Conservatives slam SNP over prisons row

Tories today angrily rounded on the SNP in a row over prison overcrowding.
The Nationalists claimed a Tory quest for spare buildings to house prisoners had unearthed a children's development centre, among other locations.

But the Tories hit back, accusing the SNP of selectively quoting from a speech by their leader Annab
el Goldie.

This made clear that Ms Goldie was looking only for buildings where public safety will not be compromised, said Tory justice spokesman Bill Aitken.

"For the SNP to distort something so completely is beyond reprehensible and it raises serious questions about their capacity for government, when instead of presenting ideas of their own they are forced to misrepresent the ideas of others," he said.

The row began when the SNP ridiculed Tory suggestions that unused NHS properties may be converted into prison space.

The suggestions relied on converting a children's centre in Broughty Ferry or a building in the middle of Pitlochry, said the SNP.
These premises had been named by justice secretary Kenny MacAskill in a letter to SNP MSP Angela Constance.

He told her that after an inquiry by Bill Aitken, government officials asked health boards if they had any property that can be used for this.

"Eleven of the 14 NHS boards responded saying there was no space available," said the minister.

"NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde identified Merchiston Hospital; NHS Ayrshire and Arran identified Holmhead Hospital; and NHS Tayside identified Irvine Memorial Hospital and Pitlochry and Armitstead Child Development Centre, Broughty Ferry.

"The latter three boards all stated that it would be a significant challenge and impractical to use their facilities as a holding facility for prisoners."

Ms Constance said: "The Tories big idea is in tatters.

"There are no suitable buildings and there is no Conservative policy on prisons.

"The only buildings the Conservatives could find are in the middle of Broughty Ferry and Pitlochry or a hospital in Cumnock currently housing a day care centre.

"It is no surprise we have heard nothing more of Ms Goldie's flagship policy."

And the SNP's Stewart Hosie said: "This ridiculous suggestion exposes the Conservatives' continued failure as a party in Scotland.

"There will be outrage that the Conservatives think a children's centre in the middle of a residential district is suitable for a prison.

"The SNP is taking a responsible approach to Scotland's justice system with the first of three new prisons opening last month. Real reform of the criminal justice system is under way."

But Mr Aitken insisted: "The SNP's contingency plans for an emergency hitting Scotland's prisons amount to nothing more than a casual release of prisoners to walk our streets.

"The SNP Government has simply not applied its minds to finding additional facilities, whereas I have been made aware of at least two such facilities – one at Machrahanish in Campbeltown, where the Ministry of Defence are at present seeking to sell the former RAF buildings, and the other at Edzell in Angus.

"I am not saying that these provide the final answer but it was a search worth undertaking."

What the chuff did Macrahanish or Edzell do to deserve prisons? Imagine the length of time it would take for prisoners families to get from say the Central belt to Macrahanish.

You really get the feeling that Mr Aitken is one of these chaps who proudly proclaims that he would pull the switch on the electric chair. Strange wee man.

Is it just me or is it becoming patently obvious that the Tories have the ear of the editor on the Scotsman?

I read on another blog a prediction that the Scottish media would try to redress the balance caused by Labour's gaffe over the Forth Bridge funding.

Stories like this one were exactly what the poster was referring to. The poster mentioned The Herald who also have one based around Labour MSP Michael Macmahon's grandmother waiting 8 hours for a hospital bed.

This poster might be onto something, I will watch the Scottish press over this next week or so to see if I can spot such articles.

Listening to Tory Legal bod Bill Aitken making a very strong case for retaining the Age of Criminal Responsibility at 8 on the grounds that children of that age know perfectly well what they are doing, know right from wrong, know Friday follows Thursday etc he should now await a call from Peter Thatchel asking him to publicly support his campaign for lowering the Age of Consent to 14 (or even 12) on the same grounds.

What would you give to be a fly on the wall as Bill goes bright purple as he builds up to a 'friendly' rejection of Mr Thatchel's arguments on the grounds of insanity....Thatchels of course. :)

It has become obvious for a while now, that no paper must report anything unless it supports the gnats policies, not comment on anything unless it supports the gnats position, not publish anything unless it is cleared by gnat central command and szar salmond.
Posters on this site and similar sites must comply with gnat central command and only congratulate them on great policies, only they are fit for government as the whole of scotland supports them and westminster is evil and is holding them back in thier quest for world dominance.
We should bow down our heads now and agree to follow the beliefs of the gnat little yellow book and forever thank and only pray to the one true god salmond.

Ha HA... I'd like to see the local Tories reaction to the idea of using the Broughty Ferry site as a prison. It's right next to posh people's houses.... Bad idea for the local Tory councillor.
