The real market for "old masters" is skewed by publicly funded museums across the globe competing with taxpayers' money to buy these pictures. There are more than enough old paintings in Scotland's galleries so if a rich individual wishes to purchase these great paintings then let them and replace the paintings with copies.
The Duke of Sutherland has benefited from free insurance and expert curatorial care for many years – let him or his heirs repay that with a hefty inheritance tax bill. £100 million could go towards real benefits such as traffic-free paths, healthy-eating initiatives or insulating our homes – much more valuable than two old paintings which require a classical education to appreciate fully.
