Published Date: 15 July 2008
BANK of England policymakers were dealt a fresh blow today after surging food and petrol prices pushed inflation to a new record during June.
The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) jumped to 3.8% last month from 3.3% – higher than expected by City economists and almost double the Bank's 2% target – according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The Bank's official inflation benchmark i
s now at its highest level since CPI records began in January 1997. Based on historical data prior to this, inflation was last higher in May 1992.

The worse-than-expected figures mean the Bank has less breathing space to cut interest rates despite mounting signs of economic slowdown, which have prompted fears over a recession.

A record rise in food prices was one of the main factors behind the inflation jump – highlighting the hikes faced by consumers in their weekly shopping bills.

June saw large increases in beef and pork sausage prices, as well as big hikes in the cost of rice, white bread, biscuits and frozen pizza. The cost of milk across a range of supermarkets has risen by around 10p for four pints and 4p for two pints, the ONS added.

Meanwhile, average petrol prices rose 5.3p a litre during the month to 117.6p thanks to surging oil prices, outstripping last year's smaller increases and adding to motorists' forecourt misery. Diesel also rose 7.3p last month compared with just 0.6p 12 months earlier.

Gas and electricity bills – which were unchanged in June but fell a year earlier – added to the inflation pressure.

There was no respite for those looking to escape the gloom with a holiday as package holiday costs rose this year.

The prices of computer games and DVDs also rose during the month, according to the ONS, despite falling clothing and footwear prices as desperate retailers sought to tempt in shoppers with even bigger price cuts.

The figures add to bad news for inflation-watchers yesterday when factory gate prices – a measure of how much manufacturers charge for their goods – rose 10% in the year to June. This is the first double-digit annual rise for more than 20 years.

Today's data also showed the headline rate of Retail Prices Index inflation, which includes mortgage payments, rising to 4.6% from 4.3% over the month, the highest since March 2007.

The big increases in food, petrol and gas and electricity were partially offset by a lower increase in mortgage payments than last year and a downward impact from sliding property prices.

Paul Kenny, general secretary of the GMB union said: "The Government will pay a high price at the polls if it does not take more active steps to curb speculation in the oil market, which has hiked the price of everything, and take steps to dismantle the energy regulatory regime left by the Tories, which has delivered the highest electricity and gas prices in Europe."

Typical, the SNP have only been in "power" (by, like, 100 votes on one seat) and now inflation is soaring, ot mention knife crime.

Honestly, Labour and the SNP are as bad as each other.

Boggle fey the Bog,

The almost true figures!!!

Retail Prices Index (RPI) inflation rose to 4.6 per cent in June,

RPIX inflation – the all items RPI excluding mortgage interest payments – was 4.8 per cent in June, up from 4.4 per cent in May

Why has the Hootsmaun not given the full figures, if you are interested go here:

http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=19

So even on their fiddled figures inflation is running at 4.8%, but they use the CPI indicator as it has all sorts of things removed, like housing costs, tax, etc.

The Hootsmaun should hang their collective heads in shame, is it not of national interest to expoes these lies, or are they just 'towing the pary line'.

Shame on you Scotsman Journos

#2 You are wrong #1 has a fair point - they are all as bad as each other. Neither labourism or nationalism will provide the solutions to what is a world crisis of the capitalist system which although not at a stage of imminent collapse will continue to fail the vast populations of the world. I suggest that you go and get a copy of The Communist Manifesto written by Karl Marx and Freddie Engels way back in 1848 - its spot on!

Hmmm. High inflation due to high oil and food prices..

Let me see..... Food is more expensive as most of it is transported and delivered by vehicles using fuel.

Goverment takes the majority of every pound spent on fuel by Duty and VAT...

Oil goes up... Duty goes up... Prices go up... Inflation goes up...

.... Quick solution... CUT FUEL DUTY.. Fuel prices come down... Delivery costs reduce... Food costs come down.... Inflation comes down. Problem solved

Which part of the equation are the goverment not getting their thick heads round.. Oh I know. the part where they cut tax on something to help the average person of this country as it might reduce the pot to be squandred own their own extravagant lifestyle.

Everyone is simply paying for this governments own greed and stupidity..

I thought Broon had defeated this boom and bust cycle forever?

So, you mean to tell me that we have lost our pensions, our gold, our international credibility, our human rights etc for nothing?????????????

Never mind, he assures us that he is listening now!!

#8 Too true.... Problem is the gap between Broons ears is constantly being vented to free up space for yet more hair brained stupidity.

Have you noticed that everytime he drops that gaping maw of a jaw of his he lets out more garbage?. All that does is free up space for more stupidity

If brains were chocolate he'd struggle to fill a smartie.

Estate agents lie again,

This Labour government, like the other governments before it, have urinated our money up the wall for many many years now. This government is skint and yet they're chucking what we have left on Olympics and they want to spend another £20BILLION on the hairbrain ID scheme. If you don't believe me, watch Chinese companies buy ours. We have no money for a raint day to stave them off. It's time we held the crooks, liars and swindlers in Westminster and Holyrood firmly to account for their follies and they should face a criminal court if found to have been incompetent and needlessly wasteful with OUR money.
PS - Can I have £10k of taxpayer's money? The missus wants a new kitchen and a couple of nice potted plants.

Of course the REAL trouble with Politics is the fact that all of you VOTE for them, no matter who you're voting for.

Don't Vote. Anybody.

If there was an Election and there was a 0% turn-out . . .

See them try to sort THAT shi-ite out!

Maybe Alan B could tell us again why Euro interest rates of 4.25% would be better suited to Scotland than the UK rate of 5%, when inflation is well above target and climbing....

#13- they'd just declare the results null and void and the same people would stay in power until the next election.

The West has been in trouble for sometime now. The ostriches are just now getting their heads up.

Russia, China and India will be at the fore front of world affairs in the not too distant future. Good gracious, we already have multi millionaire soccer players plying their trade in Russia.

A major NHL star just signed something like a fifty million dollar contract to play in Russia.

Many in the western world have been comfortable believing the lies, and why not? Their pokey little hovels have tripled in value. So I am all right Jack sets in.

However it looks like as in the early eighties, inflation will rip the countries apart.

Remember when mortages were 21%.. Should that occur again we are in trouble, as the debt loads of most countries in the West is astonishing.

All the best.

The Bank of England(why this name)has admitted in the past that the base rate is set to suit the South East of England, even to the detriment of the Scottish economy.Another good reason for ending London rule.
