Britain is a 'soft touch' in fight against extremist threat, says report

Published Date: 15 February 2008
BRITAIN is becoming a "soft touch" in the face of mounting security threats at home and abroad, a defence think-tank warned today.
A report by the Royal United Services Institute said that a loss of confidence in the nation's identity and institutions was increasingly making the UK a "target" for attack.

The failure to "lay down the line" to immigrant communities had undermined the fight against extremism, it said, and it urged ministers to restore defence and security as the first duty of government.

Specifically, the report called for the creation of a powerful new Cabinet committee, made up of senior ministers, officials and defence chiefs, to co-ordinate security policy across the full spectrum of government activity.

The report is based on the deliberations of a group of academics and military figures. They said the world appeared to be in a "time of remission" between the 11 September, 2001 attacks and their eventual successor, which may deliver "an even greater psychological blow".

The report added: "We look like a soft touch."

Hmmm, this one line - "The failure to "lay down the line" to immigrant communities had undermined the fight against extremism" makes me wonder what the makeup of the committee is.

Not that I disagree with their opinion, it just makes me wonder.

#3 From their web site:
"RUSI is the leading forum in the UK for national and international Defence and Security. Founded in 1831 by the Duke of Wellington, RUSI is the oldest institute of its kind in the world."

I am sure that they are people of high calibre who's informed opinions are worth listening to.

One of the first decent reports we've seen recently. "Soft touch" sums it up in practically any area you care to think about from benefits to immigration to religious extremists.

Why fight a war against terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan only to casually accept that illegal immigration on a vast scale is well kind of OK because we lost control of it and couldn't really be bothered following up and chucking them out. In amongst that number...

On the principle of the polluter pays, shall we start taxing the socialist morons who's ideology got us into this mess in the first place?

And its taken them this long to announce this. D'oH! Between Bush, Blair and the numpty who said the the festival was a probable target noone is surprised. We let people who want to blow up this country freedom of speech and tolerate their insightment of hatred yet if we say one word about this we are branded trouble makers and racists.

The British National Party have been saying that for years and accusacion of racism followed.
It's time anyone recognise they were right and start to see what is good in their policies.

Interesting little article. Especially this part:

"Specifically, the report called for the creation of a powerful new Cabinet committee, made up of senior ministers, officials and defence chiefs, to co-ordinate security policy across the full spectrum of government activity."

It's funny, you know, how indigenous people end up being the ones spied on by CCTV, subjected to stop and search, and will soon be forced to carry Biometric ID Cards. But it's for our security! Aye - we'll give up our liberty for security. What have we got from multiculturalism? The surveillance society.

And if you don't think that puts a chill on free speech just count the number of posts on this thread!

Alan, you couldn't be MORE wrong about "Socialists" being to blame!!

Most of what New Labour does is purely for the benefit of BIG BUSINESS.

Who benefits from opening the borders wide and letting in millions of Immigrants who are willing to work for the minimum wage?

Who benefits from 24 drinking? Not your local A&E department.

Who benefits from changing planning laws in favour of Developers/Builders?

Who benefits from £ 170 billion of PFI's in the NHS alone?

Who benefits from the huge increase in Taxation under Labour?

With Brave New Labour big business benefits everytime.

Blair and Brown are far more Laisssez-faire than Thatcher......and only Dimwits would think anything else.

15# 16# Very well said.

And, it is sinister that the 9/11 incident continues to count as the starting point of all our problems. It was, in fact, the start of the war on terror, which we have been subjected to since.

8 G Lauder - the make up of RUSI is more likely to be people of high social status, power, wealth and self-inerest, than calibre and opinions worth listening to.

british state is fascist in the true sense of the word. fear as the engine of control, the re-making of language as malleable pap incapable of expressing/defining dissent. these are the very symptoms of fascism george orwell described so vividly

Its seems we automatically become this cringing p*ssy of a nation when we stop invading other countries.

17 Yes it is strange how the 9/11 incident started everything off. And how any investigation of that incident is always out of the question.

The EU parliament are going to discuss 9/11 truth by the way .... never reported by the Scotsman, the BBC or anybody else but http://www.911truth.org/article.php?story=20080215144019801

I have also reccently begain to wonder about 9/11 and China???
