THE man posing the biggest political challenge to Iranian authorities in three decades is a veteran of the Islamic revolution and an unlikely champion of reform.
Mir Hossain Mousavi, left, enjoys the support of leading Iranian reformists, and broke new ground in the socially conservative country by campaigning with his wife, a prominent academic. He is an establishment figure, who has served eight years as prime minister.

He supports detente with Iran's western foes, but rejects their main demand – an end to uranium enrichment.

He backs responsible economic and foreign policy, and an easing of social restrictions on women.

Mousavi, former (Khomeini) revolutionary and Prime Minister of Iran, is by dint of his past essentially an establishment man, which seems at odds with the present situation. However, his opposition to the much-loathed Ahmadinejad presents a nasty kettle of fish to the current ruling establishment.

Salient quote from The Times (15 June 2009): "Mousavi supporters are educated, urban, intellectual. A lot are women. They are not natural streetfighters." The key word therein is "educated". Education opens minds; it is a concept feared by authoritarians, whether driven by religious or other secular ideological fundamentalism.

The fact that many of this opposition are educated, etc., invariably strikes fear into the hearts of dictators not just in Iran but everywhere. (They represent genuine challenge with genuine and knowledgeable popular support.) Check out dictatorships everywhere historically and see what happens to the educated, the intellectual, not to mention women who belong to both categories. Moreover, see what eventually happens to evil dictatorships that stifle the will of the people they purport to represent. History reveals all.
