Published Date: 16 July 2008
SCOTTISH Tory leader Annabel Goldie today donned her training gear for an early morning workout on the Glasgow east by-election campaign trail.
She was joined by party health spokeswoman Mary Scanlon and Tory candidate Davena Rankin for a 45-minute "stretch and tone" session at a local leisure centre.

"We think it's important that we all recognise what we can do ourselves in very simple ways to try and help our health," Miss Goldie said.

The Tory leader said she also likes cycling while Mrs Scanlon goes hillwalking. Tory UK leader David Cameron recently hit the headlines when he called for less sensitivity about identifying factors such as exercise and diet in the growing obesity problem.

Miss Goldie said: "I'm the first to hold my hands up and say I'm overweight. There's only one person to blame for that – me".

But she added: "I think already in Scotland people are looking very carefully at the kind of lives they lead. They are now trying to make positive decisions to have healthier lives".

Mrs Scanlon said there was a need to make labels on food less confusing and make it easier for people to buy more nutritional foods.

Regarding Davena Rankin's election campaign, Miss Goldie said: "An overwhelming majority of people she meets don't want independence but associate Labour with failure.

"They see the Conservatives as a vibrant, dynamic, political force in Scotland," she claimed.

"The Conservatives are closing the gap and the impression we're getting on the doorsteps is that people also understand what we are doing in Scotland.

"This includes leading the debate at Holyrood on securing more police officers on the streets, a national drugs strategy and business rate cuts.

Miss Rankin had encountered many Labour voters who do not intend to switch next week but said: "We've come across equal numbers of lifelong Labour supporters who are saying they're going to vote Tory for the first time on the 24th.

"People are becoming disillusioned with Labour and they're saying 'let's give the Tories a chance'."

The by-election to be held next Thursday, came about after Labour's David Marshall stood down due to ill-health.

Labour is defending a 13,500 majority in the seat over the SNP.

She is a good leader for the Tories in Scotland; a straight-talking battleaxe.

There's more chance of Hitler being found alive and well in Mosleys' bedroom, than a Tory winning this by-election. They will be lucky if they save their deposit.

'UNFIT FOR GOVERNMENT' is the obvious headline.

Still nothing from Das Schottishman about the big story regarding Labour faking an endorsement from a 93 year old war vet. You know the man who is in fact 67 and her seconder with her candidate papers.

Another unionist cover-up?

I loathe the Tories and most of what they stand for, but I like Annabel Goldie. She says it like she feels it, and she's worthy of respect.

In parliament I've watched her ask sensible questions and get sensible answers. (And this is what we pay their salaries for.) She criticises the government and makes her points, but she uses her time effectively. No grandstanding. This is stark contrast to the buffoon from the Labour Party who always looked like a little girl whose dolly had been taken off her by a big boy.

Annabel Goldie is clever enough to understand a minority government, and what that means. (Of course it helps that she never expected and probably doesn't expect in future to be First Minister.)

With some luck she will be leader of the main opposition next time round, and then perhaps we can get on with the business of the parliament being the running of our country instead of the ego of the Labour party.

Tris,

As an afterthought, Cameron would do well to watch Annabel Goldie, and learn.

Was it an "out-of-step" class?

Thatcher would be spinning in her grave.

I agree, we could do alot worse than having Ms Goldie in a more prominent role. Ok, many do not like the Tories but there is something to be said for someone who does not appear to have a hidden agenda and who comes across as honest and sensible and prepared to debate the issues that matter.
I have said it before here but I think a SNP/Tory coelition (decide in advance that the Independence vote is in 5/10 years or whenever in the future) has the potential to do some real good up here - at worst it would make that sham of a Labour party refocus their energy into doing something constructive.

Who was it that said to her give the Tories a chance?
Gordon Broon and his lying, corrupt New Labour Party?
Where has she been for the past eighteen years?
I wonder if she would like me to repeat what the 'Great man Churchill once said off this noble, sleazy, lying and corrupt shower that he despised so vehemently, in his younger days!

Say what you like but I would prefer Annabel Goldie's mental abilities that keeps her on her toes to those of Margaret Curran's anytime. Pity she is not the Liebor candidate.

Don't forget this is Tory spin, and Goldielocks just has to toe the party line whether she likes it or not.
Some little spin docter thought this up for the photo-shoot - she probably hated every second of it.
Remember Thatcher !!!

And your point is?
Scotland needs a change of scene and also needs to get over the mindset that the Tories would automatically be bad for Scotland - these people are Scottish and want what is best for Scotland. Thatcher was a generation ago we need to move on.

What Scotland needs is good politicians and there seem very few of them around here in Holyrood, Ms Goldie appears to be one of the few, Tory or not.

#4 People have come to expect lies from the Liebour party I just can't believe so many people in the East end of Glasgow are stupid enough to believe them. Even with lies as blatant as this it appears there are still some people who will vote 4 them . I can see why The Barras and Paddys market are so popular with all the gullible fools surrounding the area, It's con man heaven.

Bejesus - Oor Anna in a leotard - gulp.

Leotard or no, she's the same wan who browbeated Shrek, and in doing so has supplied the backbone to the Executive's programme - a cut in business rates, and, ahem, 1,000 extra/additional/newly recruited/mair/not moved from desk jobs/defo new, honest

on our streets.

Without these, the Executive's programme is tres flyweight.

I agree with you on Annabels performance in parliament.I think its worth noting that the First Minister treats all opposition MSPs with respect when they ask sensible questions. Those who ask stupid questions and waste the parliaments time get rougher treatment. This is why Annabel gets on far better than The Disgraced Alexander(Wendy)ever did.Her conduct in parliament does her credit so far,but I'll reserve judgement until I see if she recognises the wishes of the Scottish people and supports the referendum bill.
23

Miss H,

A lot can be forgiven for that - though not forgotten.

10 out of 10 Annabel

You have to hand it to her , she really is not afraid of much at all.

What a contrast to Labours flip flops, missing candidates, disappearing war heroes and resigning leaders.

Part of me is saddened that you are up against Alex Salmond.

If only she were not conservative and unionist I might vote for her.
26

Tris,

It seems to me Annabel, if you're reading this, that you'd be a welcome convert to the Nationalst cause.

It's hard to imagine you belong to the same party as the odious Thatcher.

Annabel Goldie has more statesmanship in her little finger than most of the SNP and New Labour MSPs put together. She has dignity and a sense of humour, a command of intelligent language and an educated outlook regarding the broad picture of Scottish and British politics. She does not resort to insult or rudeness, bluster and prevarication, regarding the job in hand. Hers is a shining example that I wish the common heard (deliberate spelling) in our parliament would follow when they are addressing the assembly. We would be better off without the idiot element who do most of the crass performing in Holyrood. I'm a floating voter who cares about the international scene and how Scotland is viewed by the rest of the world. I can hardly bring myself to watch a live transmission of parliamentary debate, it is usually too embarrassing!

Phew! I feel much better for that!

What's this? Do I detect a hint of personal image-bashing on this thread? "Shrek"? "Annabel in a leotard"? Hands up - right now - the serious contributor who thinks that remarks such as these have any part to play in rational, reasoned, and downright GROWN-UP debate on the future of this Nation of ours. Shame on you if you were honest enough to put your hands up.....ETERNAL SHAME if you subscribe to such idiocy, but DIDN'T put your hand up. SCOTLAND DESERVES BETTER.

29 It's a bit of an accident-prone campaign though isn't it? Pictures getting mixed up, sending begging letters to the SNP candidate and a Labour candidate who can't remember where she lives.

I heard that Lesley Quinn had resigned. Has anyone replaced her?

'Miss Rankin had encountered many Labour voters who do not intend to switch next week but said: "We've come across equal numbers of lifelong Labour supporters who are saying they're going to vote Tory for the first time on the 24th.'

Really? She's came across as many tory as labour voters in this constituency? Unless she's only bothered to visit her local constituency party office, this can't possibly be true- in other words a blatant lie.

So it was a simple mistake, a mix-up.

Does no one in John Smith House read their own web site and see the mistake?

Who proof read it?

aaahhhhhhhh

The monkey in the red jacket with the red rosette, who was in fact the second choice to the the Slab candidate after Councillor Ryan, before he was rescued by the Animal Liberation Front.

or

The SNP have infiltrated Slab Central and are playing Psy-ops?

Naaah, they are awe Nupties and couldn't run a proverbial wee wee up in a brewery, although they could collect the entry money.

I hope that none of youse actually vote Tory, even if you are a Tory.
Vote SNP and get New Labour out!

p.s. Is it because poor areas vote Labour that they are poor, or is it that they are poor because they vote Labour?

If Easterhouse votes Labour this time, the other parties will never forgive them.
It may be bad now............But it can only get worse.

Between the lines,

Tris Dundee : "I loathe the Tories and most of what they stand for..."

I loathe narrow-minded idiots who have blind faith in corrupt socialist dogma and who can't respect the rights of individuals who like to do things for themselves. Presumably you'll vote for Bongo the Chimp if Scottish Labour put him up as a candidate at the next election in your constituency (because every generation in your family has always voted Labour, of course)?

Now, Paisley Pete, do not give away the unionist strategy of the "bung" culture. We unionists invented it and hold the copyright.

NO moron. Where did you get that idea from?

I vote SNP.

I loathe the Labour party. I hate Gordon Brown. I wouldn't p[ut Dez Browne out if he were on fire. I deteste Harry Harperson, and Alistair Darling makes me want to vomit. As for McChattering and wee Dougie.... don't get me started.

You can't comment on it. Their being given the benefit of the doubt. Wonder if the SNP would have been given the same lattitude?

Fully agree with #5
Anabel Goldie has been a more effective opposition leader that the two who had been in 'charge' of Labour and the Libdems since last year.
The Tories dont have a cats chance in Glasgow East and the Tories themselves have admited this, but at least Anabel Goldie is not letting that spoil her hustings campaign. Allthough having watched the above 'photo' opportunity on TV yesterday, would respectfully suggest to her that she needs to 'find the time' and get more excercise, so that the next time she takes part in another 'photo oppportunity' she isnt as out of breath as she evidently was. Much respect to the lady for puting herself up for these. last time out during the May elections it was in wall climbing kit, so obviously loves a challenge!

From the Labour breifing 'Labour said: "We got two names and pictures transposed and as soon as we were alerted to it we corrected it – it was a simple mistake.'
Really?
It may be understandable that pictures were mixed up, but names as well?
I suspect this isnt the end of it as the picture of John Hipson, the OAP in the sheltered housing, is not 93 (doesnt even look it) he is actually 88. He may have been in the Deserts Rats (much respect if he was), but have a problem with someone from the Desert Rats also fighting with the partisans in Yugoslavia (Im hoping a former Desert Rat can shine some light on this) As Ive not come accross anything historically that they did. After the Desrt campaign in North Africa, they moved on to Italy and also onto France

Well said!

Met the Goldie on Friday in Tollcross Road. She jumped out of a car, shock hands with couple of preople who said were Tories, jumped back in car, drove off so needs the exercise.

The Former Mr. Angry,

Perth 17/07/2008 21:24:05
It's unfair - she hit the gym, but it couldn't hit back. Formidable formation exercising for one.

To be fair, Annabel is one of the few opposition politicians in Scotland who has conviction, integrity, speaks with intelligence and humour when it's appropriate and hs a good grasp of the legalities and political priorities. She also happens to be fairly polite and well-mannered unlike some of the donkeys who have presented themselves. Being a Conservative can be a bit of a handicap in Scotland, but worth a second look in terms of what the rest have done or intend to do.

She also has guts, if you'll pardon the expression, is working on reducing them and how many of us would come out of that photo opportunity looking great?!
