Reading through Iain Gray's article (Debate & Opinion, 28 August ), I was astounded that there was not one policy idea in it. While we might expect general mud-slinging and ad hominem arguments from anti-SNP letter writers, surely a contender for the leadership of Scottish Labour should be using the space accorded to him in a more positive way. Of course, maybe he has no policy ideas.

A fair point about the lack of substance, but, as regards the mudslinging and ad hominem arguements, Mr Elder presumably didn't see the poisonous and juvenile responses to Iain Gray's article on these discussion forums.

If labour could get over their fixation on Alex Salmond and gutter politics and actually let us know what their policies are to deal with the current financial situation are, then they might have a chance. Otherwise they can give us a goodbye wave as they set off on the train to oblivion..... Sad for such a historically great Party but it looks as if Orwell got it right in Animal Farm! Personally I cant tell the Pigs from the Farmers any more, Sorry New Labour from the Conservatives!

Like the recent contest for the leadership of the Scots Lib-Dems, the vast majority of Scots have little interest in the internal Labour Party election, and would be hard pushed to name any of the lacklustre candidates.

Far less likable is the slimy Mr Darling. I saw him earlier today on the TV back-peddling over this piece in the Guardian.
