It is not clear what caused Richard Welsh (Letters, 3 September) to launch his scatter-gun tirade against cyclists.
To enable him to take a more balanced view, perhaps Mr Welsh (and anyone else of a like mind where cyclists are concerned) would write to the local MSP or chief constable to ask how many motorists have been prosecuted for offences against cyclists, for example, turning left across them, opening a vehicle door, pulling out of a side road into the path of a cyclist, and so on.

In particular, will Mr Welsh ask how many drivers have been prosecuted for parking in a cycle lane clearly marked on the road? This forces cyclists to pull out into traffic or to come to a standstill until a gap occurs in a line of moving vehicles, precisely the circumstances which cycle lanes are intended to obviate.

I understand that the police have taken a view that motorists parking in cycle lanes should not be prosecuted. Many cyclists would be interested to know if this is the case.

Alan raises many interesting points - the issue of cars parking in cycle lanes is an obvious nonsense. Why should the authorities agree to defend cyclists' rights to freedom from wayward drivers by creating traffic-free cycle lanes - only to have other drivers force ctclists back into the maelstrom that is many urban streets?

The police need to start prosecuting car drivers who wilfully place the safety of syclists at risk.

It's very difficult for a cyclist to pass a car parked illegaly without causing a deep gouge all along the side of the vehicle with pedals, handlebars etc. If it's done properly.

And another thing: what about the complete TO55ERs (there's a vanity plate for you) who park on the pavement? Nothing seems to get done about them. Anyone in a wheelchair or pushing a buggy or pram has to go on to a busy road. The police should accept mobile phone photographs of the offending vehicles and prosecute.

I am reminded of a delightful story of someone who parked in the disabled bay at a sports centre and got out of the car, obvioulsy able bodied. He/she was asked by a body builder if they were disabled. On replying "No", said bodybuilder asked if they would like to be.

Better stop now in case I injure myself when I fall off my horse. Man, it's high.
