Bush exits stage right with no regret

Published Date: 13 January 2009
THE words were defiant, but his face contorted with the effort of defending one of the most controversial American presidencies of the modern era.
As George Bush took the last news conference of his eight years in office yesterday, he promised to "get off the stage", but not before he passionately and sometimes angrily responded to questions that covered every significant moment of his tenure as leader of the world's most powerful country.

He came into office as the most popular Republican since Ronald Reagan. He leaves scraping along below the disgraced Richard Nixon in the opinion polls.

Mr Bush refused to say whether the invasion of Iraq, based on the mistaken claim that it harboured chemical and nuclear weapons, had been a mistake, but he acknowledged: "Not finding weapons of mass destruction was a significant disappointment."

There was an admission that his victory declaration, two months into the war and made on an aircraft carrier under a banner reading "Mission Accomplished", had been an error. Five years, 4,000 US lives and nearly $1 trillion of military spending later, he admitted: "Clearly, putting 'Mission Accomplished' on an aircraft carrier was a mistake."

He said he had no idea when that war might end, adding: "The question is, in the long run, will this (Iraqi] democracy survive, and that's going to be a question for future presidents."

Appearing in front of the White House press corps for possibly the last time, Mr Bush initially appeared relaxed, as he joked with journalists.

Thanking them, he added that, at times, he did not like the stories they wrote about him. "Sometimes you misunderestimated me," he told them, recalling a celebrated "Bushism" from his early years in office.

But there were grimaces and pinched cheeks, raised eyebrows and uneven smiles, as Mr Bush insisted he did not feel unpopular, despite having the lowest domestic approval ratings of any post-war US president. "You know, most people I see, you know, when I'm moving around the country, for example, they're not angry," he said.

"I've been reading, you know, a lot about Abraham Lincoln during my presidency, and there was some pretty harsh discord when it came to the 16th president, just like there's been harsh discord for the 43rd president."

The Iraq war, torture at Abu Ghraib and the Guantanamo Bay prison camp have led to the popularity of the US falling to unprecedented levels around the world, but Mr Bush insisted the country's reputation was sound.

"I strongly disagree with the assessment that our moral standing has been damaged," he said. "People still understand America stands for freedom, that America is a country that provides such great hope."

Mr Bush repeated his belief that his administration had made progress in trying to seal a peace deal between Israel and the West Bank-based Palestinian authority, but he acknowledged that Barack Obama, the president-elect, would face stiff challenges in keeping up the effort to find peace. "Will this ever happen? I think it will," he said. "And I know we've advanced the process."

He also said he hoped the tone in Washington improves during the Obama administration, adding that "the rhetoric got out of control" during his presidency. "I hope that if people disagree with President Obama, they treat him with respect," Mr Bush said.

There was more defiance on the subject of 2005's Hurricane Katrina, which left New Orleans flooded. "Don't tell me the federal response was slow when there were 30,000 people pulled off roofs right after the storm passed," he said.

On the subject of the economy, Mr Bush insisted he had done a good job, despite leaving office with the US facing a deepening recession, record federal deficit and rising unemployment. "I inherited a recession, I am ending on a recession," he said. "In the meantime, there were 52 months of uninterrupted job growth."

He said that, while it might have increased his popularity had he accepted the Kyoto treaty on global warming or supported US membership of the International Criminal Court, in each case he was looking for practical ways to protect US interests and Americans' safety.

Mr Bush yesterday described North Korea as "still a problem" and Iran as "still dangerous". In his 2002 state of the union address, he called those countries and Iraq – then under Saddam Hussein – an "axis of evil" that had to be confronted. It came to epitomise what critics called his administration's "cowboy diplomacy".

And he predicted his successor, due to take office next Tuesday, will face the same kind of criticism he did.

Reflecting on his coming retirement, to a new house in Dallas, he said: "I don't see how I can get back home in Texas and look in the mirror and be proud of what I see if I allowed the loud voices, the loud critics, to prevent me from doing what I thought was necessary to protect this country."

He said he intended to stay out of Mr Obama's way, but he would not be sitting on his hands. I can't envision myself in a big straw hat and a Hawaiian shirt sitting on a beach somewhere," he joked, "particularly since I quit drinking."

Mr Bush will deliver a farewell address to the US on Thursday.

What he said

Asked about the damage done to America abroad by his policies, Mr Bush responded: "People still understand America stands for freedom, that America is a country that provides such great hope."

The facts

A recent BBC poll found the United States was viewed favourably by only 28 per cent of respondents in 34 countries,
and Mr Bush has been greeted by protesting crowds on most of his
overseas trips.

What he said

Bush said: "Most people I see – they're not angry. And you say, 'You never meet people who disagree?' It's not true. I've met a lot of people who don't agree with the decisions I make, but they have been civil in their discourse."

The facts

Shortly after 9/11, Mr Bush hit 90 per cent in popularity ratings, making him the most popular post-war president. CNN recently reported a 71 per cent disapproval rating, making him the most unpopular, a point below Richard Nixon.

What he said

Questioned over the federal government's response to Hurricane Katrina, Mr Bush said: "Don't tell me the federal response was slow when there were 30,000 people pulled off roofs right after the storm passed."

The facts

Federal authorities were blamed for failing to evacuate citizens of New Orleans before the 2005 flooding and mishandling a billion-dollar clean-up operation. Even now, many residents remain in temporary accommodation.

What he said

On the financial crisis: "Look, I inherited a recession, I'm ending on a recession. In the meantime, there were 52 months of uninterrupted job growth. And I defended tax cuts when I campaigned; I helped implement tax cuts when I was president."

The facts

Mr Bush's spending raised the federal deficit to record levels, partly to fund a tax cut that mostly benefited the top 1 per cent of earners, while government regulators failed to spot the coming financial meltdown late last year.

What he said

The 43rd president said that "not finding weapons of mass destruction was a significant disappointment". The accusation that Saddam Hussein had and was pursuing such weaponry was Bush's main initial justification for going to war.

The facts

The post-war consensus – supported evidentially – is that the Bush administration deliberately ignored intelligence indicating the Iraqi dictator had no such weapons. In this, Tony Blair's government was also complicit.

What he said

Bush said he believed administration had made progress in trying to seal a peace deal between Israel and the West Bankbased
Palestinian Authority. "Will this
ever happen? I think it will," he said. "And
I know we've advanced the process."

The facts

Gaza is on fire and the moderate West Bank-based administration of Abbas is viewed with suspicion by many Palestinians, not just Hamas supporters. Even if Abbas can deliver a peace deal, there is no guarantee it will be adhered to.

Nice one Shylock. Baron Peter and his ermine robe! If it wasn't so serious it would be laughable. Our "World saving" PM - a dolt in his very own right - brings back a twice resigned and utterly discredited political liability, elevates him to a lordship and gives him free rein......to sink the economy. This is the man who drank a glass of chinese milk, to show how poison-free and safe it was, and suffered a kidney stone 10 days later! And we're meant to have faith in him!? Now he is in the House of Lords I wonder how long until he exercises his "regulatory" powers - he is our Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform - to bring his pal Deripaska in beside him?!

Well, Chris Stephen, we'll certainly miss your unbased opinions about President Bush on these boards.

One basic point you have missed is that President Bush was the elected president of the United States...not the world.

The normal American could not care less what foreigners think about America or Americans.

The rest of the world spends its time with its hand out while it makes snide backhanded comments.

President Bush will be supremely happy to retire to his ranch in Texas and watch as Obama and the Democrats unfold their 3-ring scandal circus.

This is going to be quite a show.

Guess we won't be hearing a peep out of you about all the scandals that are already unfolding.

Bye-bye and good riddance to you too!

Obama is the one that will have to worry about Secret Service protection here and now.

Everyone is concerned about all the controversy Obama has created with the voter fraud and corrupt politics that are part of his administration.

I feel sorry for the Secret Service agents that will have to guard him.

He's just an ordinary man despite his supporters thinking he can walk on water.

No mention of how the credit crunch started Mr Stepheh.

Why would that be then?

Nothing to do with the fact that problems started under leftie/liberal Clinton.

1) Some american left wing acitivists decided that not lending to the poor, mostly blacks and Hipanics, was "discrimination".

2) These morons started threatening american banks with legal action - the arguement being it was some kind of 'infringement' on the poors huiman rights.

3) Some of them went as far a suggesting the term "master bedroom" in property guides was offensive to blacks.

THE REST IS, AS THEY SAY, HISTORY.

BTW
Considering Old Labour, ex-marxist, John Reid is now cashing in as a security advisor to a company working in Iraq I think the Labour supporting journalists who work in glass buildings shouldn't throw stones - unless they want the odd half-brick thrown back at them.

"Rember that just after 9/11 George Bush had one of the highest presedential ratings ever."

Yeah, that was about 10% of the way through his presidency before Iraq, financial meltdown, hurricane Katrina, Guantanamo Bay, doubling the national debt etc etc.

Meanwhile after 100% of his presidency he stands with the lowest rating ever. I wonder which one is more relevant?

Obama was actively involved with ACORN in Chicago before he ever ran for office.

You are talking through your hat with trying to distance Obama from the voter fraud that was perpetrated by his supporters.

All the whining about how President Bush "stole" an election became a reality with Obama.

This fraud is still going on with Franken.

The Democrats are going to be on the defense from here on out because you KNOW that you have done wrong.

Get used to it because it is your turn to be subjected to what you put President Bush through for 8 long years.

The Vietnam War escalated under Democrat Lyndon B Johnson and Republican Nixon got elected after running a campaign based on getting troops out of Vietnam.

The suggestion here is that Lyndon B Johnson (President from 1963 to 1969) was fairly popular, DURING THE VIETNAM WAR, while anti-war lefties rioted at the Democratic Convention in Chicago in '68.

I think Leftie Chris Stephen should check his left wing 'facts'.

Mr Stephens ability to edit out huge chunks of historical facts to create an alternative reality is now becoming legendary.

Here's a video clip of the 1968 riots during 'popular' Democrat LBJ's time in office.

I'm not entirely convinced Bush and Nixon were worse than lame duck Jimmy Carter.

Obama's administration is a Bill Clinton retread with many of the same clowns back in the White House.

If you want to know what to expect get Gary Aldrich's book "Unlimited Access."

Aldrich was one of two FBI agents assigned to the White House when the Clinton crew hit town.

The Clintons despised the Secret Service and the FBI because they all had so much to hide.

There were so many scandals that the "scandal of the week" became the expected situation.

Obama has started off with a huge cloud over his election due to the voter fraud, Ayers, the Blagojevich scandal, his illegal auntie and uncle from Kenya, etc. etc.

It all sounds like the same story except that Hillary Clinton will be Secretary of State instead of Co-President as she was with good ole Bill.

Hillary's national health care plan is back on the Democrat's agenda again...the one that was overwhelmingly refused by Americans before.

Then there were the scandals...Chinagate, Whitewatergate, Filegate, Monica Lewinsky, Vince Foster's death, Jennifer Flowers,...on and on.

Old Reid is now calling for a Sunday vote to ram through a land grab this weekend so that they can federalize vast wildlands so that there can be no drilling for oil or natural gas.

This administration is destined to be as bad as Reconstruction after the Civil War that impoverished the South. This time it could be the entire USA.

To this conclusion I come. The liberal press set out to destroy a President before
he had even had a chance to be President. They were successful. Although it killed one of them... Poor Dan Rather gave his life/career up to try and sink him before he could get re-elected, By lying his a** off. When Dan was found out, his bosses let him take the fall. Dan never expected them to sacrifice him, but they did. The press is too powerful and definitely biased liberal.
Question is, how are they going to hide this fact when they will be falling all over themselves to kiss Obama's Tail. Old George was not a bad President, he had bad press.

Hysterical that Blair will turn up today at the Whitehouse to recieve his reward for being a poodle.

Labour will of course try to distance themselves from Blair's lies and deceits leading up to the war. Brown will deny he ever saw the "Downing street memo" that proved America was fixing the intelligence around the policy.

Brown will also be reminded that it was he who bank-rolled Britain's participation in the Iraq invasion.
Just in case he does his usual and refuses to take responsibility for anything.

What a hideous group they make Bush, Blair and Brown.
Not a moral fibre between them.

An awful man with the blood of hundreds thousands on his hands.

He completely ignored the facts (as did the war criminal Blair) that there were no WMDs in Iraq, because, I imagine, his vice president's company needed the contracts that go with war.

Never mind all the dead, the maimed and the homeless and stateless. Never mind the misery and poverty in Jordon and Syria where they have fled.... Mission accomplished. Dick Cheney's company has done better than well.....

Good luck to Mr Obama. He'll sure need it with the mess this idiot has left him. I just hope that he doesn't let Gordon Brown anywhere near him.

Points for the Obam-maniacs to note:

1)The USA was labelled "The Great Satan" by the Ayatollah Komenni while Democrat Jimmy Carter was President.

So Carter was to blame for this negative image or are some muslims just so fanatical there is no pleasing them?

2)The air strikes on Iraq started under the Clinton - not a necon in site!

3)Considering Bush had only been President for 8 months at 9/11 its strange his foreign policy was to blame and not Clintons foreign policy.

According to those who hate Bush his foreign policy was up and running before Osama Bin Laden planned the attack.

SOME SCOTS ARE INCREDIBLY STUPID!

The non-idiots know that the attack was planned a long time before that and Bin Laden had already attacked the World Trade Center in May, 1993 - when Clinton was in charge.

So after 8 months in charge Obama will take reponsibiity for the USA's negative image amongst the Jihadists then, eh?

4) Over the decades the Palestinians have supported worse than Bush, for example:

a) Adolf Hitler - hated the USA.
b) Idi Amin
c) Saddam Hussein - hated the USA

NB
The suggestion that the Jihadists will now become friendly to westerners now that the Democrats are in charge is the sort of naive drivel we have come to expect from some Scottish politicians and journalists.

So Mr Salmond doesn't see the need to have armed police officers at Glasgow Airport now that the cause (Bush) of the terrorsim is gone then, eh????

I remember well the November night when I sat up to see who would win between Bush and Gore those eight years ago. As I remember it, I went to bed thinking that Gore had won thanks to a close victory in Florida, then run by Bush's brother.
Lo and behold next day it turned out that Bush had won.

Something about hanging chads and dimpled chads and pregnant chads.

Little surprise in hindsight that an administration that began so inauspiciously - not to say suspiciously - should have turned out to be such a disaster from start to finish.

Bush's legacy is clear - the worst 8 years of leadership in modern times, perhaps ever.

Obama's first act should be to teach democrats how to punch their voting tickets correctly.

First Virginian, some very intelligent Texans I know are thrilled to bits that George is no longer President. And you'll remember that they've known him longer than you as he was Governor of Texas previously where he couldn't, as they said, really do too much damage.

Mr Bush should never be forgiven for, amongst other things, the lies he told about the war that has killed goodness knows how many of his very own soldiers, as well as soldiers from other countries, a war that should never have been started. Do you remember who it was who helped Saddam Hussein into power?

Bush Junior's biggest problem is that he wanted to show his Daddy that he could do it, and all he's done is make the President of the USA a laughing-stock. I heard him yesterday saying something about his country "America", doesn't he even know that there are many other countries on the (2) continents of America? Does he even know that there are two continents that have America in their name?

Most real Americans are grateful to GWB for keeping us safe for the past 7 years and care not a whit about so-called 'world' opinion.

We fear for the future of our country with Obama in office as we do not believe he will keep us safe. We also know that the 'world' will be begging for our help in the future when they are faced with radical Islamist attacks....but don't count on it with the Left in power. They can protect no one.

Where to begin.....

I forced myself to watch the last lie-fest of GWB last night, if only to hear what I knew would be pathetic begging for mercy clothed in arrogant "west Texas bravado." I was not disappointed. For the whole time on the podium, the worst president in the world smirked, simpered, blustered, and whined his way through a press conference that will surely stand out as one of his worst, if only because at the very end of it all, he proved unequivocally that he hasn't a clue....

The reason he has no regrets is because he is simply incapable of realizing all the grief, heartache, torture, and money he has cost the average citizens in the USA and other countries in the world who counted on him to act as a true leader and not a mere toady of Big Oil, Big Pharmaceuticals, and anything else Big that happened to need him....

I figure that his college education, including a degree at Yale and an MBA at Harvard, would have taught him a little something about economics, world geography (oh, I forgot, I studied that in elementary and high school without a college degree), and history. He claims history will smile kindly upon his efforts, but only if history is rewritten, and since his little brother Neil is in cahoots with McGraw-Hill and other publishers, that just might happen...

We as a people (and all of us around the world) must continue to watch the way Bush and his minions (and his big boss, Cheney) continue to say they did this or that for this or that reason, when we know that is not how it originally happened. Soon, he will try to have us believe that "the surge" was a good idea (oops! already doing that), that Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with 9/11 and he never thought so (oops! again), and that the weapons of mass destruction were never found and, obviously, did not get hidden by the wily Iraqis (oops! and just last night, too!!!)

Some say we will miss the malpropisms and stupid remarks and hilarious misreadings of his written sp

speeches, but I for one look forward to Barack Obama's level-headed, clear language and mannered delivery. Last night was a mawkish display of misplaced self-indulgence and self-pity rolled into one - extremely yuck-making....Had I been seeing Bushie for the first time, I would have thought how actually scared and defensive he looked, but having seen him many times on the TV and in newsclips, I realize that is his natural aura - posturing bravado whilst feeling put upon...Really!!! We had to put up with this for eight years, and now we will have to dig ourselves out of a financial and moral morass....

When I think that Bush had the gall to say last night that he was under pressure to usurp our Constitutional rights by illegal wiretapping and torture, I wanted to be sick. His only answer then, to terrorism, is suborning perjury by his then-Attorney General and attacking the US population by making us less safe at the hands of our own elected officials???

One last thought: going in last night, Bush had received word (indeed, the journalists all knew it too) that there will not be another attack on US soil until the terrorists can get a really, really big target to far outweigh the impact of 9/11. Actually, this has always been the case, since it is a fact that if the terrorists really want to hit big, they will, and we will probably not be able to stop it, unless our government is paying attention - not ignoring memos, for example (gotcha, Condi!!) Bush has not protected us - the terrorists have given us all a "resting period," so to speak, until they can get all their duckies in a row again. And even if Barack Obama's presidency includes a terrorist attack - heaven forbid, but it could happen - then it will still only be Bush 1, Obama 1. Let us not forget that 9/11 happened on Bush's watch, no matter how many times he will try to divert us to other subjects. Bush and his minions let that one happen, people!!!

Bush inherited a recession from Clinton and grew the economy to record highs despite 9-11 and a constant attack from the far left wing socialist press that will never give him credit for any of the good things he has done.

This is the same press that said Palin was unqualified yet says Obama and Al Franken are qualified.

Bush will be remembered as a great President, as we all know he did a great job. It’s a shame the dems took over the house in January 2007 and it has been falling apart ever since.

And even IF it were true that Georgie "inherited" a recession (which it isn't), then why have we got one now, AGAIN (which it isn't AGAIN, BUT FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OVER 20 YEARS). Bush said last night that it isn't so much the crisis you experience but the way you deal with it (OOPS! Georgie Stupid, stumped by his own words, hoisted on his own lanyard). The great George Bush, with all his daddy-bought diplomas in business admin, told us just a few short weeks ago that our economy was sound and that we are the greatest country in the world (it is not, and the latter is debatable, since we have stooped to torture and illegalities, just like a banana republic....) HE DIDN'T SEE THE RECESSION COMING, although many of us peons did and started lowering our economic expectations. His answer to every query was "BUY...HOME OWNERSHIP...SHOP!"

Mere words cannot express my contempt for the dolt who now occupies the White House. Maybe he can arrange for some other crisis so he won't have to leave...He certainly won't be comfortable just riding around on his dirt bike (no Scottish police to run over in the USA!)

I find it hard to believe that there are some people posting here from the US who have already condemned Obama before he takes the hot seat.
Even if he is doomed to fail, you guys need to take a good hard look at the standards for failure set by the sainted Mr Bush. To bring ruin to the entire world financial system due to his cack handed management of the economy, his "light touch" (i.e.no) regulation, and the disasterous appointment of Paulson is a feat no other president will ever hope to equal. He leaves office with the national debt at levels no-one thought possible, and the legacy to the taxpayer will be felt for many decades to come.
On foreign policy, lord knows what the plan was with Saddam and Iraq, but full marks for removing the one obstacle to Iranian expansionism that could yet be the catalyst for a regional nuclear war. Bonus points for removing a murderous dictator (that was spawned and supported by the USA in the good old days) then unleashing an insurgency in Iraq that actually made the situation worse for the ordinary Iraqi - and acted as a perfect recruiting ground for the disillusioned jihadists across the middle east.
Yes Obama might fail, but, he'll never take failure to the dizzying heights achieved by Dubya.

Logic dictates Obama will not fail-- because we can only go up from here. The problem lies in when things get good again-- the sick idiots, aka: republican party, will begin their lies once again. And unfortunately, Americans are SO under-educated, they will again believe those lies.

Very sad-- and unfortunately, very true.

Bush must go down as the most appalling leader in the history of modern politics. But when the book on his many failings is written, I do hope that they mention the bad influences like his sickening father, the ghastly Cheyne and the repulsive Rumsfeld. These men held a lot of power and each of them ensured that their agendas were realised through the Bush presidency, the second of which, was illegal.
I also hope that the book describes Bush and his cronies as war mongering terror chiefs. Men who designed a war through an attack on home soil without batting an eyelid. Men who blamed Osama Bin Laden for the attack but who did everything in their power to go after Saddam instead.
It was after all, Saddam who was the biggest enemy, because whilst Bin Laden was merely murdering Americans, Saddam was selling oil in Reubels, thus rendering the dollar useless.
I personally hope that Bush Snr, Bush Jnr, Rumsfeld and Cheyne suffer in death, time will tell.
In terms of what we can look forward to - Well there is a man called Obama who I believe will be an inspiration not only to America and her people, but to the world at large.
There will be many looking to hurt him, there will be many looking to ruin his legacy, but lets hope there will be more willing him to do well.
The American people have spoken and they said that men like Bush will not be tolerated.

I suppose we are all entitled to our opinions - But we must remember that all white Americans are Europeans, just as all black Americans are African.
Europe is the motherland, the place where innovation, invention and creation began.
Socrates,Plato,Pytahgoras,Shakespeare,Newton,Da Vinci,Einstein,Hawkins,Brunell,Watt,Flemming,Bell,Dickens,Columbus and the rest.
Without Europe, America does not exist, without America, Europe already existed.
America is a nice place, I have visited. Poverty and hicksville exists in abundance, so does extreme wealth, I guess the same is true of most places. The bible belt and its guns, homophobic views, racist tendencies and intollerance was interesting to say the least.
I guess America is New York, Chicago, Los Angelis, San Francisco and Boston - there isnt much else to write home about.
America is probably the most disliked nation on the planet, I cant say many more nations are as hated.
Personally I dont hate America or Americans, I pity them, not all of them, just those who know nothing. 8% of 300 million have passports and 4% of them are soldiers who came from Hicksville because their government needed to slaughter some of them for reasons of power in a bankrupt state - America reminds me of the man who INHERITED the world and then got wreckless in panic at the thought of losing it to those who were earning their own new world.

St. Caledonia... don't pity Americans.. there are people coming from all walks of life.. all countries who are trying to come here legally, and Illegally..
So, the America I know is nothing like the America you profess.

Tell you what, next time there is a natural disaster, ask your gov't to NOT ask us for our help and aid.

Then you will have nothing to carp about.

BDS is alive and well on Scotsman!! It's not going to change.. at all.. the hatred for him, and America is stuck in your craw.
It doesn't matter to me, I am but one person... and personally I don't care what you think of americans, our Presidents or anything about us..

You can all go back to sitting on your hands, then wring them.. you face worse than we ever will. You have a growing Radical Islamic population that must be worrying all of you, Blame Bush for that too..the UK is faced with prospect of Sharia law, and you can insult the radical Islamists by putting a picture of a puppy in a window.
Must be fun to live where you are. The protests in the streets calling for beheadings when cartoons are printed.. calls for death and deaths of directors, producers who dare to say something that doesn't meet with radical Islamic approval..
You talk about us losing our rights!! Have fun!!

We Protestant Christians need to remember a few verses from the Bible regarding our elected officials...President Bush as well as President-elect Obama as soon as he becomes President.

Romans 13:1-3 reads:

"1-Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God."

"2-Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves."

"3-For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same."

A Christian's duty to authorities continues in verses 13:6-8:

"6-For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God's ministers attending continually to this very thing."

"7-Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor."

"8-Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law."

In the "heat of battle" during this election, it appears that we have forgotten these words.

Since this post is directed to Christians, there is no need for any others to comment.

Christian conduct regarding rulers are found also in 1Peter 2:13-17:

"13-Therefore submit yourselves to every institution of man for the Lord's sake, whether to the king as supreme,"

"14-or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good."

"15-For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men--"

"16-as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God."

"17-Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king."

Many other verses can be found that instruct American Christians as to how to rightly conduct themselves in regard to our public officials.

You might care to inform the contributors where the USA were and their role right up to 1941?
Why were US ships still supplying Nazi Germany with oil

And who were partly financing Hitler's Nazi's in the early 1930s?
And just to deal with some pernicious events taking place in Iraq during the 1980s involving the USA!

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

LAW ENFORCEMENT

I was arrested in Kennebunkport, Maine, in 1976 for driving under the influence of alcohol. I pled guilty, paid a fine, and had my driver's license suspended for 30 days. My Texas driving record has been "lost" and is not available.

MILITARY

I joined the Texas Air National Guard and went AWOL.
I refused to take a drug test or answer any questions about my drug use.
By joining the Texas Air National Guard, I was able to avoid combat duty in Vietnam.

COLLEGE

I graduated from Yale University with a low C average. I was a cheerleader.

PAST WORK EXPERIENCE

I ran for U.S. Congress and lost. I began my career in the oil business in Midland, Texas, in 1975. I bought an oil company, but couldn't find any oil in Texas. The company went bankrupt shortly after I sold all my stock.

I bought the Texas Rangers baseball team in a sweetheart deal that took land using taxpayer money. With the help of my father and our friends in the oil industry, including Enron CEO Ken Lay, I was elected Governor of Texas.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS GOVERNOR OF TEXAS

I changed Texas pollution laws to favor power and oil companies, making Texas the most polluted state in the Union. During my tenure, Houston replaced Los Angeles as the most smog-ridden city in America. I cut taxes and bankrupted the Texas treasury to the tune of billions in borrowed money.
I set the record for the most executions by any governor in American history. With the help of my brother, the governor of Florida, and my father's appointments to the Supreme Court, I became President after losing by over 500,000 votes.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS PRESIDENT

I am the first President in U.S. history to enter office with a criminal record. I invaded and occupied two countries at a continuing cost of over one billion dollars per week. I spent the U.S. surplus and effectively bankrupted the U.S. Treasury. I shattered the record for the largest annual deficit in U.S. history. I set an economic record for most private bankruptcies filed in any 12-month period. I set the all-time record for most foreclosures in a 12-month period. I set the all-time record for the biggest drop in the history of the U.S. stock market.

In my first year in office, over 2 million Americans lost their jobs and that trend continues every month.

I'm proud that the members of my cabinet are the richest of any administration in U.S. history. My "poorest millionaire," Condoleeza Rice, had a Chevron oil tanker named after her. I set the record for most campaign fund-raising trips by a U.S. President. I am the all-time U.S. and world record-holder for receiving the most corporate campaign donations. My
largest lifetime campaign contributor, and one of my best friends, Kenneth Lay, presided over the largest corporate bankruptcy fraud in U.S. History, Enron.

My political party used Enron private jets and corporate attorneys to assure my success with the U.S. Supreme Court during my election decision. I have protected my friends at Enron and Halliburton against investigation or prosecution. More time and
money was spent investigating the Monica Lewinsky affair than has been spent investigating one of the biggest corporate rip-offs in history.

I presided over the biggest energy crisis in U.S. history and refused to intervene when corruption involving the oil
industry was revealed. I presided over the highest gasoline prices in US. history. I changed the U.S. policy to allow convicted criminals to be awarded government contracts. I appointed more convicted criminals to administration th

industry was revealed. I presided over the highest gasoline prices in US. history. I changed the U.S. policy to allow convicted criminals to be awarded government contracts. I appointed more convicted criminals to administration than any President in U.S. history. I created the Ministry of Homeland Security, the largest bureaucracy in the history of the United States government.

I've broken more international treaties than any President in U.S. history. I am the first President in U.S. history to have the United Nations remove the U.S. from the Human Rights Commission. I withdrew the U.S. from the World Court of Law. I refused to allow inspectors access to U.S. "prisoners of war" detainees and thereby have refused to abide by the Geneva Convention. I am the first President in history to refuse United Nations election inspectors (during the 2002 U.S. election). I set the record for
fewest numbers of press conferences of any President since the advent of television. I set the all-time record for most days on vacation in any one-year period. After taking off the entire month of August, I presided over the worst security failure in U.S. history. I garnered the most sympathy for the U.S. after the World Trade Center attacks and less than a year later made the
U.S. the most hated country in the world, the largest failure of diplomacy in world history.

I have set the all-time record for most people worldwide to simultaneously protest me in public venues (15 million people), shattering the record for protests against any person in the history of mankind.

I am the first President in U.S. history to order an unprovoked, pre-emptive attack and the military occupation of a sovereign nation. I did so against the will of the United Nations, the majority of U.S. citizens, and the world community. I have cut health care benefits for war veterans and support a cut in duty benefits for active duty troops and their families-in-wartime. In my State of the

I did so against the will of the United Nations, the majority of U.S. citizens, and the world community. I have cut health care benefits for war veterans and support a cut in duty benefits for active duty troops and their families-in-wartime. In my State of the Union Address, I lied about our reasons for attacking Iraq and then blamed the lies on our British friends. I am the first President in history to have a majority of Europeans (71%) view my presidency as the biggest threat to world peace and security. I am
supporting development of a nuclear "Tactical Bunker Buster," a WMD. I have so far failed to fulfill my pledge to bring Osama Bin Laden [sic] to justice.

RECORDS AND REFERENCES

All records of my tenure as governor of Texas are now in my father's library, sealed and unavailable for public view. All records of SEC investigations into my insider trading and my bankrupt companies are sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public view. All records or minutes from meetings that I, or my Vice-President, attended regarding public energy policy are sealed in secrecy and unavailable for public review.

I am a member of the Republican Party.

All that you have done is allowed time for the real problem to assemble weapons, networks, and more nuts to help their cause.

#127 Oh well, no need to worry if you are safe in your "gated" community. Safe from the real U.S. and safe from the rest of the world. Have you never wondered why your Government is so unpopular around the world?

We are 'safe' because we have worked hard to make that a reality. We don't sit back and wait for the rest of the world to fight our battles for us. We care nothing for 'popularity', as we know from past experience that all the 'world' does is preen and criticize and wait for the U.S. to do the heavy lifting.

Another Biblical passage regarding Christian conduct toward authorities is from 1 Timothy 2:1-3:

"1-Therefore, I [Paul] exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men,"

"2-for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence."

"3-For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,"

Finally, Paul says in Titus 3:1-5a:

"1-Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work,"

"2-to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men."

"3-For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another."

"4-But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared,"

"5-not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us,"

If each one of us that call ourselves Christian heeds these words, there would be a good deal less contention in the world and a great deal more real "peace."

Therefore, Christians are called on to pray for and be thankful for the service of President Bush and those in his administration who served faithfully these long and difficult eight years.

Christians also need to pray for the incoming Obama administration that they will be guided in all that is right and enabled to serve the United States according to the law of the land, the Constitution.

Hmmm, that's a peculiar very uninformed statement.
Maybe America is a bunch of poverty stricken hicks (your description- not mine), but this country did something Scotland never accomplished and can''t accomplish- it's called sovereignty. Freedom from the crown. America dimwits managed to write, sign and declare a Declaration of Independence from England, and succeeded in gaining our freedom, at great personal risk. I don't see Scotland being able free itself, so until you've done it, stop blabbering about freedom

Bush: Hi, That you Laura? I will go see the lawyer Monday to close on the Dallas house… I ..

Olmert: This is Ehud Olmert, President of Israel

Bush: Yo, Wassup Ollie?

Olmert: Mr. President, I’m just calling to thank you for all you have done to support us in our war on Hammas…

Bush: Hey, me? I haven’t done anything?

Olmert: Exactly.

Bush: I hear you’re giving that Hezbolla bunch a pounding again, great job!

Olmert: It is the Hammas this time, Mr. President. We learned from the last time that you need to have your ground troops ready to go in early.

Bush: You said it. The best defense is a great offense, right?

Olmert: You are so right, Mr. President.

Bush: Do you want me to send Condi over there like last time, so it looks like we’re doin’ somethin?

Olmert: That won’t be necessary Mr. President; we will come to an agreement on Monday January 19 at 5:30pm local time.

Bush: Oh… that’s my last day as President, I think. What a coincidence.

Olmert: This will be the last time we talk as Presidents, no?

Bush: I guess so. I’ll be fixing up some BBQ when I go up to Dallas and keeping an eye out on the new Presidential Library getting built… Laura says she’ll show me some books in it one day...

Olmert: Well Thanks again Mr. President for the white phosphorous artillery shells and bombs. Oi! Do they make a fire … did you see that UN food store go up? Talk about a blaze… And I understand you did not have time to get us the 100 bunker buster bombs we wanted for Iran, we just ran out of time… But thank Mr. Cheney for trying.

Bush: Oh, yeh… Chainman tried to talk me into that deal, but you know what, I had to turn him down. I finally realized that my Dick is even more dangerous than Clinton’s.

… Hey, gotta run – need to cut back that pesky brush again on the north pasture….. Heck of a job, Ollie….
