THE International Olympic Committee is out of date with regard to its criticism of Usain Bolt's style of celebration after his magnificent 100 and 200 metre Olympic golds. It was obvious for all to see that the spectators in the stadium loved every minute of it and I can't imagine that Bolt's fellow athletes were objecting to his behaviour.
Sport at international level is big entertainment now, and so long as referees, umpires and the rules of the sport are given the proper respect there is nothing wrong with a bit of showboating whilst enjoying a gold medal win.

Broxburn boy, Linlithgow lad

YOUR reports continue with the mistake that Gavin Hamilton is a Broxburn man. If anything he is a Linlithgow man. He was born in the Bangour maternity unit, hence his birth had to be recorded at the Broxburn registry office (perhaps this is the source of the repetitive error).

He was back home in Linlithgow, where his parents still stay, within a couple of days. I am sure if you speak to Gavin he will confirm this fact.

Gordon predates coronation

RICHARD Moore in his otherwise most readable story about Elenor Gordon leads us astray by suggesting, in his opening paragraph, that Elenor had been carrying the baton of Scottish swimming "since a matter of weeks after the Queen's Coronation". However, the Helsinki Olympics, to which he was referring, took place in 1952, and the Queen's Coronation was not until the following year, on 2 June, 1953.

Is Richard possibly referring to the Queen's Accession, which took place immediately upon the death of her father, on 6 February, 1952? The Helsinki Olympics, and Elenor's success, did indeed follow a short time after that.

An Open and shut case
THERE is no golf event called "the British Open". It is a shame that many people in the world are ignorant of the history and name of the world's oldest Open Championship.

The BBC and The Scotsman really should know better.

Mr. Bruce in Portree has slightly missed the point. The IOC did not and does not berate any athlete, including Usain Bolt, for celebrating and "grandstanding" their success. However, the IOC did criticise that Usain Bolt did not show sportsmanship by shaking hands with his competitors either to accept their congratulations or to give his own for their achievements.

Richard Frymann is correct. There is no such thing as the British Open. Neither is there an Englsh FA. And the international team that plays in orange strips are the Netherlands, not Holland.
Can we please get these right.

There is an event called the British Open - there you go - I've just called it "the British Open" if enough people do the same then it will become the British Open through usuage....and if it annoys some pedants - great!
