MANY of the normally tranquil country lanes in and around Kelso and Duns will reverberate to the piercing wail of Britain's fastest rally cars this weekend when the Jim Clark International Rally gets underway.
Such is the attraction of the only event to be held totally on closed-off public tarmac roads in mainland Britain that the entry list was closed after 350 applications for the 300 places. "Our only disappointment is having to turn so many away," said rally manager Colin Pagan.

Organised by the Berwick & District Motor Club and Border Ecosse Car Club, the Jim Clark is the second round of the Tesco British Rally Championship.

Competitors tackle 21 stages, six this evening and the rest tomorrow, finishing in Kelso in the afternoon.

Ryan Champion leads the British championship by five points, with Aberdeen's Barry Clark the fastest Scot.
