fi sting', 'rimming', 'gerbilization', and 'basic' anal intercourse, are highly counter-intuitive from a biological and health point of view.

Lastly, there is a truly disturbing trend amongst young homosexuals here in the USA, where they attend 'parties' where the goal is to become INTENTIONALLY INFECTED with HIV.

No, I'm not kidding. These Parties are called 'Bug Parties':
http://gaylife.about.com/cs/gaylifeglossary/g/bugparties.htm

Parties of this type occur on a regular basis in LA, Frisco, New York, Miami, etc.

Here are a few sources from different perspectives:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bugchasing_and_giftgiving
http://notd.blogs.com/notd/2003/01/rolling_stones_.html

Folks, considering that some homosexuals are now 'Bug Chasers' (those seekng to become HIV positive) and 'Gift Givers' (those who are HIV positive willing to transmit the disease), coupled (again, no pun intended) with the high cost of anti-AIDS drugs ($35,000-$50,000 a year), this IS a situation of concern for all involved, and
