Farewell to an icon

The nostalgic farewell of the QE II (your report, 6 October) brings back memories of the great days of shipbuilding in Scotland. Generations worked on the ships, and these jobs kept thriving communities going and families fed. The lack of investment, poor government support, EEC regulations, unrealistic pay demands and restrictive practices all contributed to shipbuilding's demise. Now the last great icon will disappear and be consigned to an undeserved end as an hotel in Dubai.
