PRESIDENT-elect Barack Obama pledged to serve members of the American armed forces as well as they had served their country as he marked Veterans' Day yesterday .
Speaking in Chicago, where he laid a wreath at a memorial, he was accompanied by Tammy Duckworth, a disabled Iraq war veteran who is now the Illinois governor's director of veterans' affairs. Mr Obama hugged her in salute of her courage.

Mr Obama,
who will inherit wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan, praised "the extraordinary service and selfless sacrifice of our nation's veterans" who have "defended the American people and stood up for American values".

The president-elect added: "Since 9/11, a new generation of American heroes has borne a heavy load in facing down the threats of the 21st century.

"Their families have been asked to bear the painful absence of a loved one. These Americans are the best and bravest among us, and they are all in our thoughts and prayers."

Mr Obama added: "As your next commander-in-chief, I promise to work every single day to keep that sacred trust with all who have served."

Meanwhile, in New York, speaking of the war on terror, President Bush said: "I'm proud to report to my fellow citizens – our armed forces have showed up for the fight and America is more secure for it."

The day I made a firm decision to not vote for Obama, and to not let anyone I know enlist if he became President, was September 11, at the World Trade Towers, at Ground Zero, when he was with McCain and the fireman in remembrance of those we lost that day.

McCain- the guy who was so tortured that his body barely flexes, carefully bent down and gracefully placed flowers on the grave.

Standing beside McCain, Obama, the young agile basketball player, tossed his flowers over to the grave with no show of respect or care.

1 Carolyn 1,
McCain's body doesn't flex because he's old and washed up, nothing to do with the "torture" he received in Vietnam.
Carolyn, you're a war monger from way back just like your cyber friend Lynne, it's sad to see that the two of you are raising families who more than likely will inherit your screwed up perspective on 'life'. What happened to 'live and let live'? If you leave the Middle East alone they will leave you alone. Quite simple, isn't it?

#2 E=mc^2,
The Americans know that what they got on 9-11 was payback just like what Britain got on 7/7 but you're not supposed to point that out.

Nah don't agree mate, this crãp has been around long before the Gulf wars/invasions. Them folks have been bombing, hi-jacking planes, kidnapping and murdering since the early seventies. Geez mate they can't even get along with each other.

P.S. The Missus and the bump doing ok? Won't be long now mate. Ah well never mind, you'll get all the sleep you need when you turn your toes up ;-)

Geez, I just had to edit my comment, we're not allowed to say crãp, well wrap me in cotton wool and hug me tight.

#4 Jim A,
How's it going Jim?
The Americans have been mucking around in the Middle East long before the suicide bombings and attacks against them occurred and all those attacks against them have been revenge attacks. Up until now the icing on the cake was 9-11 against the Americans and the ongoing attacks against the UK because of interfering in the Middle East. If the western countries had stayed at home all these years there would not have been any reprisals against them, it's quite simple really.
And the Missus is doing fine and the 'bump' is growing rapidly and very active, I think that he or she will come out swinging, kinda like me when I'm backed into a corner:)))))))))
And Jim, I ain't quite that old yet, toes shouldn't be curling up for a spell yet.

Every time you mock me for belonging to PEN, which is the oldest human rights organization, or because I believe in the basic human rights of freedom, I will put up another list of China's abuse and violations.

law professors were warned not to propose abolition of the reeducation-through-labor system.
Social inequalities and uneven economic development, combined with dissatisfaction over widespread official corruption, resulted in increased social unrest. Officials estimated the number of mass incidents was 23,000. Although regulations implemented in 2005 banned retaliation against petitioners, retaliation continued.

China still condones the murder of new born female babies. They have a lot in common with The Taliban. They would publicly execute a female for infidelity, however the guy walks. China is a barbaric bunch of third rate producers of junk for the Walmart herd. Eighty percent of China is in dire poverty. And half you people are little more than a collection of wannabee American bashers. We will be top dog for a while. Get used to it, jealous losers.

Carolyn 1,
Our government here in China is hugely popular because they have and are showing compassion, don't compare them to the ones before Hu Jintao took over the reins. The quick and efficient reponse to our earthquake disaster was well publicized in your neck of the woolds, as was your pathetic response to the huricane Katrina disaster being plastered al over the news here. Our hosting of the 2008 Olympics also showed thee world that we've stepped out of the shadows and that we are a great nation with a huge amount of national pride. We also stay at home and keep our house in order while your sickening Administration is slaughtering innocents all over the world. Go hurl stones at those who deserve, yes, that would be you and your country men/women.

#11 Taz, The land of the gullible Walmart shoppers.
Thanks for buying all our goods buddy, we sincerely appreciate it, oh and by the way, Walmart in China is more expensive then for you and is a failing enterprise here, wonder why that is eh? Could it be that we the Chinese know how and where to shop?
Oh, and you're welcome for us helping you out financially time and again, it's over a trillion dollars now, but who's counting eh? By the time we've finished bailing you out it will surpass the ten trillion dollar national debt you're looking at now and the Chinese will own you, technically we already do.

Yes. China is soooooo wonderful to its citizens, and America is the evil empire. Yet, every year, millions, by legal or illegal means, want to come to America and be part of the American ideals and dreams.
Never has there been millions trying to legally or illegally get into China.

-it makes one wonder what kind of world we live in.
When a mindset creeps in and takes hold, that it is a public outrage for an American to photograph a terrorist, the horror of it still fills pages and pages of cyberspace-
but hardly mentioned is the horror of a woman who is buried and stoned to death for reporting she was rape.

Misogyny is fine, detaining terrorists is evil?

That's the core difference between China and the US. The US cannot and will not tolerate misogyny. China endorses it.

I am fully aware your intent is to spit on America and its ideals. Guess what, spit all you want, I am the luckiest of the luckiest because I get to live here, work here and raise my family here, and you don't. Yes! I gloat! Nanananana:))

And FYI, Viet Nam supported John McCain in the election:)

I'm a writer, so that in itself, gives me reason to be thankful I live here, free from censorship or persecution.

Until you have Freedom of the Press, and Freedom of speech, you are just an ant running around your ant hill working yourself to death trying to stay alive from starvation, before you are crushed by the boot that is always over you.

Congratulations, Einstein, we already work with Reporters without Borders:))

As for freedom of speech and freedom of the press, ask Mark Steyn why he lives in New Hampshire, USA instead of UK?

As for the US rating- oh boohoo.
This is a subject in great contention since 9-11. The press is cranky because it wants to print secrets and then not reveal sources of said secrets.
The media's says it's their duty to print secrets.
I think secrets should be secrets in the greater good of national security. It's my opinion the news could give a poop they just want to sell papers.

Versus China and Russia where the government is the press?? Yea, I'll take good ole #17 on the list every time, and thanks but no thanks, I will never step foot in China.

My mistake: US is #9, with a rating of 17
Countries scoring 0 to 30 are regarded as having “Free” media;
The UK is #10 with an 18 rating
