Petrol below £1 a litre returned today when supermarket Asda dropped the price of unleaded to 99.9p.
The cut means a 5p a litre reduction in the price of petrol at Asda pumps, with a litre of diesel falling from 116.9p to 110.9p.

This is the first time since last December that petrol has been under £1 in the UK, with unleaded going over 120p a litre and diesel over 130p during the worst of this year's price rises.

"This is a welcome boost for consumers at a time of economic gloom and high inflation," said Asda spokeswoman Jennifer England.

She went on: "Unlike some of our competitors, our price is constant throughout the country and does not vary from area to area. This reduction will come as a relief to road users."

The price of oil on world markets has fallen from a high of around 147 US dollars a barrel earlier this year to as low, last week, as less than 80 dollars.

Last week Prime Minister Gordon Brown said he wanted this price cut to be passed on to consumers "as quickly as possible".

Great! This will make driving repeatedly up and down Gorgie Road much more affordable.

Well, Jenny?

OK good. Now when the price of oil was rising we were told that gas and electricity were linked to the cost of oil and had to rise too. So lets see what happens. But don't hold yer breath.

But it was around 80 pence not much more than a year ago. You can fool some of the people...etc..

So with oil prices tanking, when do we expect that the price of electricity will come down. I received notification today that my bills would be increased by around 20% starting in late August, 2008.

#5. How did you receive notification today of an increase due 6 weeks ago? It's all a big con anyway. When you add up everything that has soared in price, true inflation is well into double figures.

Let's hear it for Maggie Broon and her diehard Liebours!! Remember this come polling day.

A drop in the price of 5p to 99.9p. is good news. But why was Asda still selling at 104.9p while others had already gone down to 102.9p?

A bit off topic but -

In my locality there used to be 5 filling stations, then Tesco came, now there is one - Tesco. They broke no laws, but the playing field was not level. It was like the mighty Man Utd playing Arbroath.

Shortly after the demise of the last small filling station Tesco's prices started to climb.

I don't fill up their any more - I've found a small filling station that's 10 miles away on the way to work - it's open 24 hours a day and is currently cheaper than Tesco - the profit goes into the pocket of a local man.

I urge everyone to do the same. Bring back competition and diversity.
