AN ABANDONED suitcase triggered a major security alert at Scotland's busiest airport yesterday and threw the travel plans of thousands of passengers into chaos.
The bag, later found to be empty, was discovered in a public toilet at Edinburgh Airport's main terminal, sparking a full-scale evacuation of the building and lengthy delays.

A police inquiry was under way last night to try to trace the owner of the large case, which was discovered in the ladies' toilets of the domestic arrivals area by a member of staff at a Costa Coffee bar at about 2:20pm. It was destroyed by military bomb disposal experts.

Officials at the airport – which was expecting to handle about 35,000 passengers yesterday – said the find came at the "worst possible time", because it coincided with the first day of the school holidays in the city.

Three incoming flights from London were cancelled and about 150 others were delayed for up to three hours, while the army's bomb squad carried out its investigation, before giving the all-clear at about 5pm.

Passengers were told to leave the arrivals hall, main check-in area at the terminal building, the food courts and shops, and gather at safety areas outside.

The scare led to major traffic disruption around the airport, with tailbacks stretching back about a mile. Some passengers faced lengthy walks to the airport after being dropped off by shuttle bus from the city centre.

A spokesman for airport operator BAA said there were "significant knock-on delays for passengers".

He added: "This kind of incident is pretty unusual, but has happened before.

"There is a security concern over any unattended luggage and we have established procedures that are put in place when a bag cannot be accounted for.

"However, it was the worst possible day, because the school holidays have just started and the airport was very busy."

As the area is open to the public, the bag would not necessarily have been checked in.

One insider said: "It's a bit of a mystery as to how this bag got there. It's pretty normal for luggage to be left abandoned, but not an empty bag. Obviously, it's a bit strange and that's why there are efforts ongoing to track down the owner."

A police spokeswoman said:

"As a result of this discovery, the terminal building was evacuated, and the army EOD (explosive ordnance disposal] team were called to attend. They examined the luggage, and found that it posed no threat.

"Inquires are under way to establish how the luggage came to be located within the toilets."

Earlier, Edinburgh police were forced to evacuate all staff from their headquarters at Fettes Avenue to a nearby high school after mailroom staff raised the alarm over a suspect package.

Police last night said there was nothing to connect the two incidents. More than 350 police staff faced a three-hour wait to return to the building while the bomb squad inspected the package, later described as a hoax by senior officers.

"a full-scale evacuation of the building and lengthy delays."

Really! This is just the usual paranoia associated with air travel. All that for an empty bag. We really need to get a grip.

Again, why all the security at airports when we don;t have this for trains, ferries or buses. Air travel security is just a great big joke.

We were on one of the last flights to land; they put us back on the plane from passport control, at the other end of the airport from the case. Surrounded by thousands of litres of fuel. There were BP lorries driving everywhere throughout this so called security incident, and plenty of things even I as a non security expert will point out to them. Afterwards, chaos; bags lost, huge queues etc. 6 years since we flew for a family holiday; can't see us doing it for another 6.

#1,

And how were they supposed to know it was an empty bag?

I'm sure if this happened in the toilets at Waverley the same evacuation would have taken place.

Although I do agree. Maybe they should have just evacuated part of the airport. Even if it was a bomb it wouldn't have put the whole terminal at risk.

BIN LADEN and GW BUSH's over reaction to his terrorism have surely turned the world on it's head!

Every damn thing is now Terrorism! Criticize the Government and you ARE AUTOMATICALLY A TERRORIST!!!

Across here in Canada anybody who criticizes the COST OVER RUNS of the Winter Olympics is regarded as a potential terrorist. (and will be detained and interogated) We now have 'security' on our ferries, although it has never been explained why a TERRORIST would waste his time and efforts on such a mundane tatget!!

So we have dodgy talking shops, political smearing, attack blogs and some controlled by officers from LBP posing as BNP supporters?

Is this the 1970's? again and dodgy police operations interfering with the democratic will of the people?

Looking like it.

How is this allowed to happen? We preach democracy and acceptance of the peoples choices on one hand whilst talking about the Iran Elections. But we deny our own people a voice or go out of our way to subvert it by smearing opponents, bloggers or closing down news threads.

Welcome to digital age new Labour style.

I have vast experience in forensic and detective work (and several awards)

Clearly the bag was not empty when it was brought into the airport.

So what was in the bag that was so important that the bag had to be left behind in the Ladies and the contents transferred to another container?

Once that has been determined, the case will be solved.

#1. No doubt if a bomb exploded at the airport killing people you would have been the first on the complain that nothing was done to prevent it.

For those making light of the situation, just a reminder, it is the anniversary today of the London bombings. I wonder if you comedians would be so quick to make jokes in the faces of bereaved families?

Regardless of whether we like the rules or not we all know that unattended luggage ( empty or full) causes alarm and all bags shouldn't be left unattended (tube, rail or airport). Its easy to have a pop at the authorities as air travel is the least pleasant way to travel these days but what about the person who left it there because they couldn't be bothered to take it home and the utter chaos they inflicted on the rest of the travelling public doesn't that merit a few comments? A trully selfish act on their part.

If it was a real attack put a car bomb near the muster points, use a fake to get everyone outside & hey presto, alternate option hijack the #35 & fill with fertilzer !

Why do so many poster here treat what happened at Edinburgh Airport with such levity and what has it got to do with polititians.
The huge amount of money spent on security is not for nothing and if people's lives are saved by a bit of inconvenience that is good.
If some of you people were around when the bombs do go off you wouldn't be smart.
37

Dragonlord,

Strange but no-one has pointed out the obvious. Bag placed in airport, causes security alert allowing the police and government to say, see we were right. Paranoia is getting out of hand and the people need to see that by keeping people afraid the government can do what they like under a banner of security.

I would like to commend the traffic warden who, on giving me a parking ticket for leaving my car for three minutes to help my 85-year-old aunt with her luggage, impressed on me that leaving my car unattended, especially after the incident earlier in the day, could be seen as a danger to national security. Well done sir. Your profession has won yet another popularity contest.

Don't you believe it. This politics of fear is making some people millions. Just check how many politicians are on the boards of arms manufacturers, security consultancies etc.
In the 50's it was communism, 60's and 70's nuclear armeggedon, 80's acid rain, 90's greenhouse gases and now in the 00's we have terrorism

43,

The obvious point to make would be that a bomb can go off in a lot less than 3 minutes after leaving a car. That said, I'm no lover of these wardens whether they are working at the airport or in the city. There is definitely a zero tolerance with these guys. I understand your frustration but I wouldn't have risked it without at least trying to get their permission first. Alternatively, it's the short term car park which costs about 3 quid? for less then 30 minutes and is almmost as accessible to the terminal. Hindsight eh!

If the bag was empty as reported, then maybe the whole thing becomes a little more sinister.. maybe it was a dry trial run for something far more nasty in the future. I dont know about the rest of you but I have never taken an empty suitcase to an airport in my life.... infact I wouldnt lug an empty suitcase anywhere unless it was home having just bought it!!!

I was attacked by airport crew for flying around the world without baggage. This was really sinister and worrying--what will we search when there is no bag?
Perhaps they thought I had left an empty bag somewhere?? I do not see the point of bringing everything but the kitchen sink and having a heart attack trying to carry it. You just need a change of under pants in case the aircraft crashes.

Gordon Brown was visiting a primary school and he looked in on one of the classes. They were in the middle of a discussion regarding words and their meanings.

The teacher asked Mr Brown if he would like to lead the discussion on the word 'tragedy' so the illustrious leader asked the class for an example of a 'tragedy'.

A little boy stood up and offered, 'If my best friend, who lives on a farm, is playing in the field and a tractor runs over him and kills him, that would be a tragedy.'

'No', said Gordon, 'that would be an accident.'

A little girl raised her hand, 'If a school bus carrying fifty children drove over a cliff, killing everyone inside, that would be a tragedy.'

'I'm afraid not', explained Gordon, 'that's what we would call a great loss.'

The room went silent. No other children volunteered. Gordon searched the room, 'Isn't there anyone here who can give me an example of a tragedy?'

Finally, at the back of the room, little Johnny raised his hand....

In a quiet voice he said, 'If a plane carrying you and Mr Darling was hit by a 'friendly fire' missile and blown to smithereens, that would be a tragedy..'

'Fantastic!' exclaimed Gordon, 'That's right. And can you tell me why that would be a tragedy?'

'Well,' says little Johnny, 'it has to be a tragedy, because it certainly wouldn't be a great loss and it probably wouldn't be an accident either!'

How does this sound for an explanation. Someone stole the suitcase from the luggage carousel, took it into the toilet, transferred the contents to another holdall, left the suitcase & then left the airport with their booty.

What concerns me is Why an empty bag? Sure someone may have stolen the contents and placed into a different bag BUT what concerns me the most what if there had been some other thing in the bag, a good disguise to enter with a suspicious item! I think the Airport security concerns were correct and their response even more correct .Better safe than sorry! We ALL need to be more alert about our surroundings and no matter how daft we think something is -repoert it.Good job for the airport, hope they track down the suspect!
