Brown's crusade

George Foulkes (Debate & Opinion, 28 August) says Gordon Brown is on "a crusade to end poverty". Given his thirst for higher taxes, his reckless overspending, his continual burdening of the economy with regulation and his belief in state omnipotence, it is clear he has been on a crusade to end prosperity, and a successful one at that.

How could you possibly say that prosperity is lower and that poverty is greater than it was 10 years ago?

Try telling that to the 3 million people who were unemployed under Thatcher.

Try telling that to the millions on the minimum wage.

Try telling that to the single mothers for whom child benefit is the only money they get.

This government is not perfect, but nobody, not even Foulkes, is saying that it is. But it is a country of more opportunity and less poverty than it has ever been, and we should be thankful to the people who believed that Britain could have it better, because thanks to them we have.

Under G Brown gap between rich and poor has widened.

His doubling of the 10p tax rate band to 20p has hurt the lowest paid including working students and pensioners.

Meanwhile Non Dom Millionaires are given generous tax breaks.

#1 Brown has done nothing but put taxes up and expand the currency for years. That is why prices are rocketing.

A minimum wage does not increase prosperity, check your economics.

Wrong. Brown's constant tax rises and the soaring prices are biting and this has been coming for years because he thought the good times would always be here. The tax rises have been cumulative and it is well documented that the poor pay a higher proportion of their income in tax than the rich.

If you check your economic history properly, I think you will find that the UK, including Scotland, was more prosperous, even if more unequal, as a consequence of Thatcherism.
