Rice urges Pakistan to co-operate over Mumbai

EXPLOSIVES were yesterday found in Mumbai's main train station, which police said were left over from last week's attacks.
The bomb squad defused the two 8lb bombs, said Bapu Domre, the assistant commissioner of police, but it was not clear last night why they had not been found earlier.

The discovery came as Condoleezza Rice, the US secretary of state, visited Ne
w Delhi and called for full co-operation from Pakistan to ease tensions in the region after the attacks, which left at least 171 dead.

Indian and US officials have blamed the three-day assault on Pakistani militants, but stopped short of naming the banned group Lashkar-e-Taiba. However, Pranab Mukherjee, the Indian foreign minister, said the attacks were led from inside Pakistan, and said India would act decisively to protect its territorial integrity.

He said: "I informed Dr Rice there is no doubt that the terrorist attacks in Mumbai were perpetrated by individuals who came from Pakistan and whose controllers are in Pakistan."

Pakistan has condemned the assault, denied any involvement by state agencies and vowed to work with India in the inquiry. Nevertheless, the accusations have sparked fears the nuclear-armed neighbours might slide towards a fourth war since independence from Britain in 1947 unless cool heads prevail. It is feared a confrontation would undermine efforts to bring stability to Afghanistan and defeat al-Qaeda.

Dr Rice met the Indian prime minister, Manmohan Singh, and other leaders in the Indian capital and is due to visit Islamabad today. She said the US was "already actively engaged in information sharing" with Indian authorities, and she made clear that Islamabad would also have to cooperate with the investigation.

"President (Asif Ali] Zardari has told me that he will follow the leads wherever they go," she said. "I have said that Pakistan needs to act with resolve and urgency, and co-operate fully."

She said it was too early to say who was responsible for the attack, but added: "Whether there is a direct al-Qaeda hand or not, this is clearly the kind of terror in which al-Qaeda participates."

India has called on Pakistan to turn over 20 people who are "fugitives of Indian law" and wanted for questioning, but Mr Zardari said the suspects would be tried in Pakistan if they were found to be hiding there and if there was evidence of wrongdoing.

"At the moment, these are just names of individuals – no proof and no investigation," he said.

A week after the attacks, more details of intelligence failures began to emerge, drawing further criticism to authorities already blamed for acting slowly during the 60-hour siege created by ten gunmen.

Sureesh Mehta, the head of the navy, earlier called India's failure to act on multiple warnings "a systemic failure". India had received a warning from the United States that militants were plotting a waterborne assault on Mumbai and that hotels might be targeted.

The chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff also urged Pakistan yesterday to investigate all possible links between the Mumbai attacks and Pakistani groups and to broaden its campaign against militants.

Admiral Mike Mullen flew in for talks with Pakistan's eight-month-old civilian government and military commanders.

A US embassy statement said Admiral Mullen "encouraged Pakistani leaders to take more, and more concerted, action against militant extremists elsewhere in the country".

AK Antony, the Indian defence minister, told his military chiefs they needed to improve intelligence co-ordination so security forces could act on all credible threats, according to a ministry statement. The statement said he discussed beefing up maritime security and "reviewed in detail the preparedness against any possible terror threats from air."

Meanwhile, David Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, said yesterday as he arrived in Brussels for Nato talks, that the terrorist attacks in Mumbai had underscored the need for the West to help Pakistan tackle terrorism.

Hmmm, let's see, Condoleezza Rice shows up and at the very same time they miraculously discover two bombs at the railway station, coincidence or tampering with the truth? A couple of well placed bombs after the fact will rouse many suspicions and will point the finger at Pakistan, but the Pakistani government would not be so stupid as to actually condone last weeks attacks for they surely were not involved. And what the hell are Scotland Yard and the FBI doing there anynyways, no jurisdiction for neither of them, just typical interference by the West so that they can conveniently distort the truth once more and cover up what really happened.

Pure conspiracy and paranoia.

Not a lick of fact in your post, and then people wonder why we can't all get along.

#2 SouthernGent,
Have you actually got a comment on the article or are you following me around on the last two posts?
Would you care to explain to me why you think that Scotland Yard and the FBI are competely out of their jurisdiction and are mucking around in India?
It's not for their so called expertise, they can be consulted in other ways rather than actually being there in the physical sense.
It is obvious why they are there, the Americans are already supporting and aiding India with nuclear technology and Britain being the suckholes that they are to the Americans will just confirm whatever garbage lies the Yanks come up with in their investigations.
The Americans are also guilty of cross-border bombings and missile attacks into Pakistan and want to make the Pakistanis look like the ones that attacked India.
The FBI is infamous for their cover-ups and cover-up attempts and are in India just to distort the truth and make Pakistan look like the guilty party.

They don't need the bombs that where found to prove Pakistani involvement.

The have the Communication records from the Satellite Phone found on the Boat they used as well as the call records from the mobile phones found on the dead terrorists.

The US, UK, Canada and Australia have very strong expertise in intercepting international communications, almost as good as the Chinese Government is at intercepting domestic communications.

They have the smoking gun, and will use it to pressure Pakistan to get serious about disrupting terrorists operating on their territory.

Watch out for Obama, he is not going to mollycoddle Pakistan like the Bush administration did.

It looks like he will be sending Richard Holbrook to deal with this, if you think this guy is a soft touch, just ask the Serbs.

#4 Jim A,
How soon the world forgets eh? You surely must recall how the US and the UK lied about weapons of mass destruction to illegally invade and occupy Iraq now Jim? They're still there as you're reading this, illegally there I may add.
Look how the US led NATO forces are occupying Afghanistan as we speak, all because they are supposedly hiding bin-Laden.
So maybe before you think that I should start writing spy novels you should look at what's happening around the world because of certain countries trying to push Democracy down the throats of unwilling other countries and you'll see that my reasoning isn't far fetched.

"They don't need the bombs that where found to prove Pakistani involvement."

You've got that right, they've got umpteen ways of tampering with the evidence to implicate Pakistan.
For arguments sake, let's suppose that the attackers were indeed of Pakistani origin and trained in Pakistan, that still doesn't prove that the Pakistani government has any involvement.
You need to remember that the US is backing India and providing India with nuclear technology whilst denying anyone other than Israel in that area to have any nuclear capabilities. Biased to say the least, bringing me to my suspicions.
You also need to remember that the US is currently illegally occupying Iraq with their suckholing British buddies present to toe the line.
Thus my suspicions of both The FBI and Scotland Yard involvement. Both of these organizations have no international jurisdiction, that's where Interpol would need to be called upon, but Interpol can't be trusted to go along with the tampering so they've not been invited.

See where all of this can lead?
The US started this garbage and now the fall-out is already starting and the US just doesn't know when to quit. I seriously hope that Obama will reverse the nuclear deal with India so that there can be relative stability between Pakistan and India.
The Mumbai attacks could well be related to the nuclear deal between India and the US for certain groups know that if doesn't get stopped now it will soon be too late.

Yet more proof of American arrogance and 'thumbing its nose' at International law. Is it any wonder why there are so many terrorist attacks occurring? The Americans are not welcome in the Middle East, they are there illegally and are upsetting the region to the extreme and need to go back and sort out their own ever-getting-bigger mess at home and let the rest of the world iron out its own problems.

With her track record she should throw in the towel on the India/Pakistan situation too before she makes it worse as she did in Palestine.

Well one thing's for sure, we sure as hell don't need that kind of 'rice' in China.
I thought of her as a classy lady a long time ago but then she sold her soul to the Devil that goes by the name of George W. Bush and she's lost all respect and credibility since.
Let's hope that she takes a winter vacation until January the 20th and then Hillary can take over, she at least knows something about politics.
Rice is a professor and needs to go back to classroom, but this time as a student.

Indian officials are clutching at straws in order to divert attention away from the fact that they did not heed 2 warnings from US intel that terrorists ( not the Pakistani government !! ) were likely to launch sea-front attacks. Pakistani forces are fighting a tough battle on the western front against allsorts of idiots in an effort to help the Afghans , so it is pointless to even suggest the Pakistani government would stoop to something as vile as the Mumbai assault.

Rice's remarks would be best addressed to Bush, Cheney, Blair, Brown and the rest of her gang. They are the ones who created and nurtured international terrorism by murdering millions of innocents and encouraging Israel in its vileness.

9/11, Bali, Madrid, London, Mumbai are only a start; we need to get rid of our criminal leaders who are leading us to to Armageddon.

You've seen me post here many times so you should be aware by now of the fact that I'm against the death penalty, so no, if I was a member of a jury the suspect would be spared his/her life, regardless of the crime.
The reason you see me post here what I have posted on this article is for the reason that the US and the UK have lied about everything they are doing in both Iraq and Afghanistan and when I see the FBI and Scotland Yard actually investigating something in India, alarm bells go off. Neither one of those have jurisdiction in India and are there strictly to tamper with and cover up evidence, anything to make Pakistan look like the guilty party. Like I said before, if this is indeed an international crime, then let Interpol come in and do the investigations, after all the victims represent the whole world, not just Americans and Britons. You need to accept the fact that your administration is an evil one guilty of widespread terrorism and their credibility is zilch. I've got nothing against you or your fellow Americans but your administration is a sickening bunch who need to be tried for war crimes, they've 'thumbed their noses' at international law time and again and need to answer for their dispicable actions which have caused the suffering of so many innocent.

They where also implicated in the recent attack on the Indian Embassy in Kabul.

ISI has and continues to use terrorists to carry out missions it believes to be in the national interest of Pakistan.

Whether the elected leadership of Pakistan has any control over them is another question.

Most intellegence would indicate that the entire agency has gone rogue and is operating without civilian oversight.

Either the Pakistani's must put them back on a leash, or others will start to see them as no different than the terrorists they support. Which will have profound ramifications for Pakistan.

Why don't you say what you really mean.

An American allied India is a threat to Chinas "peaceful rise" as the regional superpower in Asia. That is the totallity of your concern.

Its OK, you can become Pakistans "New Best Friend".

They can join the Chinese club of Sudan, Zimbabwe, Myanmar and North Korea.

Why is it that China's only friends are all run by mentally ill dicatators?

Is it because China is run by similar people?

Since you are against the death penalty, and you happen to reside in the Worlds Leader in Executions maybe rather than enlightening us with your absurd conspiracy theories you could devote your time to working to help end the state sponsored murder that goes on everyday in your adopted country.
