THERE may be a couple of defences left open to us after a complaint from Robert Miller-Bakewell, but neither of them are very convincing. The fact is we made quite a serious error. We have to be seen to be above questions of partiality or deference to powerful factions, and in this case we were not.
Mr Miller-Bakewell wrote: “I always have understood that it was best newspaper publishing practice to separate/distinguish between news reporting, comment/opinion and advertising.

“You carried an opinion article by Jack Perry, chairman of Scottish...

Mr Stewart's key words: "Reporters do not write headlines and are not responsible for them. In this case, the mistake lay with the sub-editor."

I have complained periodically for several years about The Scotsman's misleading, irrelevant, and sometimes flat wrong headlines. Maybe there should me more supervision of sub-editors.

The Hootsmon regularly publishes articles which purport to be news items but are, in fact, biased opinions from their card carrying Labour Party propagandists masquerading as journalists.

I'd also like to know how much they pay Forfoulkesake and that Midwinter character for their comments which they regularly include in their Anti-SNP articles. Again, they publish it as news; it is not, it is propaganda.

As for some of their so-called journalists and subbies, as mentioned before, they need to be sent on a course to learn a bit about Scotland, the Scottish people, customs, culture and history. That way they would avoid making so many gaffes.

The Hootsmon needs to remember that, particularly in this day and age, they are not a leader of public opinion, and that they should actually pay more attention to the views of the people, and less to their card carrying Labour Party journalists/subbies/editors.

There is not much wrong with a newspaper which owns up to mistakes it has made.

#3. What's the name of the newspaper you're on about? Or is that just wishful thinking on your part?

I forgot to mention about the Hootsmon needing to rein in their censors, i.e. the Pravda Branch, Xinhua Branch, and their new Mary Whithouse Branch censors.

The latter are getting out of hand in their blocking the use of perfectly normal, acceptable words in the English language. We are, for example, no longer allowed to t o s s a caber, or p e r v e r t the course of justice. We'll all have to learn newspeak soon, to be able to comment in the Hootsmon.
