Since climate change is ecologically linked to carbon dioxide emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels, it is obvious that this problem would only be exacerbated by the further combustion of biofuels.
There is some justification, in the short term, for the incineration of domestic refuse and wastes incidentally produced in the forestry industry, but the deliberate growing of crops to produce carbon-containing biofuels as an industrial process makes no environmental sense at all.

Against this background, perhaps we should be grateful, like Alan Black (Letters, 1 December), that the Scottish Government will not now be subsidising any project which would increase the combustion of carbon-containing fuels as an energy source.

The letter gets off to an excellent start by being completely wrong on this point.

Perhaps Neil could blast out a nice Scottish Operatic tune to herald a new 21st century modern and sophisticated Scotland?

Aye, right. Get the haggis up you!

Sorry, wrong letter.

My bad.

#3 Actually, Donnie, I don't think it made much difference. Dr Purves usually writes intelligent letters: this one is total gibberish. He starts off, as Plodjfriss points out, on the wrong (indeed incoherent) premiss and goes downhill from there.

The Slioch prize for scientific education will go to anyone who can tell us what "climate change is ecologically linked to carbon dioxide emissions" means.

WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.....
If the biofuels just release the CO2 they fixed during groath then they are carbon-neutral soemthing that fossil fuels can not be !
The main problem is that growing most biofuels uses more energy and therefore gnerates more carbon dioxide than is recoverd in energy...therefore they are not green...using wastes from forestry or developing good new techniques for fermenting food and garden wastes could be green....

I wish the Scottish Government did subsidise carbon containing fuels -
I could do with help in paying my for my food.
