A MOB has burned to death at least 11 people accused of witchcraft in Kenya.
"Their houses were torched. Eight women and three men suspected of being witches died," said Charles Owino, Kenya's deputy police spokesman. Residents in the Kisii district in the west of the country said an enraged crowd had gone from house to house on Tuesday.

"They burned them alive in their homes," one said. Those killed were mainly aged between 70 and 90.

Police drafted extra personnel into the area to prevent revenge attacks in a region already reeling from tribal killings during Kenya's post-election crisis. Traditional African beliefs, Christianity and Islam co-exist peacefully in Kenya. But there is widespread suspicion of sorcery, particularly in west Kenya, which has a long tradition of witch doctors and faith healers.

One is forced to wonder which primitive belief system the mob followed. Christianity perhaps? It does have a rep for witch-burning after all!

Does it matter what religion these 70-90 year old people believed??
To kill ANYONE like this is shear cowardice!!!

IF the accused claim to be Christian; they're surely not!

I don't know the country at all. Is the region in which this happened particularly remote or isolated? Is it considered to be a backward part of the country?

>"They're only following a Christian tradition of burning witches"

No, they're following a tradition of killing people for various, ignorant reasons. Stoning them to death would be no better, nor sacrificing them to the sun or moon gods, or any other excuse for killing people that the crowd doesn't like.

Besides, when crowds run amok killing people it's called 'anarchy'.
