THESE might be harsh times in the jobs market, but it seems there is still plenty of work for people who can provide their own dark suits and sunglasses.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation, the United States's famed law enforcement agency, is seeking to fill thousands of posts as it embarks on the biggest recruitment drive in its 101-year history.

The vacancies include 850 special agents, a role
glamorised by hit TV shows such as The X-Files and Without a Trace, and the Oscar-winning film Silence of the Lambs.

There are a further 2,100 "professional staff positions" available behind the scenes: jobs include intelligence analysts, fingerprint experts, language specialists and electronics technicians, presumably for help with wire-tapping and other hi-tech eavesdropping.

"Your country needs you," said Richard Kolko, the FBI's chief spokesman. "This is a great time to apply for a great job."

Perks include healthcare benefits and up to five weeks' annual holiday. However, the job description makes no mention of dark glasses, trenchcoats or trilby hats, favoured by James Cagney's gangster-chasing federal agent in the 1935 film G-Men, which gave FBI agents their nickname.

FBI officials say the hiring blitz is necessary to counter new threats to internal security, especially from cyber crime, domestic terrorism and blue-collar criminals. Applicants with language skills and computer expertise will be welcome.

"We're looking for professionals in a wide variety of fields who have a deep desire to help protect our nation from terrorists, spies, and others who wish us harm," said John Raucci, the assistant director of the FBI's human resources division.

Applicants, who must be US citizens and pass extensive background screening including interviews with family, friends and former colleagues, will be expected to uphold the agency's motto of fidelity, bravery and integrity.

To be an FBI agent, I thought one needed a degree in either law or accounting. I wonder if this prerequisite still applies?

They're looking for LANGUAGE skills and offering big bonuses to sign on.
I have a med student previously from Kashmir staying with me who speaks five languages. He told me he considered the FBI. He says he'd be the first one shot so he's not going to consider it in any way. Pretty scary, but I completely see his view. I told him it was probably a desk job,, safe and boring but he said he didn't think so. ??

As for a degree, I'm not sure if they even require a high school degree. My daughter's best friend was recruited while still in high school, she was a Latin scholar, and was fluent in Japanese, a few Chinese dialects, Spanish and German.

Carolyn, I believe you need a degree, and they want language, lawyers, criminal justice grads, and accountants. Your daughter's best friend would probably have had her college education paid for by them.

You're probably right about the degree. For what Scullion is thinking, those guys are the forensic accountants, don't you think they probably have multiple PHDs to figure out the complex schemes like Enron and all the scumbags now on Wall Street..

but as for my daughter's friend, it was two years after 9-11 and the CIA and FBI were recruiting at all the Ivy league colleges. She had an early acceptance at Harvard but never went. she was tough as nails, black belt included- That girl weighed a hundred and twenty pounds, was skinny as a stick but could drop kick any one coming at her. my guess is maybe she passed an exam that would have equaled a degree, either that or they wanted her enough they didn't care.

these are signs of a fascist state.where there are mass unemployments hence possibility of uprising by the people who are sick to death from social and financial inequality, from corruption and from injustice.

ebbi, Spain - Right on you have called it correctly. Our citizens are rapidly reaching the point of boil over. This of course has the government scrambling to appease the masses with bailouts and stimulus packages - very short term in their scope! Mr Obama has proposed an internal military force equal to our existing defense forces! Imagine now if you are one of those employed and you are sent out to quiet your family and friends and to put down their public dissent! What a bloody mess we are headed towards.

It amazes me Scotsmen are so naieve on american politics. The FBI is little more than a modern Gestapo. Spying on citizens and protecting americans from...that's right, nobody is attacking america! The FBI is an undercover force of snoops...ie. Gestapo. But don't get me wrong. I do not here intend to insult the Gestapo. That was a time of real war, and underground fifth columnists were a real threat. Here in america we have not real terrorist threat. See "Brazil", Terry Gilliams sanguine movie which pretty much sums it up. Peace. And I raise a glass to my friends in Scotland. Bottoms up!

They currently force Scotland to send ALL ITS OIL MONEY to LONDON.

A MASSIVE revenue that is worth £22,831 a minute, £32 million a day, 12 billion a year.

A revenue that is so VAST it would allow Scotland to BUILD 2 SECONDARY SCHOOLS A DAY !!!!!!!!!!
