BA pilot flies on to shortlist for children's book prize

A BRITISH Airways pilot is among the shortlisted authors for the Waterstone's Children's Book Prize, announced today.
Rob Stevens wrote his debut novel, The Mapmaker's Monsters, in hotel rooms as he flew around the world. A 15th century swashbuckling adventure across the seas, the book was praised by Waterstone's for its suspense, humour and the wonderful way in which it plays with language.
The author, who has been flying for BA for 13 years, said: "I am incredibly excited and flattered to be shortlisted. To be honest I still can't quite believe it's happening. It's a huge honour."
He said the risky situations he conjured up in his writing were a perfect contrast to his pilot's job.
In its fifth year, the £5,000 cash Waterstone's Children's Book Prize was created to champion new and emerging children's writers.
