LIT versus status quo
Published Date:
21 July 2008
Your three-pronged attack (18 July) on the SNP's local income tax proposals has finally convinced me that all the experts in favour of the status quo have been right along.
It is entirely fair that a high-income family should pay the same for council services as the pensioners next door. It is the duty of trade unions, eg Unison, to use their members' subscriptions to bankroll a political party which opposes LIT, even though many of these members are low paid and would benefit. Businesses should not have the hassle of processing LIT on their payroll, even though implementing the 10p tax change was no trouble at all, and the hordes of would-be immigrants now massing south of Hadrian's Wall can march over the Border without the fear of descending into penury.
In the meantime, I will take Peter Jones (Debate & Opinion, 18 July) at his word in that what I pay in council tax is a decision made by myself, and will pop into my local council office to inform them I am not paying it anymore.
