Although Edinburgh University's academic standards were recently criticised on TV because a graduate appearing on the show The Apprentice did not know what a kosher chicken was (your report, 9 May), it is not the only top university to be embarrassed by a former student.
I recall a St Andrews University graduate, asked on a TV game show: "Which word links a kind of mammal with an archbishop?" Answer: "Marsupial."

Perhaps both institutions need to add a little religion to the curriculum.

I would surprised that many outside of the Jewish faith would know what "kosher" meant, similarly "halal" for Muslims.

I remember the Archbishop of Canterbury once commenting that "Primate research is wrong." Clearly a conflict of interests.

On BBC TV last night numerous Aberdeen University students could not say what happened in 1314 and probably don't know about 1320 either.
