The news that the government is now prepared to be substantially more generous to those members of the armed forces who are injured in the course of duty (your report, 18 July) is indeed excellent although well after the date when it should have happened.
However, there is no mention of any members already on the long-term injured list now having to reside in one of the, no doubt excellent, homes and hospitals which have continually to seek charity donations to allow them to continue their good work. It has always been a scandal that this sort of care has not been provided as a matter of right and one would hope that, now that a move has been made, proper support for these fine institutions will also be provided.

The Defence Secretary, Des Browne, has still some way to go before getting a proper warm glow from thoughts of having made proper provision for our noble defenders

Politicians in the UK are savvy and know appeasing the ethnic minorities(I understand the OXford Dictionary is revising its definition of minority when used in this context) where there are more votes (especially postal ones) to be had than from members of the armed forces.

They do not consider that one fights for the country and the other fights the country or fights those who fight for the country
