Published Date: 29 August 2008
REPUBLICAN presidential hopeful John McCain will name the youngest and first female governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, as his running mate today, US media reported.
In an election which will be about change, so-called "hockey mum" Ms Palin has a reputation for government reform and an approval rating higher than 80%.

The 44-year-old former runner-up of the 1984 Miss Alaska beauty pageant would be the second female vice-presidential nominee of a major party, following Geraldine Ferraro as Democratic nominee in 1984.
Senior campaign officials confirmed Mr McCain's decision to US media outlets, including CNN and Fox News.

Mr McCain, who will officially confirm his running mate at a rally in Ohio later today on his 72nd birthday, reportedly chose Ms Palin as his vice presidential nominee yesterday, but the decision has been shrouded in secrecy.

Speculation only moved to mother-of-five Ms Palin, who, like Mr McCain calls herself a maverick and was considered an outside bet, after airport officials confirmed a private plane flew from Alaska into Middletown Regional Airport in Butler County, near Cincinnati, Ohio, ahead of the official announcement in the state.

She is pro-life, a fiscal and social conservative and holds a lifetime membership with the National Rifle Association.

Ms Palin also hunts, eats moose burgers, ice fishes, rides snowmobiles, owns a float plane, according to US reports.

She rose to attention in Alaska after blowing the whistle on ethical violations by state Republican Party leaders and was elected in 2006 after beating the incumbent Republican governor in the primary and a former Democratic Alaskan governor in the general election.

Democratic nominee Barack Obama is making an aggressive play for the traditional Republican stronghold of Alaska and its three electoral votes, and polls show the race is close.

Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, former Pennsylvania governor Tom Ridge, and Democrat-turned-independent Joe Lieberman were among others thought to be considered for the job.

look at the picture of her on cover of Vogue magazine at this link.

She was a high-school basketball star where they called her Sarah Barracuda. She was a beauty queen, runner up in Miss Alaska contest. She got a degree in journalism. She worked as a sports broadcaster. she became a mayor of a town of 10,000 people. She became a state legislator. She accused others of corruption and became high-profile. She's been governor of Alaska for 1-1/2 years.

She's strongly pro-life and if she's McCain's running mate that means she's strongly pro-war as well.

The Democrats have the Magic Negro and the Republicans now have Wonder Woman.

McCain promised he'd select someone who could succeed him if he dies. He selected someone with no experience whatsoever in Washington. McCain turns 73 today.

Interesting choice. As mayor of Wasilla, Alaska and governor of the state for the past three years, she has already amassed more executive experience that Obama and Biden (career legislators) combined.I wonder how Sen. Clinton sees this development.

She still has more experience than Obama, who by the way made very rude comments. The man has NO class.

Byron in #2:

I think thats a great idea to stop illegal drugs in America. Here's a web-site of former DEA agent Cele Castillo.

http://www.powderburns.org/

He remembers back in the 1980's when he was in central America his job was to facilitate drug smuggling into the United States. He says that George HW Bush came to visit them and gave them a pep talk and as well acknowledged that they were purposely bringing drugs into the US.

If you think that the death rate due to US created wars is low, then perhaps you should consider that well over 1 million Iraqis have died due to the one we put in their country. We don't know how many Afghans have died due to that war, but we do know it includes 70, 80 or 90 civilians killed last week when the US got bad intelligence and bombed the wrong spot.

Our death toll among US military is also a lot higher than you think. As well there have been huge numbers of US soldiers wounded. I see them regularly without arms or legs. Many have brain damage from the explosions. Many have long-term emotional problems as a result of the war. You are insane to be pro-war.

Let me tell you something, Sarah Palin is similarly insane. She's a highly indoctrinated Republican who is completely out-of-touch with not only reality, but with any kind of decent morality at all.

This is a smart move by McCain who is up against with Obama's first-black-president tag making him look like he has done a deal with fate.

Hilary Clinton's supporters, many of whom haven't took to Obama, now have the choice of putting the first female vice-president in power instead. The fact she is relatively young and photogenic will really help McCain's campiagn too in this celebrity age.
6

Lynne,

Palm Beach Gardens 29/08/2008 18:07:23
Wally, you are debased and insane... the last two statements you make just goes to show you how low you are. She has more moral authority than you and your moronic conspiracy theories on every subject. What have you done to make life better for your Arizonians (if that is where you live). NOTHING. Just like a subhuman...you cricitize but you don't walk the walk. For once in your life Wally, Shut Up, and stop proving you are a moron.
7

Yankee girl,

I don't know anything about her politics. All I know is that I knew McCain would pick a woman running mate. It's creepy the way the old wrinkled dude surrounds himself with beautiful women.
8

Lynne,

#15.. there was a whole convention full of people ready to vote for Obama. So, you seem to be wrong on that.
Sandi, I once was a Dem...now I am Independent..IF the liberal media didn't hide all the fats about Obama he wouldn't be where he is today.
The only thing going for this guy is he made a speech in 2002 or 2004. That is it.
The video he presented to the peole at the convention was a a background he made up for himself.

I am hoping that the Supreme Court judges don't die or retire any time soon...but I am not voting for Obama..
And as far as Mrs. Palin is concerned.. more power to her. Conservative or not. The Dems wouldn't be where they are had they listened to Mrs. Clinton. Already his Change (whatever that is) has not happened with the appt of Biden as his VP and running mate.

Byron:

you're all mixed upon this drug issue. Let me straighten.

The government has an obligation both legal & moral to stop cocaine, heroin & other illegal drugs coming into the US. The reason is that the people should be protected from these things. The government is not only failing to do this, the government has developed a system where the big drug smugglers are working with the government and protected. I gave you a link in #7. You should also read the book 'Dark Alliance' to document this. Then there are the books concerning the smuggling into Arkansas that Governor Clinton helped facilitate (along with George HW Bush). One book on that was from the English author Ambrose Evans Pritchard.

http://www.narconews.com/darkalliance/drugs/start.htm

http://www.mega.nu:8080/ampp/webb.html

However, it is immoral to throw citizens in jail merely for possession or use of small quantities. THe only legitimate role of government in this field is to protect the citizens from the drugs. When government fails to protect them and the people use drugs, then the government is doing more harm to them by giving them jail time and felony records than the drugs do. This is abusive to the citizens who should be respected even if they are drug users.

The hard-cold facts are that over a period of decades republican leaders and democrat leaders alike have facilitated the drug trade into the US. and then they've thrown in jail huge numbers of citizens who are actually victims of this moral cess-pool the government has facilitated.

Three years ago she was mayor of a town with 10,000 people in it. But before that she was city councilman. before that she was sports broadcaster. But she's been governor for 1-1/2 years. John McCain is 73.

And when she was governor she orchestrated the firing of her brother-in-law who had been a state policeman. The original article won't load because all over the world people are trying to load it. Here is a copy.

Just noticed on MSN.com an article in which it says, "Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton warned that McCain had "put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency.""

Puts it in perspective for me.

#74 Wally It would seem that we might be getting two for the price of one VP if her husband is so involved in her Administration.
This was exactly my concern if Obama had chosen Hillary as his VP. I couldn't quite see Bill taking a back seat to Hillary as VP.
#72 More than likely. Under no circumstance could I bring myself to vote for McCain and voting for Nader or Barr would be a waste of my vote - so it's more than likely I'd vote for Obama/Biden. I don't think we need another 8 years of Republican rule.

here's a video clip from YouTube showing a local news story up in Alaska. At 45 seconds in they start talking about one of the Palin scandals. Its very damaging to her.

The state legislature is going to come out with a report in October on how she had her brother-in-law fired.

What impresses me about her is that she mindlessly accepts the september 11 ideology and she's very pro-war. she came from a small town directly into the governor's house less than 2 years ago and she behaves like it. She's extremely partisan in her politics and simple-minded.

California is well-represented on the Democratic federal level with two powerful Democratic senators (Boxer and Feinstein), Democrat Nancy Pelosi is Speaker of the House, so far the highest ranking elected woman in US history. The fact that the Governor is Republican only makes things interesting.
