Oh, Now... hang on... We finally have a candidate that I don't have to apologize for when I come to visit. More folks are voting today than any other time in the history of this democracy. 30% of the population voted early or absentee, which is greater than total voters in several of the last elections (disgusting as that is...). Where we vote, my husband said that for the first time, c. 25 - 30% of the people standing in line to vote were Black - finally we have a representative voting public, at least here. I'm afraid that even the pollstes were suprised at the turnout. But remember the turn out surprise is a Good Thing. I am So Tired of apolgizing for my president everywhere I go.
I'm ready to pull an all-nighter; I've got my 1967 McKillops on hand, and I pray I get to have a good, long, dram, (or four) in celebration. Keep the faith.

Well, I'm glad that Carlyn Keith #3 won't have to apologize for Obama, but my friends and associates are progressive - and they read. Don't have to apologize for outrageous war-funding, telecom and government immunity for spying, the Wall Street giveaway? Stating that he would be willing to send forces into Pakistan - even without Pakistan's permission - if they were chasing al Qaeda? My time for the news has been a bit limited: did he make any statement at all about the bombing of Syria?

For some reason, Europe seems besotted with the phony liberal. (I'll never let another European get away with lecturing anyone on the political ignorance of Americans.)

It's going to take a lot of work and a lot of pressure to pull this militaristic corporatist to the left of Richard Nixon.

Rob Bennett,

The less bad candidate won.

The real question is, Did we elect enough progressives to Congress? A large enough majority can force a president to do what he might otherwise resist doing. Why do you think Congress' approval ratings are lower than Bush's?

By the way, don't you mean Sandy rather than Sandi?

#3 I'm with you. I wish I still drank. Single malt neat with branch on the side.
#17 I do think your grapes are sour. Indeed and your lips are a pout.
I think we (Americans) have a man that will steer a straight course. Will include us (the struggling former middle class) in his decision making process and for the first time in forty years of voting I am pleased with the outcome. I'm so tired of the politics of fear, of having to always be voting against whatever was going on.Barrack Obama was not my first choice or my second but he is my last and best choice for change. For those interested in statistics: I'm white , 62 years old, a veteran of Vietnam and a gun owner with a license to carry a concealed weapon and I am registered as a democrat.

"The young & dumb decided this election."

Actually if you look at the demographic statistics the higher a person's educational level, the more likely they were to vote for Obama.

The young did vote for Obama in vast numbers, but the 'dumb' voted for McCain and his even more dumb running mate.

"That's funny I thought I lived in Scotland.
Who gives a donald duck about the USA."

It is insular, parochial Scots like you who give the rest of us a bad name - perhaps you should try to actually learn something about other countries and cultures.

"Did you see the black people who have never voted all queuing to vote for a black president, makes you sick."

Yes I'm sure it does make you sick - you no doubt think blacks shouldn't even be allowed to vote. The rest of us think that it is a good thing they have been energised to enter the electoral process.

This election was decided my both young and old, black and white and many others. The well informed and the not so well informed.

Personally I am a very mature white independent voter who has supported Obama since the primaries as a real alternative to the painful path the Bush Administration has placed us on.

And my second love is Scotland, a truly beautiful country and a great people.

Well, the sun came out the same as any other day. The leaves continue to fall from the trees, and want collecting. In other words, nothing magical has happened, just a logical progression of evolution.Don't misunderstand me,Obama was my man,but he's got a huge job before him,and if he can do 1/2 of what he promised,he's done very well.

Scottish person #25 : You are wrong, Scots cousin. Here in Kentucky we have descendents of Scots living in our highlands. I've been to Paisley about three times, visiting a lovely person on Mile End lane to buy antiques. I'm horrifed that some Muslim doctors living near Paisley wanted to attack the Brits.

Now we worry that we will have a Muslim in our White House!

I agree with #3 Carlyn Keith from New York.
" We finally have a candidate that I don't have to apologize for when I come to visit."
The demographics of the voting public have changed. We have more Hispanic voters who got out and voted. The Cubans who left Cuba because of Castro were staunch Republicans but their children are not so Obama picked up Florida. Also the fact that young people saw a cause and got into the process helped. Among college graduates Obama won out. White men gave McCain a lead but white women not so. Evangelicals and Southerners voted generally for Mc Cain.
The Dems did well in the House of Representatives and Senate but still didnt get enough of a majority in the Senate to stop fillibustering in future legislation.
As has been mentioned it's the House and Senate along with the President that decide how Obama's plans can be implemented.
A huge task ahead.
His acceptance speech rivaled John Kennedy's in fact I believe it was the most 'inclusive' speech I have ever heard.
I'm 81 years old and have lived in the US for 58 years. Prior to that I was raised in Yorkshire - where I visit quite regularly. I had great hopes for this outcome of the election and was ready to get out of the US if McCain had made it.

Dear #3 and #43 - We do not live in a democracy. Our founding fathers were a bit brighter tha to allow that to happen. We live in a representative republic. Look it up. Read a book. President elect Obama's victory merely indicates that the political establishment is firmly entrenched in D.C. Watch and you will come to realize there is no difference between Democrats and Republicans.
41

Alec in Chicago,

Chicago 06/11/2008 09:11:51
# 32 How dumb a comment can one make? The economy is in a tailspin because of policies that are a lot older than two years. The Dems bear the main responsibility for not telling Bush and Paulson to shove their bail-out (Wall Street giveaway). This has been many years in the making, andboth parties contributed to it, though it was the neocons (like Phil Gramm) that took the lead.

# 41 Kentucky Bloke: You've spent far too much time listening to the neocon smear machine. Obama is a Christian - the most dangerous group in the US, infiltrating government at every level.

# 44 Bill S. There's a little difference between the parties. The religious loonies took over the Republican party, but Eisenhower's dreaded military-industrial complex does own both parties outright.

RAV,

We Canadians felt it would be rude to totally disappoint all of the candidates in the recent general election (and dangerous to give the Conservatives a majority for 4 years) so we returned another minority gov't (the 3rd in succession) with the incumbent Conservative Party returned with a slightly larger minority than they had enjoyed for the past 2 years, during which time Parliament worked fairly well as all feared forcing an election so they worked together for a change. Quite frankly we were barely interested in the election called by the PM in hopes that the threatening economic storm would encourage us to give him a majority . Instead we stayed away from the polls in droves resulting in an historic low % of eligible voters casting their ballots - like pearls before swine. We need a proportional system in Canada! The New Democrats (social democrats) got less than 1/2 the seats a proportional system would have given them, fringe parties (Greens) got 0 seats but would have received 6 or 8, the Liberals would have received a few more seats esp in the predominatly Conservative West where less than a handful were elected with this "1st past the post " system. HUMBUG! PS 15% of Canadians polled wanted to vote in the USA election!
