Generation gap

Nick Green ("One step forward, one
step back in the race for renewables
deadline", 5 September) is mistaken
about the amount of electricity generated
in Scotland from "renewables"
(2006 data). He makes it 15 per cent by
adding 10 per cent from hydropower to
5 per cent from other renewables.
However, he has added the amount from natural flow hydro (7.9 per cent)
to that from pumped storage (2.2 per cent). As the government website
makes clear, "Pumped storage is not a renewable source of energy because it uses electricity produced by other means to create a store of hydrological power".
Consequently, the amount generated from renewables overall in
2006 was only 13 per cent.
His reference to the commissioning of the Glen Doe hydro project is also mistaken. The plant has not yet been commissioned.
