I have never suffered from "cultural cringe", nor have I ever suffered from what Pete Wishart MP calls "an insecurity about our national culture, and heritage", nor am I in the business of "beating myself up about national identity" (Letters, 2 December).

However, as a proud son of Scotia, a country which, indeed, has "high international recognition and a massive international footprint", watching the advert for Homecoming 2009 made the cringe factor come over me big time. If Hamish Macdonell (Debate & Opinion, 2 December) believes it to be a "fabulous little commercial", I can only assume he has a taste for tartan tack, for it doesn't come much tackier than this little number.

NEIL McKINNON

Tulchan Garden

Perth

Donnie Murdo,

Perhaps Neil could blast out a nice Scottish Operatic tune to herald a new 21st century modern and sophisticated Scotland?

Aye, right. Get the haggis up you!

#2 May I suggest you do a little more research into my family roots and background before you come out with such nonsense?

Slainte Mhath!

Cringeworthy indeed. And shame on the SFA for re-naming the Scottish Cup competition. The oldest in the book - why change it just for this?

The advert is "OK" especially as it is aimed at the ex-pats and synthetic scots abroad but why show it all in Scotland!!!
They could use the money saved to bulk up their internet and email marketing activities abroad!!!!!
Typical Visit Scotland "thinking" - so outside the box that there is no box.......no sense, nonsense

#4...it is only for one year...next year it will go back to be known as the consolation cup.....

...........the ad may not be on global release yet , but thanks to the internet,it has been sent it to many expats in Hong Kong,Australia,Canada etc etc.................and they are either laughing their tartan socks off, or involving themselves in sticking their fingers down the throat and vomiting down their shirt fronts. So I think that should tell #5 Gdgy something, It is far from 'OK'!

I think that the advert does what they wanted to do...inform people in a memorable way....your comments do not "tell me something", they are your opinion of what some people may think of the ad....an opinion about the unknown....

#5 - and that would be consolation for......what exactly?

Sorry to advise..........but I think you may find that Visit Scotland have gone for cover not because of cost, but because they too are CRINGING behind their desks..............and also for the record..... by the second more and more e mails are pouring in from across the globe........and hardly a one is complimentary.

'Memorable' it most certainly is.........but for all the wrong reasons.

#8 - Sorry for trying to inject some humour!
Consolation for not winning the league....for the OF, if the manager does not win the league then the minimum required for them to keep their job is the Scottish Cup...
For anyone else, winning the Scottish cup is glorious nevermind consolation

Re earlier #2 Donnie Murdo. Respects if you are the Mod winner. I've even got a few of your renditions. Very beautiful. As I see it,singing in whatever tradition, if it is of quality, is where it should always be at,and should be respected.

Got to be a damn sight better than what we have to cringe at on Homecoming 2009.

For the record, I have never forgotten, nor lost my traditional roots,. ........but I have little time for tartan maudlin sentimental tack.
With the talent that is available, Scotland and the World, deserves better than this offering.
